Hey Guys,
A while ago we mentioned about it and at the time I was hesitant to give it a try as I thought it would be a bit unsafe, but I finally took the plunge and thought I would share the eyelash perming experience I had recently with you.. I was getting a pedicure and manicure at a nail salon in Sydney when I noticed that the nail tech had gorgeous, perfectly curled eye lashes and asked if she had had them permed. "We do it here!" she said so back I sat on my chair...
I had my eyes closed the whole time.. a setting solution was applied to the lashes and then some glue before tiny flexible rollers were put in place and lashes set into the rollers.. then came the perming solution which I recognised straight away due to the strong smell. I don't know how many rollers they would have used on each eye, maybe one or two. I kept my eyes closed the whole time as I said, for fear of getting solution in my eye but none went in. After about 35 mins the micro rollers were removed, cotton pad applicators to wipe away the excess glue, and W AH and behold I had eye-popping, curled natural lashes !!
Later at home I found a few lashes hadn't been woven onto the roller so they have been permed sitting flat across the lash line, and some lashes looked like they had been permed into a kink like spider legs , so perhaps next time I will keep my eyes open and eyebrows raised so the tech can get to all the lashes. Overall though, I loved them !!
The perm is suppose to last up to 2-3 months, so it's good for someone like me who has thin dead-straight, downward-growing eyelashes... it means less time with a curler and for the time-challenged, just add mascara !!
I went in with no make-up so they didn't have to fuss around getting my eye make-up off, plus it's probably best to start with eyes free of greasy cleansers. Apparently you can have the tinting and perming done together-- I have black hair already so no tinting for me. You can purchase eyelash perming kits but I doubt I would try this at home, better to leave it to the pros and you can have a bit of a snooze while you wait !!
I really recommend eyelash perming, it's relaxing, pain-free (for contact lens wearers), a great investment (time) and whether you wear mascara or have them natural your lashes are permanantly curled for that open doe-eyed look we all love ! |

isn't that something??!! only 10-15 minutes and you get cute curly eyelashes that not only lift and brighten up your eyes but also make them sparkle i know at least mine do
i had it done several times already... just make sure that the person who's doing it for you is experienced enough that she doesn't over/under-perm your lashes... cuz it'll look sorta weird... and make sure you take off contact lenses beforehand, because sometimes i forget
glad that you're enjoying it... u may get hooked, heehee |

Hey there Moshimoshi,
I'm already hooked ! A friend of mine thought that I had spent some time with the curler but I hadn't. She's now wanting to get it done but says her lashes are super short. Although I know the tiny rollers they use are in various sizes even short-lashed people can get it done, but she says she's going to go for eyelash extensions !!
The tech didn't ask me to take off my contacts before I got it done nothing went wrong though... I do agree that you might be able to over-perm because for me it took about 35 mins so might be a bit too long ?
I've seen Japanese girls with super-curled lashes and now I know how to get it ! Glad I did it, can't wait to try the other place in a few months. |

Thanks for posting that Summertimegirl! I've toyed with the idea of having it done but was never game enough to do it. I'm sick and tired of having to curl my lashes though, and I do have to because otherwise I seem to look tired (well that's what I think anyway).
You've convinced me to get this done! I'm going to book in to get it done next week. The place that I want to go to also does lash exntensions... Anyone had that done before? It only costs Au$25 to get it done. Not sure about the perm by itself, they have a perm + tint combo for Au$55. How much did you pay if you don't mind me asking? |

Yeah for summertimegirl
that eyelash perm sounds divine, but i wonder what side effects it would have in the future if you keep having them done often. That perming soultion sounds scary to me.
I'd say an eye liner is as far as I go, i wish i was brave like u gals to go for that. Anyways, it's a good thing i hope. |

Moshimoshi, why do you need to use mascara daily to keep the curl longer or to make it look more natural? Could you explain please? I'm not big on daily mascara use and I wonder if the perm is more for people who DO use mascara... TIA |

mabsy, sorry i don't have an answer to that that's just something one of my esthesticians once advised me... but i personally don't use mascara much anyway because of terrible irritation i get from it... so i didn't pay much attention to that... sorry... |

Hi Mabsy,
I'm still having to use the curler to correct the lashes that didn't get permed, as it was a rushed appointment (I slotted it in with my mani and pedi), so I'm looking forward to the next appointment at the salon my friend recommended where they can take their time to perfect the curl I don't know if I would go for extensions, but I'm going to ask what's involved, how long it lasts and check if it looks natural !
I'll get back to you with how much the perm cost me, I think the Japanese nail salon that did it was the cheapest, at another salon I go to for facials their eyelash perm was $65 for 45 mins.
I love wearing mascara daily (just as much as I love taking it off with the Phytomer Rose Face Dew ! ) except on my days off around the house.. but I like it that the perm makes me look awake and not as tired as it really opens up the eye even with no mascara. The mascara just helps make the effect bigger but I'm not sure if it would help the perm last longer. Good luck and have fun when you go get it done !! |

Mabsy,
Just to get back to you re cost of the eyelash perm, $38 for 45 min perm...that's the cheapest in Sydney ! I think 45 mins is the standard time.
...I'm still catching up on all the posts and just read up the horror story Carecate had with her eyelash perming experience on the Lamas Lash Masque post... "weird pubic hairs" was how she described how one eye turned out. I think in the wrong hands anything can happen, but if anyone is looking to get this done, I really recommend it as the results look great. |

