Well, after years of putting off my dream, I am thinking of finally taking the leap and developing my own website. My main goal is to introduce my line of handcrafted natural skin care to others. I'll also be promoting my services such as holistic therapies,education and training courses, hand crafted jewellery, natural products, etc etc... Now I just need to find out what the most expensive way about it is. I have found a few webhosting sites that offers some free basic templates but they aren't exaclty what I want. I have some knowledge of HTML and CSS but not enough to customize an entire website on my own so I at least want a basic template to start from. I'd get a designer if I could afford to but it's not in the budget right now. My question goes out to those of you with your own websites. Who is your web host, what kind of services should I look for, what are must haves, what should I beware of etc etc. This is a big step for me so I appreciate any advice and tips out there. Also I'm in Canada so would love to get tips for Canadian hosting sites. etc. Thanks to all in advance.  |

wildflower, i have no information on website development but wanted to say 'you go girl'!
I'm always excited when i see a Canadian beauty/natural products site. I'm in the GTA area so when you get it up and running, there's a good chance i'll be a customer....

There's a lot of people on the net who don't mind building layouts for free...I'm on a host that gives me seemingly unlimited bandwidth and space, and is free, but she requires that you have her domain in front of your url, I believe. If you bought a url on yahoo for a couple bucks, maybe I could talk to her and see what can be set up...
I'm in the same situation with my own site. I don't want to pay anyone, but I don't know where to start looking. |

OH I should say you are really great~!!!
I am planning to build a webside of mine as well. I am dreaming to have my brand of jewellery, in fact pearls. But I think it'll be after 5-10 years. HAHA Maybe at that time I would go and ask for your advice.
I have a friend of mine expert at this area and he promised to do the HTML or CSS or other webside work for me. |

Hi Wildflower,
Check out godaddy.com.
Domain names are very inexpensive there ... as is hosting.
If you go with a local ISP you can pay $20 per month for hosting ... so godaddy.com is a fairly cheap host.
As for design ... can you get hold of Frontpage or Macromedia? If not ... there are lots of web page editors around ... some free ... some inexpensive.
Frontpage has some great style/theme pages that work well ... and they are easy to work with as well.

| Buying a nice professional template will cost you less than $100 and keep costs down. I was pathetic with Dreamweaver but if you learn a bit or have friends to help out it may work out well.www.templatemonster.com |

| I would suggest not signing up for a .ca domain. It has different regulations- not that it mattered much but I remembered that it was kind of annoying. I agree that godaddy is good. Domaindirect is good too. |

| I've usedwww.tigertech.net for years. Their prices are excellent and they have great customer service. The cheapest plan is $6.25/month on their annual plan which includes the registration fee for your domain name. The $6.25 account gives you 5 GB of space, 100 GB of bandwidth and 50 e-mail accounts. There's all sorts of other bells and whistles too that you can use or just ignore like hosting your own mailing list. |

So far I have looked at a few webhosting services and am leaning towards the following: www.bravenet.com ,www.doteasy.com ,www.look.ca , andwww.bluefur.com. I have 2 friends who are currently using doteasy and look and seem to be happy with them so far. Has anyone ever heard of these? Are they any good? Any good or bad experiences that you've heard of?
I also have a friend who is currently learning to build and design websites who said she would help out if she had time. (I'm praying she will.) She just signed up for some design courses and said she might want to practice so I ny project could be her little experiment. LOL
I'm going to start looking into everyone's suggestions now. Thanks again for your help. Really appreciate it. |
