Hi all, I had my hair chemically straightened a couple of months ago and was really happy with the results, except now when I wash it loads comes out in the shower. I've never had problems with hairloss and thought my hair was falling out, but when I actually looked at the strands they don't seem to be coming out from the root, I think they're just breaking off! The structure of my hair has changed, in that I used to have really coarse hair whereas now the strands are a lot finer. Anyone have any suggestions for a good treatment that can strenghthen hair and prevent breakage (I'm thinking I probably need something with keratin)? Any advice would be much appreciated, TIA!! |

Hair can't really be strengthened once it's damaged, since it's dead material. But what you can do, is to make it appear less damaged, and also to prevent further damage. I suggest that you look into the Extreme range from Redken, which has different options. Personally, I like the Anti-Snap leave in from that line.
But damaged hair lacks both protein and moisture, and since too much protein can cause breakage, it is a good idea to first take a protein treatment and then follow it up by a moisturizing treatment.
Some nice lines to consider, includes the aforementioned Redken Extreme (for protein) and All Soft (for moisture), but Joico also has some very good products in the K-Pak series. |

Sounds like your hair needs some extra t.l.c. Having over-processed my own hair several years ago, I can understand your situation, and may offer some advice from experience.
Terax Crema
I cannot begin to express what a wonderful, effective product this is! I have used it for many years, and there's a reason why it's a cult classic, year after year

This may be used as your regular conditioner after shampooing and as a deep-conditioning treatment. When deep-conditioning, leave it in for about half an hour. It will be more effective when used with heat, so wrap your hair in plastic (or use shower cap), sit under a bonnet hair-dryer if you have one, or simply wrap a warm towel over the plastic wrap.
Redken Extreme CAT Protein Reconstructing Treatment
Prior to deep conditioning, shampoo, remove excess water, and and spray this treatment through your hair. You can mix it with your deep-conditioner. Leave it on as you do when deep-conditioning.

Coconut oil - put it on dry hair and let it soak in for a few hours or overnight - then wash. Really soaks into damaged hair - like mine |

Great suggestions from other people, I especially like Redken Anti-Snap. I've started taking fish oil capsules and hair and nail supplements for my hair, I think I'm starting to feel a difference but hard to say so far. |

A good hair mask helps my dry hair out immensely.
I am a big fan of Kenra products, and their Nourishing Masque is one of my favorites. I have a heating cap that I purchased at Sallys Beauty Supply and I lather my hair once a week and sit under the cap for a good 20 minutes. Heat is really the trick to getting a product to penetrate. |

A heating cap - wow. I am sure that really helps the product to work. |

Oh! A heating cap.....hadn't thought of that. Sally, here I come. I've always put plastic wrap over my conditioner slathered hair and then wrapped warm towels around it, but that would be much easier. |

I second the Terax! The only conditioner that untangled but bum length hair extensions! Amazing stuff. |

Olive oil. Apply before washing and leave it on for about 10-15 mins. Wash with your normal shampoo after that. |

Heat is a great idea! I could put it on before I go in my far infrared sauna. I will try coconut oil today. |

Hi, does anyone know how much a heating cap is? Also is there a particular brand that is better than others? |

Well I went to Sally's today looking for that heat cap others were mentioning and the sales lady said they have a processing cap. There's 3 of them in a pack for .69. I'm not sure if that's the one that is being mentioned here or not, but I couldn't find one that said "heat cap". |

Thanks for all your replies, some great suggestions. Caspers mum I think I'll definitly try the the Terax, I've heard of it before. Nemi I didn't realise too much protein could cause breakage!! Redken leave-in treatment sounds like a good option as well. I've also invested in a heating cap, and hair & nail supplements so hopefully after all these I'll be seeing some results!! |

The Burts Bees Avocado Butter Hair Treatment is really good. My hair is not really that processed but it is quite long and dry and brittle. I leave this on over night sometimes and it does really rehydrate my hair and it smells great. I mentioned this on another post as well but I also have a silk pillow case which seems to really help with my hair also.
I almost straightened my hair with the boots DIY kit earlier this year but I got cold feet and returned it. I'm glad I did as I am sure my hair would have suffered badly for it.
Hope you find somethink that helps!
P.S. Dr Hauschka Neem hair oil is also good. |
