I was wondering if any of you out there have noticed a link between the amount of dairy you ingest and flare-ups? I ask because last week I significantly increased my milk intake, and had 5 very bad, painful zits that are just now calming down. I have stopped drinking so much milk (I usually only take milk in my coffee but was drinking one cup more per day). I also have to be careful of cheese, which has made me quite ill in the past. Could I be lactose intolerant? And this "imbalance" is what's causing the breakouts??

Please share any opinions/similar experiences.

Its very possible you could be lactose intolerant, I would check with my Doc., I'm sure they have some sort of test they can do. Just remember to get your calcium somewhere else!

I've read before (many times, different sources) that milk DOES cause acne. I guess it'll depend on your own tolerance level. My husband used to drink a lot of milk and had breakouts...i told him to lay off it for a while and the breakouts subsided.

Too much dairy makes me very congested and sick. I would not be surprised at all if it caused break outs, too.

Too much dairy and hormones are not a good combination especially for women

The hormones are a good point - maybe try hormone free milk? That's what I use, but it still makes me feel congested. Sad

I LOVE milk and used to drink tons of it. Over the years I have dealt with periods of cystic acne, congested pores and just plain crappy skin. About 9 months ago I cut milk out of my diet because my nursing baby is severely allergic to milk and was having reactions to the milk I was drinking. Since then I think I've had maybe 4-5 small pimples that disappear in a couple days. I've also made changes to my skin care routine, but I am convinced that the elimination of milk from my diet has been a huge factor of my clear skin. Try drinking/baking with the vitamin enriched rice milk. It doesn't taste that bad.

Yes, there is. I did a brown rice cleanse last year. As I was reintroducing certain foods back into my diet, I found that dairy was making me breakout.

I try to keep my dairy to a minimum (mainly my coffee and my yogurt).

I highly recommend doing a brown rice cleanse. It helps you discover which foods you are sensitive to.

I agree with Diana that Rice Milk is a good alternative to milk. You may want to consider Almond Milk too.

What is a brown rice cleanse? Can you describe the recipe/protocol?

Yen, I think it was you that told me that your nutritionist recommended rice milk over the soy milk. I did some research on the soy and agree which is why we are now using the rice milk. Of course I miss the taste of a cold glass of cow's milk, but right now the benefits of not having milk in the house outweigh the cravings.

Diana, since you miss the taste of cow's milk, you should try Almond Breeze (either the Vanilla or the Chocolate flavours). It's loaded with vitamins and it's a lot richer/better tasting than the rice milk. Yes, Almond Milk is approved my ND. Very Happy

Do you have to buy that at a health food store? We only have one grocery store here and they sell the rice milk but not the almond.

Diana, you should be able to get it pretty much anywhere. I've seen it at grocery stores (i.e. Loblaws, Dominion) & health food stores.

Yes I think Dairy could be causing acne, I am lactose intollerant and have not had milk for about 5 years now, you just forget what it ever tasted like.
My skin is clearer, stomach is flatter, I don't have terrible flatulance any more and my sinus's are clearer.
I did not like soya milk or rice milk in my tea so I just switched to drinking peppermint tea.
You do miss dairy initially like cheese on toast and chocolate used to be the worst but after breaking off from these foods I had a relapse one Christmas when I was sat next to the Cadbury Roses tin, I was so ill afterwards Confused I have never been tempted again Laughing
