This is a review for the Kose Moisture Skin Repair line (it is a small and limited product range consisting of the original lotion in two sizes and a face cream).
The active in the products is Rice Power (sic) Extract No. 11, not powder!
I have tried quite a few different Western brand "hydration" products but I find that they are always heavily silicon based or do not have lasting effects on the skin. There are just no parallels between Japanese high end skincare and Western brands. The fundamentals and aesthetics of Japanese skincare is completely different from what we are accustomed to.
I have easily dehydrated skin but I am also prone to congestion/breakouts if I use rich products, I try to use products which help to repair the skin barrier because acne topicals and acne itself is damaging to the skin barrier... and ultimately leads to premature aging.
I had always overlooked Japanese brand serums and lotions too, because of their high alcohol content - most commonly it will be listed as ingredient #2. But somehow, Japanese brands make very cosmetically elegant formulations, and the two big turn offs of any product for me: fragrance and alcohol, do not cause any problems for my skin.
I got several samples of this product by chance, and had put off trying it for the longest time. When you're on Differin, many products seem potentially irritating.
Product aesthetics
Very watery texture, slightly cloudy, and dries a bit sticky against the skin for a few minutes. I guess I am a little sensitive to how products feel against the skin, and I got over any sensations once the product absorbed.
It has a scent, somewhat sharp and fresh, but it does evaporate within minutes once applied. The finish is slightly slippery, but I don't recall seeing silicones on an English translation of the listings.
The results
I was really impressed, as it has been a while since I used something that gave me good results overnight. My skin was more supple, and pores softened. It did not feel heavy against my skin which can become very oily within a few hours without powder.
When I do use this, I use it like a treatment - prepare the skin before with exfoliation, use alone and never consecutively.
I do have to admit, even in the colder climate now in the Southern hemisphere (although it is still very humid), I can see that it will cause some mild congestion as the skin adjusts because it is a very nourishing product.
This retails for about 10,000JPY excluding tax for a 100ml bottle. Equivalent to under 100USD which is very reasonable for the large size and considering you need very little, it will go a long way. There are often GWP promotions in Japanese or HK counters, mine also came with travel size lotion and cream. It was a good way to try the cream out as well.
If you are based in the US or any other non Asian country, it is possible to buy online, either from Ebay, or various Japanese cosmetics websites.
Also, interestingly, there are several similar moisture lotion type products on the Japanese market. I believe Moisture Skin Repair is the original, while others are clearly generics, but there are more high end releases too.
FYI - other alternatives to Moisture Skin Repair, which also receive good ratings (average of 5+) on Cosme.net - the Japanese Makeupalley!
1. beaute de kose Moisture Engage (very similar product)
2. Kose Moisture Essence (available in fragrance free)
3. Rice Force moisture lotion/essence (also uses Rice Extract No. 11, and similarly priced)
4. Kose Cosme Decorte Liposome lotion (texture is thicker and is based on liposome technology) |

I have the eye cream from this line (also contains the No. 11 extract) and I am loving it. It just really does its job.. hydrates, no new lines (perhaps mine have even softened a bit) and no greasiness or milia appearing. Lovely.
The other items in this line were on my list of "to try", so guess they will be stayig there!
Mine is the sample pot (an ample 5ml) which I received when purchasing the Kose Asalution range (containing Astaxanthink from crustaceans.. and yes, it is bright ORANGE)... |
