I feel in order to understand what skin products are best. you need to understand the ingredients in them. I gathered some lists I want everyone to look over so they know what to use.

GLOSSARY

A


African Butter - (See Shea Butter.)

Alfalfa Extract - A natural cleanser and nutrient high in vitamins A, B, C, D and E. An ingredient in many face masks and lotions. Contains saponins (natural foaming agents).

Allspice - The extract of the berries of the Pimento officinalis, an evergreen tree indigenous to the West Indies and South America, generally used as a spice or fragrance.

Allantoin - An extract from comfrey root used as a soothing agent and moisturizer. It can also be made from uric acid, but the comfrey root type is superior.

Almond Oil - Excellent emollient high in oleic, linoleic and other fatty acids, ideal in the treatment of very dry skin. Soothing and moisturizing.

Aloe (Aloe Vera) - A superb hydrator and soothing agent, very beneficial to damaged hair and dry, chapped or sun-exposed skin. Promotes skin healing through regeneration of new skin cells.

Aloe-Mucopolysaccharides - (See Mucopolysaccharides.)

Amino Acid Complex (Cystine, Cysteine, Methionine) - Sulfur-rich amino acids essential to protein metabolism, very nourishing to the hair and skin. Together they help balance and normalize the skin and scalp.

Annatto - Waxy extract from the herb Bixa orellana, used as a natural color. (See also Bixane Herb.)

Apple Oil - Extracted from the peel of apples and combined with the juice from the pulp. Contains malic acid, an antioxidant and natural pH adjuster. Has a pleasant fragrance.

Apricot, Apricot Kernel Oil - Natural oil from apricot pits, also known as persic oil. An emollient similar in composition to almond oil, it has a softening effect on the skin.

Aristolochia - Known for its conditioning and soothing properties on the skin. An excellent overnight cream ingredient.

Arnica Oil - Arnica flowers infused in the oil are known to be an anti-inflammatory, useful for arthritis and sore muscles in general. Do not use on open skin wounds.

Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) - A powerful antioxidant and skin nutrient (see also Ester-C®).

Avocado Oil - Easily absorbed by the skin and scalp. A good source of vitamins A, D and E, amino acids and sterols. It is very soothing and calming for skin and scalp. Has been used to treat sclerosis of the skin.



B


Beeswax - The wax obtained from the honeycomb. It is used in skin care products as a thickener and emulsifier. In lip balm it helps to protect the lips. If would like yellow colour removed naturally, let sit in sunny area and will be bleached naturally.


Beet Powder/Extract - The extract or juice of beets, used as a natural red color.

Benzoin Gum, - A skin tonic and freshener with antioxidant and preservative properties. Promotes healthy skin and scalp. Has fixative properties.

Biotin - Also known as vitamin H, biotin is part of the B vitamin group. It is an important factor in the growth of tissue and the proper functioning of the oil glands. A biotin deficiency can lead to dry skin, seborrheic dermatitis and the formation of dandruff and crusts in the scalp. Biotin is vital for the maintenance of a normal fat metabolism, and is essential for healthy skin and scalp.

Biting Clematis - Though this herb can be toxic when taken internally, applied topically, it is a calming agent for the skin.

Bixane Herb - The red waxy material in the seeds of the Bixa orellana, a shrub found in South America. It is a natural reddish-brown color, but when mixed with an acid, becomes a deep red. Used as a natural color. (See also Annatto.)

Bladderwrack - An algae high in iodine, often used in massage lotions, creams and foaming bath oils. A skin tonic and nutrient.

Blueberry Leaves - The leaves of the blueberry make a mild, soothing tea that is an excellent, non-drying skin tonic.

Bluebottle - A moisturizing agent for the skin.

Blue Green Algae - Made up of over 50% utilizable protein, blue green algae is an excellent food source, used for thousands of years for its mild taste and easily assimilated nutrients. A good source of enzymes, minerals, trace minerals and antioxidants, its amino acid profile is virtually identical to that of humans, which makes it more readily absorbed by the skin.

