As most of you know, I am a blonde. I've been blonde since childhood, and my hair deepened to a medium blonde during puberty. Regardless, I am fair, and thank-God for highlights!
For the past five years, I've waxed my upper-lip. The fine hair on my upper-lip deepened in tone during my late teens! (no birth-control pill. Nothing!) In fact, when I look-at my photos taken in October, 1992, I can still SEE a slight shadow above my lip! Horror of horrors! It was probably due to the poor lighting & cheap-ola photography standards of the photographer whom toured the schools, but I'm paranoid!
I used-to try home-waxing strips: the ones with wax, adhesded-to plastic. These barely removed anything; possibly due-to my fear. Waste of money.
When I started working-for EDS (over) four years-ago, I had my first professional upper-lip wax. Now, I am addicted! I wax my own upper-lip, every two weeks (or so). I hate to feel any fuzz there, and I prefer to do the deed myself - merely taking 5 minutes at work to do-so. I've NEVER made a mistake, even though I am not an esthetician.
Bad idea: I bought a home waxing kit from the drugstore two months ago. Manufacturer: Parissa. Canadian & locally-owned. Tried it a few times, cleaning-up my bikini-line. It was okay, but I bruised myself both times! 
Upper lip: I've been busy at work, as have our estheticians, and it seems that when I've thought to wax my upper-lip, each room has been busy. Remember: I prefer to do it myself.
BAD idea: using the home-waxing kit, to wax the blonde peach-fuzz that I'd sprouted! I knew how to wax, necessary steps, etc. Wax was at perfect temperature. I am not an idiot, nor inexperienced.
FIRE along my upper lip! The following morning: I woke with HUGE, red marks above my mouth, nearly reaching my nostrils. Not only had I removed the hair, but I'd also removed a layer or two of skin! It was raw, painful, and required some ... Amazing Concealer!
OUCH!
I looked like I'd been ... free-basing cocaine at first, later developing eczema above my mouth. "Mortified" was an understatment!
The wax: too sticky! Had I heated it for longer in the microwave, it's consistancy would have been too thin, and I'd have SCALDED my mouth!
I threw-away the entire kit, two days ago. I have been promised a full reimbursement (by cheque), from the owner of the company.
I should have sent him a photo of my nasal/oral area, so that he could have seen my "free-basing" appearance!

That sounds horrific. I don't know what else to say. Lots of vit E topically, water and direction from the best at EDS? Holy *hit! Be really careful for infection too....
I have learned over the years, it pays to have professionals do some things but that decision has always come at the painful price of error.

OMG What a horror!! I feel so bad for you, but I must admit your post made me giggle a little - not the experience, but your description. "Free basing cocaine" LOL Too funny.  I know I've tried Parissa wax as well to wax legs and bikini area and I threw it out as well. Really sticky, hard to work with and totally ineffective. Now I prefer to just shave my legs, epil my thigh area because I'm not that hairy to begin with and either shave or epil my bikini line. All depends on how much pain I want to endure that day because epiling the bikini line is pure torture. |

I use a kit that I purchase from the Bliss catalogue called Poetic...
It really is excellent. But, I still don't have the guts to do my own Brazilian... For that, I hit the spa (but only after knocking back a few margaritas  ). |

I just starting doing my own brazilian a few months back, guess shelling out the $65 bucks a month wasn't really worth it to me when I could get a home-kit for like 5 bucks and get 2 sessions out of it.
I actually do a better job than she did . I won't lie, it hurts, but I have this cream that supposedly numbs the area, you put it on 45 min prior to the waxing and take a few aspirins and it sometimes helps.
Boy it gets messy though let me tell ya. |

I've actually had good results with Parissa wax. (I've used both the pre-applied plastic strips and the kind you heat in the jar.) However, I use them only on my bikini area. Also, freak of nature that I am, I don't really find waxing in general to be especially painful.
Anyway, thanks for the cautionary post. I've occasionally been tempted to use the pre-waxed strips on my face--the convenience is appealing--but now I won't attempt that! |