I'm officially starting to get cold feet about this idea now.....
I like the sound of it when it turns out properly, but I would hate to still have to use the curler after getting this done (seeing as I'm sure it does SOME damage to the lashes - being a perm and all...). |

Hmmm... I wonder too about the damage to the lashes with the perming solution, but unlike a perm there's no heat involved... however, I don't want them to dry up and split if that's the price I'm going to pay later. I wonder how many times Moshimoshi has had it done, or if anyone who gets the eyelash perm regularly can comment about the long term ?? Thnx !

thought my name was mentioned somewhere
well, i permed my eyelashes once in a while... i would say about 4 times in 5 years?!?! but i always had it done when i went back to asia... i've never experienced it in the states or elsewhere...
i was lucky to find this facialist who's very meticulous and knowledgeable, taking care of her customer's skin/body like her own... i personally don't like to be rushed, so i usually make the eyelash-perming appt by itself (it also would not give the facialist any reason to rush and do a lousy job ...)... the total time she spend on perming and conditioning my eyelashes was about 25 minutes and it costed about $15-20USD... she once mentioned that any perm more than 30 minutes is overdoing it - but i'm assuming this applies to asians who most have thin and not very full eyelashes, and maybe the lashes/hair's texture has to do with it, too??!!
also the solution used is very important... just like hair-perming, there are good one and bad one... i had one done that was terrible before - the solution was harsh and it's stinging and caused rashes on my sensitive eye areas; plus the girl who did a bad job wasn't very experienced in the first place and my lashes looked kinked afterward but the lady that i'm sticking with now is very picky with the solution because she uses it herself... she also special ordered the roller which she guaranteed is the most lashes-friendly one that she'd ever used... she also did special care regime for the eye afterward (for another 10-15 minutes)... it has been more of a pampering experience for me than a just-perming one...
all in all, i noticed that my eyelashes grew longer eversince i started perming them... and they've looked healthy as they've always been... so i can't tell you how important it is to find an experienced facialist to do it for ya |

Thanks Moshimoshi. I really do like the salon that I get my brows waxed at. It has won some awards etc etc But I still don't really 100% trust them with my lashes. I'll have to ask around for some recommendations. I would say that the solution, its concentration and how long it was left on for could definitely affect the outcome (in a bad way!). |

Ok, I MUST get this done! Now how do I find a salon that does it? Do I look in the phone book (already going to go get phone book). It takes me longer to do my eyelashes then to put on the rest of my makeup. I have the hardest time getting my eyelashes to curl. I heat my eyelash curler, even put some gel on my lashes and still they won't stay curled, big hassel to say the least. |

Yes, I found a spa that does it and made an appointment for next week! I am so thrilled I must do a little dance. |

be sure to ask them about the solution and its quality they used, the type of rollers they put on... and how many have they done?... even better if they have someone who works in the spa and had their lashes permed there can show you their results physically....
good luck!! let us know how it turns out!!! |

The receptionist said it will take about an hour and the cost 65.00 . If it works I don't care how much it cost. I will call before my appointment and ask all the important questions. I can't imagine how it is done, do they use really tiny curlers? The solution can't be the same as you would use on your head, right? I don't want to have pubic eyelashes . |

Well, I've been doing this for a few years, and not all perms "take". It's trial and error to find someone who is adept. I guess that can be said about anything...And from my experience, price and the amount of time the person has been doing it is not an indicator of talent with the perm rods. I think it's a talent some people have and some people don't. A lot of people have trouble getting the lashes to adhere to the rod and that can make for less than desirable results... I know the idea of perm solution near the eye is freaky, but I've never gotten it in my eyes. And no ill results long term from the perm solution to the "quality" of my lashes, and as I said, I've been doing it for years. I love the effect, and I get my lashes permed, and then dyed and its amazing! If you dye your lashes, be sure to do it after perming as the perm solution strips off the dye. Anyone out there from Los Angeles let me know and I can give a couple of referrals to places that do a good job.

I'm so torn! I don't know if I should get this done or not. The risk scares me but the potential for care-free lashes is really tempting! |

Go for it Mabsy!!!! Just ask all those questions first that Mishimo mentioned, i.e. how many have they done, has anyone incurred an accident with it... |

I think that' a good tip Moshimoshi, making the appointment on its own so that there's no overlap with other treatments. It's a good idea to ask about the quality of the perming solution as well before going into the salon. I think a really knowledgeable facialist would be able to tell you what they use as well as any risks involved, if any.
Well my perm's curl is starting to fall out now. My lashes are not that thick but they are very stubbornly straight so the perm held quite well for a good month and a half ! Actorella, I'm glad to hear that over time there's no change in the health of your lashes, I hope mine are still dark and glossy after the next few appointments ! I plan to keep this up.
Vegas gal, to answer your question, yes the rollers they use are tiny, flexible rollers that are small enough to wound your lashes around. I think the duration of the perm should depend on the thickness of your lashes though. To me the whole experience was pleasant and I am looking forward to my next one. Goodluck with yours, do tell us how it goes and what you think of your newlook lashes !! I compare the number of lashes I lost in the crimping process of using curlers to getting them permed and I lose more curling them manually. So the perming wins hands down, I just need to find a good facialist as the one Moshimoshi has then I'm set for life. |
