Can anyone help with making smokey eyes that don't make you look like you've been punched senseless? Tips on the Internet suggest smudging with green or brown eyeshadow, but what other colours will work? Step-by-step instructions are very much appreciated! TIA! |

Hi pumpingmummy
The way I do it is line my eyes along the upper lash lines with eyeliner a few times, then use smudge brush or q tips to slowly and gently smear it upward. I don't like too dramatic looks, so I don't top it with more eyeshadow. I love smoky eyes in chocolate, charcoal grey and navy. I can't use green as it doesn't suit my Asian skin well. However, I was advised by an SA at MAC that the most important thing is to make sure you wear concealor on your undereye area so you don't get the panda eye effect or make your eyes look sunken. I hope that helps. |

Also, you should put neutral base eyeshadow color (such as Bobbi Brown Eyeshadow in Bone) in eye socket area first. |

There's more than one way to create a smokey eye, I've found. Sometimes I'll line my upper lid with black, then smudge. THen, with the 'residue' on the smudger, I'll go over my bottom lids so I'll get something subtle. Then, I'll brush on a shimmery beige like BE 'nude beach' or 'bareskin' and finish with a coat of black mascara. THis is a nice subtle smokey eye that's good even for day. You could do the same look with a green or purple shadow, instead of beige.
OR, I'll go all out. I'll start with a medium gray and sweep that all over my lids. Then I'll apply a darker gray to the crease and halfway along the upper lid. Then, I'll blend an inky black shadow along my upper lids. I'll use the dark gray to line my bottom lids because black seems to be too much there. I use Victoria's Secret eyeshadow palette in Satisfied for this look.
Don't forget the primer! Nothing works better than Urban Decay Primer Potion. |

Mally Roncal sells eyeshadow palettes to create natural smokey eyes w/either blacks, browns, greens or plums. It really is a fail safe way to create a natural smokey eye. Even the black kit is very soft. Her cosmetics are sold on QVC, but I don't see the eyeshadow kits anymore. I know that they were sold out the last time I saw her on air. |

I put a layer of base color on first (eg. Mac's Shroom) and this allows for much easier blending later. Without a base eyeshadow, black and dark colors go on really harshly and do not blend well. Then I put on eyeliner, which is usually the liquid kind for night. Then a medium shade over the lid. Followed by a dark shadow that start at the eyeline and blended upwards, or in a 'c' shape that curves from the crease onto the eye line. You could easily use grays, plums, greens, browns, corals, or any color and slowly pile it on for a smokey eye effect. HTH! |

Thanks y'all for the replies!
It would seem I need a primer whatever method I choose - do I have alternatives to the Urban Decay one? I have the BB Bone eyeshadow lynn2525 suggested, but it doesn't stay all day (my lids are so oily). I also have BB (I have lots of BB stuff ) cream eyeshadow stick which I'm told could be used as a primer, but I haven't tested its staying power.
violetanne, I've been searching for grey eyeshadows for the longest time! Which ones do you use?
nikkilici0us, is there a particular plum that's your fave? I like BB eye shadows, but I'm game to try anything that looks good! |

MAC Shadowy Lady e/s is a very dark plum (MAC website describes it as a 'dark veiled plum'), superb on the outer corners of the crease. Pairs up nicely with virtually any other color, this is a great alternative to black e/s for a smouldering smokey eye. |

Definitely get the UDPP. I just bought it (all the way from America!) and it does effectively keep my eyeshadows creasing. I have the whole "looks-like-monolid" thing going on, meaning every eyeshow always end up in a thin line in my crease after 3 hours. |

Me, too! Our eyelids sound like sisters. I've never really bothered much with primers before because I don't usually wear much eyeshadow (probably because of this problem, come to think of it). |

I use the Victoria's Secret shadow palette in Satisfied. Their shadows have a lot of pigment. I had some Rimmel shadows before that, but they're not so great. Not very much pigment. |

smokey-eyes
with concealer, do not take it up to right under the eye rim of the lower lash's as this makes you look more tired (if you are)
you can use a lovely deep purple (tinged with grey/silver) for brown/hazel eyes. Barry M do a fantastic one, which is heather coloured but with silver almost like moths wings shade mixed in. Its very cheap and allows you to mix it with distilled water to create a more fixed/definitive line.
i have used purple at the bottom and deep green at the top before and it looks different and surprisingly very easy to wear.
i agree the best way is to smudge- waterproof MAC does a great job with eye pencils.
Good luck
