Like most of you I am diligent with the use of SS on my face. I feel good knowing I'm doing what I can to prevent aging and other sun damage. I also use on my hands, neck and bust area (if exposed.!)
We all have different skin issues - dry, oily, rosacea, acne and the use of yet another lotion, cream just adds to the heaviness on our face and reactions with products, etc.

I am interested and have been interested in looking at other options to putting a cream or lotion on the face. For me - my skin is oily and I don't like putting that heavy layer on but I do it. The potential for irritation, pore-clogging and overall greasy feel increases with this. Sometimes I forget the SS - after putting on all the other stuff. (Enough already) and then I feel guilty because - dang, I forgot my SS.

My research lately is in finding the ultimate MMU - not that I want the coverage - I want the sun protection. Plus, some research is not so crazy over SS usage (Isn't that special)- I won't go into that right now as it is obviously controversial and I do want to protect the skin on my face.

I have never been a big foundation person and I've shyed away from MMU too, but I am thinking a light layer of MMU might be the way to go - a little evening out of skin tone, the bonus of UVA/UVB without the cream layer. For me it would hopefully minimize oil - at least the right formulation and could be easily applied in a light manner throughout the day with all the other nice benefits.

I would like to know your thoughts on this subject.

We've all heard that SS is a wonderful - if not the best anti-aging tool and I would like to look at it in a Holistic manner - that is incorporating into the other skin care that comes before and how we can all best benefit from our SS.

Thanks,
Sis

hi sister sweets,

i seem to tailor my methods according to the uv index these days (available on weather.com). I think some of the best protection can be had by following up a broad spectrum ss with an application of MMU. After trying several brands, Amazing foundation works brilliantly for me. It looks flawless (coverage is minimal, though), translucent, and never settles in lines or looks cakey. I love it.
Currently, I love NIA24's mineral ss and Amazing base, applied with Jane Iredale's MMU mini brush.
Chemical ss and MMU are generally incompatible, so the mineral sunscreen plus MMU works well.
If I'm going to be spending a full day at the beach, I'd opt for a chemical SS, such as Avene or bioderma. They protect more against UVA rays--the most damaging. But you cannot layer with MMU.

For me, the Amazing product does exactly what you want it to:
"a light layer of MMU might be the way to go - a little evening out of skin tone, the bonus of UVA/UVB without the cream layer."
And the NIA sunscreen, while tenacious to the skin, goes on very lightly and thinly, and leaves the skin satiny soft. It seems to be the perfect canvas for MMU.

I hope that helps!

With minerals, you need to apply a heavy enough layer to block the UV and remember to reapply but if you find the right one it can lessn the breakouts compared to sunscreen and hopefully look natural too. I haven't used it on my face since I switched to minerals several years back. I have less cystic breakouts though I think we have to expect some if we keep using beauty products on our face. Its just how much is really acceptable to you?

I got sick of the greasy feeling on my face and the TD emphasizing any flakes so I stick with my minerals for the summer.

Jane Iredale has a translucent 30 SPF powder that is not a foundation but just a mineral powder sunscreen. Check it out. It won't look like your wearing makeup even with a heavy coating.

Hi Avalange, I was really interested to read that chemical ss and mineral makeup are generally incompatible - actually I was dismayed because I thought I was doing the right thing (having read previous threads here a few years ago)! I've been using Avene ss which I think contains Tinosorb (not sure) and I use Bare Escentuals Mineral Veil over the top. Could you tell me if this is OK or not? If not, I'd really appreciate some recommendations (I live in the UK). Thanks very much.

Didi, only Avobenzone degrades when combined with MMU. Other chemicals are ok as far as I'm aware. Others pls correct me if I'm wrong. Smile

Thanks Avalange -
Interesting - tailoring to the UV index - definitely checking this out. And the NIA too! I have some samples to try.

Did not know that chemical SS and MMU were somewhat ineffective if used together. That is certainly worthwhile information.

I assume that the Amazing is a MMU product. I just received samples of a MMU line called Avanya and got a nice color match. It is suppposed to be 20 spf and help both UVA/UVB - designed by a physician. I also have samples of UGLO GIRL coming.
