Like many of us, I've been on the prowl for a good UVA/UVB highly protective sunscreen that is cosmetically elegant. And I have yet to find the perfect solution, though this summer while in Europe I stocked up on the new Avene emulsion sunscreen formula. Perfect? Not by a long shot, but so far it's the best I've tried.

But here's the rub: by mistake one of the tubes I bought is a tinted version. I figured that would be all the better--a bit of complexion evening out would be terrific. However, I know that you have to use an entire half teaspoon of sunscreen to get the tested amount of sun protection. Usually that means smoothing some on, waiting a minute or two, and then adding a finishing layer. But when I tried that with the tinted sunscreen, I looked like a Barbie doll!! The worst fake makeup look you can imagine.

Because the darned stuff is so pricey, I'm using it up by mixing it in small amounts with my untinted Avene sunscreen.

So, is it really necessary to use so much? And if it is, how in the world can anyone use a tinted sunscreen? Or are other brands much less aggressively tinted than the Avene?

I prefer to go with sunscreens with more effective UVA ingredients--tinosorb is my current choice, though I was using mexoryl earlier. Wonder when the FDA will finally get with the program and approve the current generation of sunscreens? Not until there's a new generation of European sunscreen ingredients to ignore?

OK, flitcraft, I'll let you in on my secret - SVR 50. It is 100% chemical, spf 50, ppd 20, and tinted to PERFECTION!! It leaves an elegant finish, too! I get it at skincarecentral dot biz. The only downside is it's $35, but considering how great it truly is for sooooo many things it's worth it IMHO. I often don't need concealer, and it blends in beautifully!

Some folks like the Juice Beauty light tinted moisturizer - about $35, I think, and it's fairly pale in its tint but it also leaves a whitish cast on some darker skin tones. Most Sephora stores stock this so you can ask for a free sample there.
