Hi, I can't claim to have tried everything in way of hairstyling products but I have yet to find the ultimate product for styling my curly/somewhat wavy hair. They either make your hair dry like straw when you first put the stuff in ( in my case a mousse ) and then when it finally softens after like several hours , the hair is so tangled and quite difficult to detangle without losing some hair unnecessarily. And the when I wake up the next morning it feels like well-chewed chewing gum!
Does anyone know of any product that can help to curl the hair without making it feel like chewing gum ?
By the way, you gals out there who've had both curly and straight hair, do you feel that you lose less hair when you keep your hair straight or is it my imagination ?
Thanks! |

Hi Cindy-- I hate mousse, too, most of the time. I have come across some good ones, but I haven't used it in so long I couldn't tell you what they were. As far as curls go, I do have naturally curly hair, but I rarely use a product specifically for curly hair. There is a good one by John Freida called Dream Curls-- it's a spray that defines curls but doesn't dry crunchy. I would think a curl activating cream is what you're after. |

Thanks for the tip violettanne. Got any brands that I should try or did you mean the John Frieda spray ? I read some not so flattering reviews of his products in another forum. Any other brand you could suggest ?
Thanks! |

Hey Cindy,
I have coarse, thick, wavy hair that I can wear curly if I encourage it, or straight if I flat-iron it. When I go curly, my fave is usually an emollient leave-in conditioner that just helps define and separate. Kiehl's has a couple that really seem to work well. I also use Giovanni's mousse sometimes, which is alcohol-free so even if it makes your hair feel crunchy and gross, it doesn't actually dry it out like normal mousse would. Hope this helps, good luck! |

Thanks a lot for the tip! I'll give it a shot. |

Ok, I've made up my mind that it's curling cream that I need and I would like to know if any of you have tried the following and what you think:
Alagio Crazy Curl
Cutler Curling Cream
Naani's Natural Curly Custard Maximum
Ojon Animated Styling Cream
Philip Pelusi Re-Curl
I'm leaning towards Ojon and Pelusi cos they cost more but if you know of any less expensive product that works do tell! I need a something that helps the natural curls without making the hair stiff and chewing gum-like.
Thanks! |

Hi Cindy,
I've been using Sudzz FX shampoo and conditioner for over a year now and absolutely love it. It keeps my dry curly hair soft, shiny and manageable. link to more detailed review right here: http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=24370&highlight=sudzz
They carry a lot of styling products as well, but I can't speak for their effectiveness. I've also hear a lot of great things about Kinerase formulas for curly hair but there are too many silicones for my taste, which leads to buildup that's difficult to get out. |

I usually wear my hair straight, but when I want to embrace my natural curls I use Matrix curl cream. It comes in the green tub. I think mousses in general cause your hair to be a bit crispy, so I would stick to curl cremes.
I think that you lose the same amount of hair whether you wear your hair straight or curly. It just seems like more falls out when you wear it curly because you aren't brushing it, which helps to pull out those lose hairs. |
