Hi everyone,
Last week I bought Laura Mercier Oil Free Foundation from Holt renfew but I didn't like the color.. it's too dark and I want to exchange for a lighter one. Do you know if it's possible to exchange? because I've already used twice. Befpre the same happened to me when I bought Chanel foundation from the Bay but i wasn't able to do so
Thanks! |

Hmmm, my experience has been that department stores never like to exchange because of an incorrect shade (except the bay for MAC). What I usually do, is tell them that my skin reacted badly to the product. Then either go and buy the same thing in a different shade at another store or wait a few days until you see a different SA working the counter.
Hopefully Holt will take it back, just call them first before you go in person to find out what their policy is, so just incase you do have to be a sneak like me, they won't recognize you!
I now my method sounds sneaky- but hey, they should match u up perfectly in the first place!

I've returned products at HR before, usually because I've had a nasty reaction (either at Chanel, Dior or YSL, can't remember). Even if the SA looks formidable, I use my calm, repetitive, won't-take-no-for-an-answer method and it always works.
Anyway, the Laura Mercier SAs are great at loading you up with samples, if you ask. I never buy anymore without first getting a sample, especially foundation, primer, eye cream, etc. If they say they don't have pre-packaged samples OR sample containers, I ask if it would be alright if I provided my own sample containers. Just pick up a few at a pharmacy (at the prescription counter) and re-appear at said make-up counter.
I got a large enough sample of Ystheal for a month at a drugstore that way. I smiled lots! |

I agree with Canadian Girl. If you tell them that you had a bad reaction or broke out from the LM foundation, you won't have any problem returning it. But, if an SA helped you to choose the color you have, then they should be willing to exchange for a better match. |

I once returned a custom made foundation from Prescriptives, Holt Renfrew. I thought that was going to be a hard feat, since the MA went through all this trouble to make it for me. The shade was off on me and I didn't end up liking its consistency so I went back to tell them I had a reaction. The only time I was thankful I had hormonal acne was the time I pointed to my pimples and said "see I broke out from your product." |

Hahahah, I have to remember these strategies as I am moving to Canada. I must say I am spoiled by the CS here in US. I return stuff to Ulta all the time, opened or unopened, no questions asked. |

Christine, the one reason I buy things from the bay is that they take back ANYTHING for ANY reason. I've returned lipsticks I don't like ...but..I always put it on my Bay bill for added leverage. |

Thank you everyone for all your tips! They are useful I think I might try to call Holt first and see what they will say and then I'll exchange for a new one when I see that the same SA is not there .. But I think they should exchange it because the SA actually helped me choose the color.
Canadian Girl, your method does sound a bit sneaky but I actually did it once at Sears! but not with a foundation, it was a moisturizer .. I thought it was too rich for me and they refunded it without asking any question
pinky1, I never heard that we can ask for those samples! Usually, I only ask for skincare and I did ask this time to try their brightening line .. I heard people said the serum is quite good but the SA said she can't give me the sample coz anyway I'm not gonna notice the result from using just a few days
Moocheez, it's great that they never asked you when u return stuff to them.. I wish I can do the same here. |

Holt Renfrew are good with samples. With buying foundation, i'd suggest getting a sample of the color along with your purchase. Try the sample first before opening up the foundation bottle. If you dont like the foundation color from the sample, then you can return it easily.
I was at Holt Renfrew and asked an employee what their return policy is. They said that I can only return things if i havent used it because they are generous with samples so I can try and test the colors out first before buying.
If you got an allergic reaction from it then i'm sure they can refund you |

Yes,and 'having an allergic reaction' is sales-speak for 'I don't like the color'..I have a friend who's an SA & that's what she puts down if I regret any hasty purchase. Mind you, Holt's policies change practically monthly so you never know.... |

hi guys, it's me again.
Yesterday I just went to Holt and got it refunded. The BA just asked if I've changed my mind and then i said yes and she said ok and was very nice to me. (Not the same BA that helped me before)
So I guess it's not that scary to go back and ask for refund ^^ |

yeah Christine!
I'm glad you got a nice BA.
I tried to return a clarins product at the bay the other day and at first they told me that they don't do refunds on used items- and I said too bad, cuz I'm not spending $75 on something that made me break out.
Then they tried to make me buy something else for the $75 (the girl was from the benefit counter). I just held my ground and demanded a refund- which I got!
