I've had a sore throat for a week now give or take. At first I just thought I was coming down with a cold and thought nothing of it. - think it was both sides of the throat. It got a little better but now it's extremly sore and it hurts to swallow and only on my right side. Mind you I detest doctors and if its just a sore throat I'm more than willing to ride this out. Has anyone experienced anything similiar. Did a quick search and I'm getting scared that it may be tonsilitis, but am I not too old for that? I've had severe sore throats before. I am sneezing and sniffling some and getting some flem buildup so don't really know what to make of it. Left work today with a slight headache also. Could it just be a cold and I'm just over dramatic? |

Could it be an allergy? |

I've had a lot of experience with tonsilitis, so no you aren't too old for it. Really, I think your safest bet is to go see a Dr. However, til then there are a few ways you can tell. Feel your lymph nodes, right under your jaw bone on either side of your neck--- do they feel swollen or tender? Also, does the soreness go away when you drink some apple juice or hot tea, or is it always there? Apples have something in them that helps scratchy or sore throats, so if it's just a sore throat irritated by a cold, eating an apple or drinking some apple juice will almost certainly help it. However, if the irritation or inflammation is caused by an infection such as tonsilitis, the only way you can get pain relief is with advil or something. Hope this helps--- if you don't feel better in a few days, please go see a Dr. Keep us updated! |

I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling crummy. I get Strep Throat at the drop of a hat, so that's the first thing I though of, but not sure if that's what you've got. The telltale signs for me are if I see white dots on the back of my throat (looking in the mirror using a flashlight), and I also get an odd "unnatural" taste in my mouth that always seems to accompany strep. My sore throat pains also usually only seem to happen on the right side, as well.
Again, not sure that's what you've got, but perhaps take a peek and see if you see spots?
Good luck!!! Hope you feel better very soon. |

I do have allergies but they're not that severe. My bf has allergies and he says that throat gets scratchy/itchy. Mine feel inflammed. I tried to look w a flashlight down my throat and it doesn't look red or anything, all I know is that it is sore. |

Strep actually crossed my mind. The soreness is there even when I drink/eat although I haven't tried apple juice. Even when I have a bad cold eith cold sores apples never really made my throat better.
As far as strep is concerned, white spots? Are they that visible? Yea lypmh nodes are a tad swollen, they've been worse during bad colds though.
When u had tonsilitis did you have them removed or did they go away? |

All of the times I had tonsilitis it never went away on its own--- I always ended up taking antibiotics. I haven't had my tonsils out yet, thank goodness, but considering how often the darn things get infected, I may end up having to do it one day... |

It definitely sounds like strep, I hope you get well soon! I highly recommend taking a megadose of garlic suppliments in place of an antibiotic. I take the aged garlic type by kyolic, most nutrition stores carry them. Because they are aged they won't make you smell like garlic (and have increased antioxidant protection as well, so they're good for skin too). |

I've never heard of the garlic supplements...I'll definitely have to give that a try next time!
I get strep a lot (4x last year) and most of the time I can see spots on my throat. My BF, however, doesn't develop visible spots when he has strep, so perhaps it's a personal thing.
If it doesn't get any better and if you have medical insurance, maybe call the advice nurse and describe your symptoms. They usually ask you questions that lead to letting you know whether you need to come in to get a throat swab or not.
Some advice that I've gotten over the years is to gargle with salt water (YUCK, but the salt is supposed to dilate your vessels and reduce the swelling) and to use throat lozenges. Sucking on lozenges (or even hard candy) seems to help.
Hope you feel better soon! |

I had a bad case of sore throat a few months ago. It lasted for 2 weeks and it hurt so bad that I had trouble eating. My lymph nodes were swollen and my ears were hurting as well. Dr confirmed it wasn't strep and eventually it went away on its own.
Hope you feel better soon! |

I always get a sore throat when I travel by plane which I do quite often. My remedy to ease the pain is simply hot milk or hot chocolate. I it sort of act as a "balm" and take the worst pain of for a while. Hope you feel better |

I sooth my sore throats with an Emer'genC drink. I gargle with it before swallowing.
I usually see white spots when I have strep, but not always. One or both of my tonsils will get quite red though, so if your tonsils look somewhat normal and you have no fever, my guess is that it probably isn't strep.
However, If you think that it might be strep, please go to a doctor right away! Strep throat can kill you -- I know because that is what happened to a friend of my brothers. It is dangerous because it is a serious infection that likes to spread, and your throat is very close to your brain.
Take Care,

Oh criminey, I used to get strep throat a couple times a year... it HURTS!!
Started taking stress tabs, and moved on to other ways of supplementing and eating well over time, but back then they really helped prevent! The high B vitamin and C content was the key. Haven't had it since.
My famous winter drink is worth a try too
3cloves garlic in 3 cups water bring to boil
remove from heat strain, add, .5 cup fresh lemon juice, .5 cup raw honey. Take .5 cup warmed 3 x day.
Avoid orange juice and dairy.
Feel better soon! |

I had tonsilitis when I was 26. When I finally got myself to the doctor (three days later), I was given penicillin and it went away four days later. I had never felt worse in my life. It felt just like you are describing. |

I hope you feel better soon, Aries! I recommend the doctor too, but try gargling with hydrogen peroxide mixed with warm water. It will make your throat bubble, but it always helps me some. Don't swallow it, though! |

I'm finding more and more people still have their tonsils. I had no choice in the matter - mine were yanked out when I was 2 years old, along with my adenoids because I had breathing problems as a toddler (my Mom says I snored like a hibernating bear!). It seemed growing up, no one I knew still had their tonsils.
Is there any reason to keep them? I suppose its fine to do so unless they cause problems. Having one's tonsils removed does not prevent strep throat - for a few years I was getting strep once or twice a year. Thought I'd die. But I haven't had it in a few years (knock wood). |

Thanks girls,
Finally back in the office today after missing 2 days of work.
Feel much better, It's so much better and the pain/swelling is virtually gone. It literally lasted 1 1/2 weeks and my right ear did hurt a little. It may have been strep I have no idea, didn't go to the doctor since it went away on it's own. I did drink plenty of liquid and orange juice and that seemed to help a lot.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I have a feeling this may come back in the winter |

Glad you're feeling some better, Aries!
MermaidGirl, your tonsils function in the immune system. That's why they're no longer yanking everybody's out. They realized that the problem was not that the tonsils were making you sick. The tonsils were just trying to fix what was wrong, and that's why they were acting up. |

ariesxtreme I just noticed this thread right now. I am glad that you seem to be over your sore throat regardless of what caused it.
I would doubt that is was strep since that is a bacterial infection and those don't generally clear up on their own without antibiotics.
Here is something that I have experienced before. Once in a while I get a pain in my throat and also feel it in my ear and in my eustacian (spelling?) tube area. It doesn't feel like a sore throat but more of a pain like the kind that happens when I swallow a pretzel piece or something similar and it sort of injures my throat. I have never gone to the doctor for this and now that I think of it it hasn't happened in years but when it did happen it would last up to a week and then gradually go away. I am thinking that maybe my eustacian tube gets infected sometimes or that it may have something to do with TMJ (apparently I have a very mild case although I never really notice it). Just thought I would mention this in case any of it sounds familiar. |
