I have some African black soap and I would like to turn it into liquid soap to use as shower gel. Do I just mix the soap with water? Do I need to add anything to preserve it? I have some unrefined shea butter I would like to put in it as well to add moisture. I assume I just melt it and pour it in? Has anyone done this before?

If you are going to make a nice size batch of this gel then you will have to use a preservative, bacteria will grow like crazy. But if you can use it up in a week i wouldn't worry about it. I am not sure about how to add in the shea butter but my guess would be like this. After the black soap totally liquefies in the water, add in the melted shea butter and shake it like crazy for like a minute straight. I hope that works, let me know!

I make my own laundry soap with my extra soaps I have, my homemade soaps, and I've never had a problem with bacteria. My suggestion would be to take the soap, but it in a large double boiler, S-S, not cast iron, add about 2 cups of water and cook it over a simmering pot. Actually to make it go quicker grate up the soap. You'll probably have to add a few more cups to get the consistancy you want. Then let it cool down, and if it's not liquid enough for you add more water and take a stick blender to it.

Don't know how to make it into liquid but in the future you might check out Shea Moisture's line as they carry an organic black soap body wash. I found their products at Target! www.sheamoisture.com
