I just read this article on MSN, brrrr!!!
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24190829
Since I pretty much can't go a day without my lip gloss, I figure what I really need to do is find the best SPF chapstick I can to go under it. So, ladies, please tell me your favorites! I'd prefer a physical sunscreen, but in a pinch I'll take whatever. Right now I'm using Bare Escentuals Soy Mocha SPF 15 balm. I love it because the texture is gorgeous (very moisturizing), and I love the chocolate fragrance, however, the SPF is chemical-based, so I'm still looking for better options. TIA, ladies! |

I'm on the look out for a lip product with SPF too!
So far I've only come across those with an SPF 8, 10 or 15. The only lip treatment I found with an SPF 36 is by Shiseido, but it leaves an ugly white cast when I put it on...almost like I'm sick!
Right now I'm down to just a few I'm considering...
No color:
Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment Spf 15
Smashbox Lip Treatment Spf 15
DDF Glossy Lip Treatment Spf 15
B Kamins Bio-Maple Lip Balm Spf 20
With color:
Fresh Sugar Lip Gloss Spf 15
Benefit Benetint Lip Balm Spf 15
There are a lot of other brands of lipstick with spf if you do a search on "lip & spf" on Sephora. None of the ones I listed are purely physical, the Shiseido might be, but I couldn't use it because of the white tint, if you're using it under another gloss then I guess it's okay? |

I wonder if you prime your lips with MMU, that would help? |

I had no idea that lip gloss has to be SPF, but now that I think about it, it makes sense. Lip skin is just as sensitive to sun light as any other are of skin. I will be on the lookout for lip gloss with sun protection. |

I just heard about this on the news a minute ago. They said that lip glosses actually attract sunlight rather than repel it, so definitely protect your lips by wearing sun protection underneath your gloss.
I've always used Kiehl's Lip Balm SPF 15 under my lipstick or gloss. It's active ingredients are: Octinoxate 7.5%, Oxybenzone 3%, Petrolatum 66.1%. Don't know of any lip balm that has physical sunscreen in it, wonder if any ladies here have other suggestions... |

This info has been around for a while. Things like vaseline are not suggested for use on the lips during the day because they augment the sun's rays and offer no SPF protection. |

I'm never out in the sun anyways. But what if you don't wear anything on your lips? I never thought about putting sunblock on my lips, only on my skin. I usually don't put anything but pure oil on my lips for moisture. I guess I'll start adding my MMU powder to my lips. |

I wonder if lipstick rather than lipbalm would help. Might the particles of pigment act like a physical sunscreen, blocking the UV rays? Does anybody know? |

I am looking for a good SPF lip balm. Maybe organic lip balm has less harm. |

Liz, have you given up on L2K? I have mentioned to Kandis about adding spf to her products, and got no response. Think I will bring it up again!! |

It is really depend on what chemicals did they use.
My advice is use as little makeup as possible. All colour makeup is not good for your skin. |

Unfortunately, I had to give L2K the old heave ho. Poor Kandis tried every routine under the sun to try to help my lips adjust, but in the end nothing really worked. While I was on L2K I pretty much peeled for 8 months straight, ouch! Kandis and I finally decided that my lips are too sensitive and were overwhelmed by the actives in the L2K products. Since then I've been using Osea's Eyes + Lips on my lips morning and night, and whatever gloss or balm I feel like during the day, and my lips have never looked better, not to mention they pretty much stopped peeling and chapping--- needless to say that the Osea product quickly reached the top of my HG list! |

Disagree completely. Many color makeup lines are actually good for your skin, and protect it from the sun and other environmental factors, as well as balancing oil production, moisturizing, and providing actives. |

are yu sure its lip gloss and not the color stay lipsticks. I was told that some bright color lipsticks may contain too much lead and therefore can be cancerous. |

I'll second sfong. i've also heard that it is the 'chemicals' or rather the traces of some metal particles in colored lipsticks that have been linked to cancer.
I don't have a source for this but if I can remember it was discussed on the vogue forum.. |

I recently discovered La Roche-Posay Antherpos lip sunscreen (spf 50). Works really well under lipstick. My favorite weekend gloss is Neutrogena MoistureShine Lip Soother (spf 20). |