Borage Oil - Nutrient-dense oil high in rare gamma-linolenic acid, also found in human breast milk. Combined with Rosa Mosqueta® oil and alfalfa extract, it makes an excellent ingredient for dry or mature skin.

Burdock - A freshener and soothing agent. Its essential oil smooths and revitalizes the hair and promotes a healthy scalp. An excellent ingredient in conditioners, anti-frizz hair care products and styling aids for coarse, curly, hard-to-handle hair.



C


Calendula - The common Marigold (Calendula officinalis), moisturizes and calms inflamed skin. It is a frequent ingredient in ointments and in natural deodorants. Sometimes used as a natural yellow color.


Camellia Oil - Ours is cold pressed from the petals of the flower and the seeds and grown without pesticides. It is moisturizing to the skin and considered one of the best facial oils due to its fast and deep penetration. Used in lotions, creams, and hair care.



Carnauba Wax - A yellow, hard wax from the leaves of the Carnauba palm in Brazil. Has good skin protection properties. Used in lip sticks and lip balms, skin salves, and soap.


Carrot Oil - Rich in beta carotene and vitamins A and E, highly beneficial to hair and skin. Applied topically, it helps balance and normalize dry scalp and skin. Wonderful for maturing skin.

Castile - (See Olive Oil Castile.)


Castor Oil - Use only cold pressed. Skin softening and moisturizing properties. Used in creams, lotions, shampoos, conditioners. Has a stronger odour than most other vegetable oils.


Cayenne Pepper Oil - Its active ingredient, capsaicin, the chemical responsible for making peppers hot, is an excellent warming agent for massage lotions and liniments. Applied topically, it soothes tight, overworked muscles and tension.

Cedarwood Essential Oil - A natural fragrance.

Centaury (Century Herb) - Used in cosmetics to even out skin tones and smooth the skin. Often used as a natural color.


Chamomile - German and or Roman. Relaxing to the mind. German has high amounts of Azulene Acid which helps the skin heal through cell regeneration. Both types lighten hair.


Chestnut Extract - Used as a natural brown color in makeup formulas.

Chlorella - A seaweed often used as a skin hydrator. Combined with other seaweeds (sea ware, laminaria and bladderwrack), it is a key ingredient in vegetarian overnight creams like our Vegacell Herbal Cellular Complex.

Cinnamon - A fragrant spice, used as a coloring agent in natural makeup powders.

Citric Acid - An extract from citrus fruits used as a natural pH adjuster in cosmetics. A basic ingredient in bath balls.



Cleavers - A herb that stimulates the Lymph nodes to drain toxins. Very useful in deodorant body care products.



Clay - Contains minerals. The iron content determines the colour. White is also known as Kaolin, it is used in shaving soaps to give a slippery feel to the product. Clay helps to pull impurities from the skin. Used to colour soaps, bath salts, bath bubblers, and other skin care products.

Clove Oil - Soothing agent. Herbalists often recommend this fragrant herb for sensitive teeth and gums.

Coconut Fatty Acids - Also known as Vitamin F, which contains linoleic, linolenic and arachidonic acids, the essential fatty acids.

Coconut Fatty Alcohols - The long-chain fatty alcohols from coconut palm kernels, which are natural emollients. Synthetic versions of cetyl alcohol are often used in commercial formulations and should be avoided.

Coconut Oil - A rich emollient naturally converted into a soap through a saponification reaction with salt. Beware of cosmetics that bill themselves as "natural" and use a synthetically processed derivative, sodium lauryl sulfate, claiming it comes "from coconut oil." Cranberry Lane also uses a portion of the coconut oil as a soapbase not needing lye - it has been isolated without the use of synthetic ingredients.

Coltsfoot - High in silicic acid and the amino acid cystine, present in the hair protein keratin. Cystine, applied topically, is known to help strengthen and smooth the hair shaft and promote hair health. It is also a superb skin nutrient.

Comfrey - A source of allantoin and mucopolysaccharides, used in celltherapy treatments. Soothing and moisturizing. (See also Allantoin.)


