Ok...I don't know if this is the right board to post this question...but I recently bought a very powerful blender; It blends anything and "dissolves" all the fiber so I don't need to throw the fiber away...less cleaning too which reduces my stress level
Anyway, I think good skin starts from the inside (although, I spend a fortune on what i put outside ). Are there any vegetables out there that will improve my skin and are good for anti-aging? I have been blending 4 cups of spinach everyday with my strawberry- cantaloupe-banana-yogurt smoothie and I would like to venture to other vegetables...Your recommendations are welcome...or should I be posting in a cooking forum TIA |

You can never go wrong with the following;
- apple
- carrot
- honey
- avocado
- blueberries
- rasberries
- any citrus
- pomegranate (pure juice will do, but nothing beats squeezing the juice out of the piece of fruit through a cheesecloth)
(I'll hit the report button, to see if the mods would rather put this in the "Lounge".. Maybe not though, since it is great for the skin both in and out.. ) |

If you have a juicer... they do an amazing job on pomegranates. I have a pom tree... and was just starring at the blossoms today... hope to get a ton!!!
I tend to sweeten up my greens like you! You could switch out Kale for spinach.
Also, sound like you might have a vita-mix. I like fruit smoothies best.
And I LOVE to make soup in my vita-mix.
(summer is an awesome time for chilled soups... gazpacho anyone?)
You can basically do the following with any veg you like...
My fave is broccoli.
Steam a bag of frozen (preferably organic) broccoli. Transfer to blender. Use some of the broccoli water. Blend until you get desired consistency. If you need more fluid, continue to use the broccoli water, or add chicken or veg. stock.
If you don't have an aversion to dairy. Transfer back to a pot, add a splash of milk, and little bit of grated cheese. A little goes a LONG way.
Salt and pepper to taste.
Ok... and my latest favorite thing to make in my blender is Mushroom gravy (pretty much the way you make soup) Allow it to remain thicker than soup for gravy. Serve over mashed potato, parsnip and cauliflower.
I'm growing corn this year... maybe I'll make a soup out of that! |

What is a good blender for veggie smoothies? I'd like to get into that this summer with a farmer's market right down the road... And friends and family with gardens.
I hear the Jack LaLane is a good juicer but difficult to clean????
Also - beets in a smoothie are yummie - of course you need to temper them with fruits to add sweetness. I know agave is good and stevia is a suggestion for other natural sweetening. |

Hey sister... I have the Jack LaLane (from costco). It's SUPER easy to clean! Literally takes no more than 5 minutes. You just take it apart, rinse, put it back together. It's really a snap! (oh, and if you've got the right mix, use the fiber for a soup stock! Or compost it...I'm still looking into a composter!)
I've been making Beet juice too... 1/2 lemon, 1-2 beets, and a junk of ginger! (ginger is a great anti inflamitory)
I have a Vita Mix... it's AWESOME. But spendy. Helps being married to a professional chef (discounts!) There is another that someone on our board recommends. He uses it ALL the time. I'll find out. The main thing is that you have a great motor!
Oh... and I'll share my all time FAVORITE refreshing summer drink. My kids LOVE it too.
Frozen strawberries, 1 peeled lime, Blend with a little water.
Fill the bottom of a glass with this mixture, and pour sparkling water over the top. So refreshing. Better than soda! |

The other recommended blender (I've never used) was a Blendtec. |

This is from Kimberly Snyders blog (Envision Beauty).
"It takes only a few minutes to prepare this amazing green smoothie:
* 1 1/2 cup of water
* 1 head of organic romaine lettuce, chopped
* 3-4 stalks of organic celery
* 2 organic apples, cored and chopped
* 1 organic banana
* 1/3 bunch of organic cilantro
* 1/3 bunch of organic parsley
* Juice of ½ fresh organic lemon
Add the water and chopped head of romaine to the blender. Starting the blender on a low speed, mix until smooth. Gradually moving to higher speeds add the herbs celery and apples. Add the banana and lemon juice last." |

Thanks Claudia! When I lived out west (Seattle) I went to Costco all the time (sigh)....
I'll try the beet recipe (love using lemons too) and the other.
And Riley girl - that sounds like a kick-a$$ smoothie. I'm all over it! |

Let me know if you try it. I only have a regular blender, and don't think that will work. I have been doing a fruit/spinach smoothie every day and that works good in the blender. I need a fancier machine! |

I have Blentec Total Blender. I got it from Costco for $379...and it is AWESOME! Everything is grinded... even Cantaloupe, I just brush the skin using a toothbrush to make sure it is clean and everything goes into the blender: seeds and skin. Also very easy to clean. I also use Stevia for sweetening (recommended by Dr Perricone and Jillian Michaels); no aftertaste and zero calories.
Beets m? I should give that a try. Thx! |

This morning I tried the 4 cups spinach-celery-romaine with 1 apple, 1/2 banana, carrot, 1/4 avocado, lemon, & whey protein powder & stevia...all organic! I could taste the celery a bit so maybe tomorrow I will reduce the celery....but i feel healthy and green |

Try adding parsley for extra green also...I have a blendtec and love it as well.
If the taste of celery is not appealing add more banana, and/or apple and/or ginger.
Never thought of adding canteloupe with skin and seeds:-) Sounds interesting... |

Same here... I've been lusting for a vita mix for over a year now! I just bought a very inexpensive Oster blender at Wal Mart because I figured it was better than nothing, but now I'm wondering if I made a mistake
I'm going to have to try your fruit/spinach smoothie! |

I am going to Sam's over the weekend, and will see if I can find anything fancy there!
The fruit/spinach is really good. I use 2 huge handfuls of spinach, 1 banana, 1/2 cup of raspberries or strawberries, 1 scoop of BNS Dessert Protein (which really makes it good!), and water. You can use whatever berries you like. I am using the strawberries or raspberries as I am undergoing a 4 week experiment. I read that strawberries (due to the ellagic acid) eaten daily can reduce freckles by up to 50%. We'll see! |

pineapple covers the taste of many things.
However, if you're on any heart meds... reconsider pineapple. I understand it can cause some serious issues. |

How about v8? I just ordered a lot of the low sodium v8 cans from amazon.
I *definitely* don't make a smoothie every day, so I think v8 will be a good addition... |

::Smacking forehead, V8 style::
Great idea, especially since getting certain levels of lycopene over time (12 weeks, IIRC)can increase your skin's natural resistance to UV rays. Can't remember how much lycopene was needed, but I think 8 oz of V8 covers it. |

thanks for the tip. I added ginger to last night's smoothie and it definitely masked the taste of the celery. This morning in additon to ginger, I also added mint and it is wonderful!!.
I think I am officially a green smoothie addict. |

I just bought a Blendtec (with limited return options) so I hope this is true!
Does anyone have any recommendations for veggie washes? They sell a few at the grocery store but I usually just rinse them with filtered water. But since I'll be eating a lot more produce when the Blendtec arrives maybe I should buy something more potent..?
Do you guys use the veggie washes, or do anything in particular besides just rinsing with water?
(By the way, essq2w3e4r, I love the idea of scrubbing the cantaloupe skin with a soft toothbrush -- I'll definitely be borrowing that idea ) |

Is there any health benefit to adding cantaloupe skin and seeds to a smoothie, or is it purely for convenience? Just wondering... Thanks! |
