After much urging from my hair stylist, I finally put reddish highlights in my black hair. When I left the salon I noticed that I already have a little bit of "roots." Is that normal? My hair stylist says that she doesn't put color too close to the scalp because the heat from my scalp will alter the color. Is that true? My hair grows fast so I am kinda discouraged I already have half an inch of roots.

What is a good shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair?

I think Pureology is a great line for color proctecting shampoos and conditioners.

I'm not a hair color specialist but my mom is! lol that doesn't really matter... but the last time I had my hair 'highlighted' (it wasn't in the traditional sense) the guy went down to the roots. However, with regular streaky highlights I'm pretty sure they never apply the color all the way to the scalp because the color will bleed.

I've also heard that if the color is applied to close to the root (for highlights) that the color will come out lighter there and look odd.

I wouldn't be too worried. Most highlights are applied a few mm away from the scalp. And in terms of your hair growing fast... with highlights (vs. regular all-over hair coloring) you have a lot more grow out allowance before you start looking like you *need* to have a touch up.

Your colorist was right. The heat from your scalp will make the bleaching effect stronger near the roots so your highlights would develop quicker at the roots. In other words, your hightlights would be lighter near the roots if the chemicals were applied too close to the scalp.

I have heard of this before and the post the other day about the toxic ingredients started me thinking. I have dark hair and use semi perm color to cover grey and have been for a few years so I guess I am already in the 40% increased risk category according to that study. My question is - what are our alternatives as far as covering grey? I don't like the matte look of henna. If I want a shiny healhty look is my only choice regular hair dye?

for shampoo and conditioner, I would like to recommend TIGI Catwalk. Very helpful for my highlights!

At one salon that I went to, she did the same and I was not happy with it. I made her redo it because I paid to get it done properly and already I had roots.