D


Distilled Water - Purified water that has had ions removed. The distillation process also removes nitrates, calcium, magnesium and heavy metals.


E


Eucalyptus - Essential oil used in cleansers, massage formulations and bath oils for its freshening properties and cooling, soothing effect on the skin.

Evening Primrose Oil - A amazing emollient and skin nutrient, high in essential fatty acids. A source of rare gamma-linolenic acid, also found in human breast milk and hemp seed oil. Extremely beneficial for dry skin and scalp. Wonderful for facial products.


F


Fennel - Rich in oleic and linoleic acids, essential fatty acids. It has a smoothing and softening effect on the skin.


Frankincense - Stimulant to the skin. Used for incense and as a fixative for scents. Calms the senses and emotions. Used in soaps, potpourris, body powders, and bath salts. Scent increases with age.


Fruit Acids - A group of acids naturally occurring in fruits and herbs, used in cosmetics to clear and smooth the complexion. Alpha-hydroxy acids is the patented trade name for fruit acids, which are synthetically derived in most commercial formulations. (Alpha-hydroxy acids are now common ingredients in cosmetics, but were originally used as solvents in cleaning compounds and for tanning leather.) Use only fruit acids from natural sources (glycolic, malic, citric, and lactic acids). Individual fruit acids are used in various products for their exfoliating and skin revitalizing properties.

Fucus - A seaweed rich in alginic acid, amino acids, polysaccharides, minerals and vitamins. Its essential oil is a stimulant and tonic, often used in massage lotions and some hair and scalp care products.



G


Geranium Oil - A natural cleanser and skin freshener, sometimes also used as a fragrance. It has hormonal balancing properties.

Ginger - A stimulant, its warming properties are very beneficial to the skin. Sometimes used as a fragrance. In both powdered and liquid form, it is an excellent ingredient for bath oils and other cosmetics.

Glycolic Acid - A fruit acid from sugar cane often used as a peeling agent by dermatologists. (See also Fruit Acids.)

Grain Alcohol - (See Natural Grain Alcohol.)


Grape Seed Oil - From the Muscrat raisins. Excellent penetrative properties. Good for oily skin types, as it doesn't clog pores. Used in skin lotions, creams, and massage oils.


Green Tea - A powerful antioxidant, 20 times stronger than vitamin E. Helps prevents free radical damage caused by sun exposure and pollution and protect and revitalize the skin. Used in creams, lotions and suncare products, it is very soothing and moisturizing.

Gum Xanthan - An herbal gum frequently used as a thickener and binding agent in creams and lotions, and as a setting agent in hair sprays and gels. A natural alternative to synthetic polymers such as PVP, found in most commercial hair products.



H


Hamamelis Water - A witch hazel extract, very soothing and cooling to the skin.


Hibiscus Flower - Contains Vitamin C and is a good anti-oxidant. Is a natural dye and is used in teas, infusions for skin care, toners, lotions, and creams.


Hops - A sedative and skin softener.

Horsetail - Often used in conjunction with coltsfoot in hair care products. High in silicic acid and the sulfur-rich amino acid cystine. It helps normalize and balance the skin and scalp. Has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Also beneficial for nail treatments.



I


Indigofera (Indigo Blue) - A safe, natural plant color (deep blue to purple) and skin freshener.

Inositol - Naturally occurring in lecithin, this B vitamin is produced by the body in greater quantities than any other nutrient. Essential for cell respiration, it helps maintain scalp health. (Also see Vitamin B-complex.)

Iodides - Compounds containing iodine, naturally occurring in plants that grow in the sea. Applied topically, it is an excellent cleanser and refresher.




J


Jasmine - The essential oil of this aromatic flower, widely used in aromatherapy for its calming effect. A popular herbal medicine in China, often used as a natural fragrance in cosmetics and perfumes.

