I would like to give an update on my rosacea plan of action. You all have been very helpful and supportive with ideas on how to treat my rosacea. Thank you.
My current regime AM and PM
Wash with Bio2 Gentle Facial Cleanser
Rinse with at least 30 splashes of tepid water
Spray with Avene Thermal Water
While face is still damp, apply Bio2 Aminosome Moisture Gel (love this stuff!!!)
While face is still damp, apply Avene Cicalfate Cream
The Bio2 products are available at http://www.oxymist.com/
I purchase my Avene at http://www.frenchcosmeticsforless.com/
Sun Care: My dermatologist thinks that the Cicalfate has enough Zinc to provide some sun protection even though it is not SPF rated.
I, also, take one Heliocare tablet daily for sun protection.
Skin Cancer + treatment of pre-cancers: Aldara 7 times a week for six weeks for my basal cell carcinoma; Aldara two times a week for 16 weeks to treat pre-cancers.
Dermatologic Procedures: Twelve treatments with LED Gentle Waves; I am thinking of buying my own LED unit.
I have been treated with the V-Beam laser in the past, but, I am planning to try IPL after I finish the Gentle Waves treatment and the Aldara treatment. Then V-Beam again for any broken capillaries that have not responded to IPL.
Blackheads on Nose: Avage, Tazarotene Cream .1%, on nose two times per week.
Notable Mentions: I have been able to successfully use Crème de la Mer and Sisley Crème Reparatrice.
Supplements: Omega 3, Vitamin C Ester, Selenium, Biotin, and a Multi-Vitamin.
I am 51 with very sensitive skin. I have very few wrinkles and if not for the redness and broken capillaries, I would be very pleased with my skin. My current regime is holding the line and I do notice some capillaries fading.
I wrote this in case anyone else is struggling with their rosacea; I am hoping that it might give you all some ideas on how to treat it and keep it from getting worse. |

Charmed1 - Thanks for your regime. Does your Derm not have you on Metrogel/Metrocream? |

Hi Charmed -
I'm glad you've found a regime that works for you!
I'm having success with New Chapter Supercritical Omega 7 supplement which is Sea Buckthorn seed and fruit, plus rosemary and calendula.
I'm also using Finacea. (prescription), and Nicomide a prescription supplement. |

Hi,
I have used Metrogel in the past and Finacea. For some reason, when I hit 50 (possibly menopause), my skin went crazy. Maybe sun-damage? I had inflammation, increased redness, etc. I had never had much success with either Metrogel or Finacea; so, my derm decided less is more and told me not to use them.
My skin looked great in my twenties and thirties (of course, I did not appreciate it at the time ~ things always look better in retrospect!); I started noticing minor troubles in the forties with increased broken capillaries. By fifty, my skin was "out of control". Sometimes even my derm was surprised by the degree of inflammation my skin exhibited.
The LED unit that I am looking at is 1000 dollars; I think you can find them for less. The Gentle Waves LED treatment was 1000 dollars for twelve treatments. So, when I finish the Gentle Waves, it makes sense to me to put the money in my own unit. I never intend to do plastic surgery, etc., so I can sort of justify buying an LED unit.
I think the trouble with my skin began with the basal cell carcinoma; I realized that my skin was damaged even though it was not showing it on the surface at that time. I think that the damage is now surfacing and is exacerbated by my rosacea. The things people would normally use for damaged skin like retinoids, acids, Obagi are a "no-no" for skin with rosacea. I do use Avage, but, only on my nose, which is fairly sturdy. In my opinion, it is kind of a conundrum ~ treat the damage or deal with the inflammation and the rosacea. I am working on the rosacea and treating some of the pre-cancers. |

P.S. I am rather surprised by the effect the LED is having on my skin ~ it seems like it would do nothing. But, I notice subtle changes in my capillaries. I think IPL is better (stronger) and I will do that next.
I already had IPL on my chest and neck and was very pleased with the results.
V-Beam is great, but, the capillaries come back over time, as I guess they do with everything. |

That's good to know about the IPL - I'm thinking about trying it soon. What results did you have with it?
I know just what you mean about having to choose between treating the damage or the rosacea. It's a struggle. |

Yogi~
About IPL on chest and neck. I was around 50 when I had it done. My chest looked younger, more even skin tone, less crêpe ~ a huge improvement. The results are still holding about one year later. I wear V-necks and scoop necks and some people notice that my chest has no sun damage. Before, my chest was red with little lines, like crêpe. |

May I ask why you or your doctor decided no to take out BCC? Also, did you discuss with your doctor the use of LED in light of BCC? Also, they have a prescription ointment when people have a lot of sun damage to prevent future BCCs ( I believe it is strong form of vit. A , but I could be wrong).

I caught the BCC very early. I,
personally, did not want MOHS surgery after seeing pictures online.
Aldara is FDA approved for the treatment of BCC.
My BCC on my nose has been gone about two years. I have another pre-cancer spot on my nose and one on my upper lip ~ I am treating these pre-cancers with Aldara per my derm.
While I had great success with Aldara; I cannot in good conscience recommend it, as some people have very bad side effects from it impacting their immune system.
I love Aldara for me. I,also, love estrogen for me. I just know they both have nasty side effects and would not recommend them for others, unless they did extensive research and felt comfortable with the possible ramifications.
P.S.I have no active, diagnosed BCC at this moment. I used the Aldara 7 days a week two years ago; I now use it two times a week for pre-cancers (Sorry,if I was not clear on this point). The Avage on the nose is a retinoid product related to Vitamin A derivative and may help with
pre-cancers.
P.S.S. Would LED or IPL be unsafe for skin prone to skin cancer? Thank you, Lucy, for the suggestion. It kind of makes sense that they may not be safe. |

"Oral retinoids can reduce basal cell carcinoma (BCC) incidence in genetically susceptible patients, and one topical retinoid, tazarotene, has been reported to cure some sporadic BCCs. Therefore, we have tested whether this agent would affect BCCs in Ptch1+/– mice in a controlled chemoprevention trial. We found that topical tazarotene dramatically inhibits the formation of BCCs induced with either UV or ionizing radiation. The ability of tazarotene to inhibit BCC formation in this mouse model provides encouragement for the use of tazarotene in skin cancer chemoprevention trials in humans."

Avage is a form of tazarotene,so, maybe it will help with pre-cancers. |
