I am going to start running and I haven't the faintest clue on what kind of shoes to buy. I really dislike running, so comfort is very important. TIA! I need to start some sort of exercise plan, as my energy level is embarrassingly POOR. |

I always go into a sports shoe shop like The Athlete's Foot so that they can fit me properly. The last couple of pairs I bought for walking and running (I SO HATE RUNNING), were Brooks and Adidas. They are both fabulously comfortable. |

Asics running shoes have great support and comfort. I don't run but because of my foot problems I need to wear a supportive running shoe. My doctors recommended Asics or Brooks. |

See if you can go to a running/athletic store rather than a general shoe store. They'd be able to rec a brand. Some brands are better for feet that pronate(?) and turn inward.
I just started running also and I wear New Balance. They're fine. Can't say they're great b/c I don't know what a great running shoe is. As long as it gives me no problems, it's good for me. |

I just picked up a pair of New Balance 472 Trail Running shoes at Marshalls for $35. I bought another pair before in size 6.5 US but they were too small. Those say running inside the soles. I tried to exchange them for 7 but this Marshalls doesn't have the same style, so I went with what they got. This Trail running shoes seem light and comfy. I only wore them twice though on the treadmill. So far my toe didn't get hurt again yet. |

Thank you, ladies! All of your answers have been duly noted.
peppy, I'll take your advice and go into a store and get a proper fitting.
About how much should I expect to spend for a pair of Brooks/Asics/New Balance?
Thanks, all! |

I have worn Aisics for the past two years and they are great. If you have a small running store in your town, I would recommend going to that over a large athletic store. Most of these small stores are owned by very experienced runners and they'll even let you take the shoes for a test run around the block. |

I'm in total agreement with the tip to go to a running store and get fitted properly -- they'll analyze your stride, arch, foot shape, etc. and it really helps.
HOWEVER -- that said, my friend and I went to Road Runner when we were both training for a triathlon together, and we found out that we had VERY different foot shapes and stride patterns, and yet they still wound up putting us in the exact same shoe. Since then, I've spoken with many other female runners, and I often get nods of recognition and appreciation when I mention my shoe.
It's the Aasics Kayano, and while I think you should still check with the store and see what they want you to try on, this might be a good starting point. If you buy them brand new they can be very expensive, but I often find I can get discontinued or out-of-season colors for cheaper online or at places like Big 5, so it's worth checking around if you don't want to pay the normal retail of US $130.
Hope this helps, good luck running! Also, my old roommate loaned me a book once that was A Woman's Guide to Running or something, and I found it really really helpful as a novice (which I still am), so you might take a look at that if you feel like you need some guidance. Have fun! |