Jojoba Oil - This rich extract helps the jojoba desert plant retain water during the long summer drought. When used in cosmetic preparations, it not only acts as a humectant, but actually creates a protective film over the skin and hair shaft that helps keep moisture in. Highly effective on dry skin and split ends. We use only organic jojoba oil in our products.
Juniper Berries - Excellent toners, their essential oil is very soothing to the skin.



K


Kaolin (Mt. Kaolin Clay) - A fine, natural clay from Mt. Kaolin, China, known for its drawing properties. Excellent in deep-cleansing face masks.

Karite Butter - (See Shea Butter.)

Kelp - A seaweed high in iodine and vitamins A, B-complex, C and E. A skin and scalp nutrient, soothing and toning.



L


Lavender Oil - Added to ointments and creams for its sedative and cleansing properties. Used in hair care and facial care as it is able to balance the body's output of our natural oils.

Lecithin - A vegetable extract high in natural fatty acids.

Lemon, Lemon Oil - A skin freshener with antioxidant properties, often used in cosmetics for its cool, pleasant fragrance. Lemon oil is obtained from the peel of the lemon. Has astringent properties.

Lemon Grass - A freshener often used as a fragrance. Has antioxidant properties.

Lime Tree - Also known as Linden Tree, its flowers contain an essential oil--farnesol--similar to aloe and camomile. An emollient and soothing agent for the skin.

Liquid Protein - (See Vegetable Protein.)



M
Marigold - (See Calendula.)



Mint - A natural refresher, its cooling and soothing properties make it a good ingredient for cleansers and astringents. Sometimes used as a fragrance.



Mucopolysaccharides - (From aloe vera.) Plant or animal substances which bind with water to form the thick, jelly-like material that cements cells together. Used in skin and hair care formulations for their ability to retain water. (We use only natural, organically-grown aloe vera.)

Myrrh - A superb stimulant and skin tonic. Its mild, skin-freshening action is ideal for sensitive skin. Often used as a fragrance.

N



Natural Grain Alcohol - A powerful antiseptic, naturally obtained through the fermenting of carbohydrates in grains. (Many cosmetic formulations contain isopropyl alcohol, a petrochemical that's much cheaper to use, and very harsh and drying to the skin.)

Nettle - An excellent tonic, high in phosphates and trace minerals. Very beneficial and nourishing to the scalp.

Niacin - Vitamin B-3. (See Vitamin B-complex.)


O


Olive Oil - From the oil of the fruit. Has three pressings, Pomace is the third pressing and is the best for soap making. Used in many skin care products and is easily absorbed into the skin. A good moisturizing oil for dry and sensitive skin types.


Olive Oil Castile - Saponified with salt, it becomes an excellent, mild soap. A natural emollient.

Orange Blossom Water - Obtained from orange blossom, which contains an orange-flower fragrance. Astringent, and skin soothing. Used in soaps, body powders, bath softners, and salts. Is made from the steam obtained distilling the flowers for Neroli essential oil.
Oregano Oil - Powerful skin cleanser and freshener. Helps promote skin health.



P



Palm Oil - Obtained from palm kernels, this rich oil is similar to coconut oil. Naturally saponified, it makes an excellent, mild soap.


Patchouli - Helps with skin regeneration. Cools inflamed skin and aids in healing of sores, wounds, and other skin conditions such as eczema, acne, fungal infections and scalp disorders.


Peanut Oil - An excellent emollient often used in natural massage oils.

Pectin - Obtained from the cell walls of plants, the peel of citrus and the crushed pulp of apples. Used as a thickening agent in natural cosmetics.

Peppermint Oil - An excellent freshener frequently used in shampoos and rinses for its toning effect on the scalp. Very soothing and cooling to the skin.


Potassium Hydroxide - the salt needed in the chemical transformation of vegetable oils (fatty acids) + salt = base (in this case a liquid soap)


Primrose Oil - (See Evening Primrose Oil.)

Protein - (See Vegetable Protein; Soya Protein.)



R



Ratanjot - From the root of the plant. Used to colour soaps, salts, and bath softeners. Use small amounts in bodycare products or staining will occur.



Red Clay - see Clay


Riboflavin - Vitamin B-2, part of the vitamin B-complex.

Roman Chamomile Oil - Known for its sedative and emollient properties, its use in hair and skin care goes back to ancient times. Recommended for all hair types for its soothing properties. Brings out highlights in lighter hair.

Rosa Mosqueta® Rose Hip Seed Oil - Oil from the rose hips of Rosa rubiginosa, a rare rose that grows in Chile's Andes mountains. High in linoleic and linolenic acids as well as vitamin C, essential for the health of the hair, scalp and and skin, Rosa Mosqueta® has been used by South American Indians for hundreds of years for its soothing and moisturizing properties.


Rose Hips - The fruit from various roses. High in vitamin C and has anti-oxidant properties. Prepared in an infusion which is used in skin care preparations such as lotions, creams, and toners.


Rosemary - Toner and freshener, it adds body and softness to lackluster hair. It tones and conditions the scalp and helps remove scalp buildup, and stimulates hair growth.

Rosewater - Has been used in cosmetics since the 10th century. True hydrosol of Rosewater is made from the steam left behind after the distillation of the essential oil. It is soothing to the skin and has moisturizing capabilities.



S


Sage - A refresher and tonic. Its mild cleansing action makes it ideal for sensitive skin or scalp. Only the herb does this, the essential oil is very strong and can be over stimulating to the system.

Sandalwood Oil - The oil from the sandalwood tree, which lends a distinctive natural fragrance to cosmetics.

Saponin - Natural glycosides that foam in water. A mild, natural detergent.

Sea Buckthorn Oil - Richest herbal source of antioxidant vitamins E and A (beta carotene and other carotenoids), which help prevent the formation of free radicals. This nourishing oil is also high in essential fatty acids, particularly rare palmitoleic acid, a constituent of the skin¹s sebum. Sea Herbal Complex - Special blend of herbals from the sea consisting of: Seaweed Extract, Sea Ware Herb and Sea Salts. (For more information on these ingredients, see individual entries.)

Sea Salts - They are used in bath products for their tonic action. Used as an exfoliant, helps detoxify body organs. Have anit-septic properties.

Sea Ware Herb - One of the popular seaweeds used in facial cleansers and creams. It has a toning effect on the skin, particularly when combined with other seaweeds. In facial cleansers it reacts with the oils to form a natural soap.

Seaweed Extracts - Special blend of herbal extracts from the sea consisting of variations of the following: Bladderwrack, Carragahenin, Fucus, Iodides, Laminaria. (Herbals used will vary in different formulations. See list on the bottle or catalog entry for exact Seaweed Extract ingredients on a particular product. For more information on these ingredients, see individual entries.)

Selenium - Micronutrient mineral with strong antioxidant properties, very soothing to the scalp. Included in shampoos and rinses for problem hair, it helps remove buildup and help keep scalp clear and healthy with continued use.

Shea Butter - Moisture-rich butter obtained from the nuts of the Mangifolia tree in Central Africa, also known as karite butter and African butter. One of the best skin care "oils". Contains vitamins and allatoin, giving it healing benefits. A superb emollient, ideal in skin moisturizers, sun care products and hair conditioners.

Soap Bark, Soap Root - (See Yucca Root.)


Sodium Hydroxide - the salt needed in the chemical transformation of vegetable oils (fatty acids) +

salt = base ( in this case a solid bar of soap)


Soya Protein - Vegetable protein from soy. Applied topically, it is an excellent hydrator, readily absorbed by the skin for improved texture. In hair care formulas, it combines with fatty acids and amino acids to coat porous or damaged hair and split-ends. (See also Vegetable Protein.)


Spearmint Leaves - A herb that is a stimulant, astringent, antiseptic, as well as being cooling and toning to the skin. Invigorating to the mind and body. Used in toners, masks, and soaps. Milder than peppermint.



Stearic Acid - Soap making and skin care grades. Skin care grade is used for lotions as it is a much finer wax making it excellent for the skin of the face, and has skin protective and moisturizing properties. Soap grade harderns and "sets" the soap.


Sunflower Oil - An emollient extracted from the seeds of the sunflower. Rich in essential fatty acids, it is a good base for massage oils and lotions.



T


Tansy Flowers - a herb used externally as an insect repellant. Has also been found to relieve rheumatic pain through external use. Do not use during pregnancy.


Tea Tree Oil - Distilled from the leaves of the Australian tree Melaleuca alternifolia. A powerful freshener and cleansing agent with properties similar to eucalyptus oil. It helps normalize and balance the skin and scalp.

Titanium Dioxide - A naturally occurring mineral that actually deflects the sun's burning rays off the skin. This powerful reflecting agent significantly reduces the harmful effects of the sun.

Tumeric Powder - A natural colorant

Vegetable Glycerine - Rich humectant, emollient and lubricant naturally extracted from vegetable oils, used in cosmetic formulations for thousands of years. (Synthetic glycerine, derived from propylene alcohol, is highly irritating to the skin and scalp and should be avoided.)

Vegetable Protein - Termed "the building block of life," protein is our most important food, a leading source of vitamins and essential amino acids. Generally found in meats, eggs and dairy products, protein can also be obtained from soy, wheat and other plant sources. Applied topically, vegetable protein is an excellent hydrator, readily absorbed by the skin for improved texture. In hair care formulas, it combines with fatty acids and amino acids to coat porous or damaged hair and split-ends.

Vitamin A - Used topically, it has been shown to balance and normalize the skin and help keep it clear and healthy. Particularly beneficial for dry or sun-exposed skin, it is often found in sun protection creams for its soothing and hydrating properties. (A vitamin A deficiency in the body reduces the mucopolysaccharides in the skin, which accelerates the skin's aging process.)

Vitamins A, C and E - Their combined action, blended with citrus seed extract, make an excellent natural preservative.

Vitamin B-complex (Herbal) - Water soluble vitamins that when applied topically, help balance and normalize the skin and keep it clear and healthy. Since B vitamins are the regulators of the metabolic functions of our body, they are important to skin cell respiration. Calcium D-pantothenate and inositol are the two B-complex vitamins most beneficial to skin and hair health. (See also Inositol and Panthenol.)

Vitamin B-5 (Panthenol)- A natural hair thickener that helps give hair body and hold. An excellent scalp nutrient and hydrator, also beneficial to the skin. It is sometimes known as Pantothenic Acid.

Vitamin F - Consists of linoleic, linolenic and arachidonic acids, the three essential fatty acids. Vitamin F acts as a skin protector and revitalizer. Used in moisturizers, it soothes rough, dry or chapped skin on contact and helps soften and revitalize dry or damaged hair. The name usually used for vitamin F is essential fatty acids.

Vitamin H - (See Biotin.)


W



Wheat Germ Oil - A skin nourisher that also acts as a natural preservative because of its high vitamin E content.

Wheat Protein - (See Vegetable Protein.)


White Clay - see Clay


Willow Bark Extract - The extract of willow bark. The percursor to Aspirin has anti-inflammatory properties and is also able to gently exfoliate skin. Does contain salicylic acid - do not use if allergic to Aspirin.

Witch Hazel - Natural skin toner extracted from the bark and leaves of the witch hazel plant. Witch

hazel water is 15% alcohol. Contains tannins and low amounts of saponins. Cooling to the skin. Useful for minor skin abrasions, irritated skin, insect bites and burns.



Y


Yarrow - Soothing agent used in skin and scalp treatments for its calming and conditioning properties.

Yeast - High in protein and B vitamins, added to cosmetics for its nutritional value.

Yucca Root - Mild, natural detergent used in shampoos and soaps for its foaming, cleansing abilities. Contains saponins.



Z


Zinc - Mineral essential for growth and skin health. It is often prescribed orally to help control some forms of acne.Has antiseptic and astringent properties. Works well to form slight moisture barrier for skin.