That's the one I use to wax my brows and 'stache, too. I also just got one from Sally Hansen that I really like, although it’s wax is softer and more pliable than the hard wax in the Poetic kit, here’s a link to it: http://www.ulta.com/control/product/~product_id=2109750 – I got it at my local Ulta store. Lately, I’ve been using the SH kit more often than the Poetic kit because you can nuke the SH wax in the microwave as it comes in a little plastic jar. I’ve had my Poetic kit for years and it has a tin mug that you have to heat on the stove, which is more of a hassle.
I once did the same thing to my eyebrows that Kate did to her lip, but I was using that God-awful "Nads" stuff -- it took nearly two months for the area to completely heal! Here's hoping that Kate's lip recovers more speedily. You might think about applying a bit of lavender oil (neat or mixed with Vit-E oil to help prevent scarring) to it every evening to speed the healing...Good luck! |

Caspersmum, so sorry to hear about this!! I wish you a speedy recovery.
One question though. If you've been waxing that area forever, why is hair STILL coming thru? My experience has been (I use the sugaring method) that after 2 or 3 times, hair is so sparse, there is no more need to use ANY form of hair removal. And with you being so fair, whats a bit of fuzz? Its a bit late now, but I'm afraid you've damaged any support structure left in your skin. |

OMG I can't believe you do your own brazilian (SCREAMINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG...  ) Last year, in a moment of sheer insanity, I decided I'd try a quasi self waxing but enlisting the help of my bf. He thought it was all sexy until he pulled off the first strip and I screamed - it was clearly NOT a scream driven by overwhelming pleasure !!! Back to the spa for katee.... |

I can imagine how painful that was.......i wax my upper lip once in a while.....and have had bruises loads of times........so now i thread my upper lip..........maybe my skin is too sensitive

| The BRAZILIAN...OMG! Never again! I had the exact same experience as katee...now hubby insists I use a cream or as he suggests...nothing! He just can't imagine why we do this to ourselves (as if he didn't like it too ). Not bad for a couple in their 50's! |

wow! you're so lucky.
i found that happened with my legs to a certain extent (i notice less growth, and finer)
but particularly in the bikini area i found it to increase hair growth, yes. really.
i've had it done, and done it myself :twitch:: and i know i was getting the root, because i always look
now i'm off of the bikini waxing, and i'm saving up for some lazer treatments, i don't want it gone, just um, diminished. |

It's so nice to have a place to commiserate as well as get great advice.
I've posted before about my search for a good home wax kit, and thanks to recommendations I've been pretty happy with the Surgiwax hard wax--it's just so time consuming!
So I was at the store and saw that surgiwax makes these honey wax strips and decided to give it a go b/c I've liked all their other products.

The strips are excellent!!! They did a great job (granted, my leg hair was pretty long), and since I've been waxing a while it really didn't even hurt that much.
Emboldened, I decided to give my bikini line a go....
This too was actually going very well, and I got a little overzealous, since I was SUCH A GOOD WAXER NOW (at least, that's what my brain was telling me... though it might have been the 2 beers I had at dinner) and got a little more ambitious with the amount of hair I was going to remove.
I somehow, inadvertantly, got the edge of the strip on a portion that, um, shall we say--doesn't have much hair, and skin tore.
Sorry to be graphic. It hurt and bled a lot and has taken nearly a week to heal. So--the lesson might be a) don't try to wax your own bikini line, b) don't drink beer before waxing (though it probably helped w/ the pain), c) go to a professional if you're getting anywhere near the more delicate bits.
I don't think it's put me off home-waxing, but it was a very abrupt lesson in the necessity of precision. |

I did that to myself once too, except it was eyebrow waxing. Both painful and hideous, but no long term problems. I used Neosporin to treat it. That's my answer to all open, bleeding wounds.
Ariesxtreme, I do my own Brazilian because I can't deal with having someone else do it. I've never had a really bad experience with it other than the general "ouch" factor. I like the softer SH wax that Carekate was talking about. It really doesn't hurt as much, and it's easier to work with. -Plus, it smells nice. |

I used a home wax kit for my legs and I got ingrown infected hairs and scars that took over a year to start to fade. I'm sticking with the pro's for the next time I feel reckless  |

| Good to see I am not the only one out there with waxing horror stories. I've tried at home waxing many times and each has ended with one strip pulled with only a few hairs on it and enough pain for me to leave the kit in the bathroom cabinet for months. Well, I've decided to give it a go once more and purchased the Parissa wax strips to try. Stay tuned.... Wish me luck. |

I've done my own Brazilian, and it takes too much time!
Parissa Wax: sent me an e-mail a few weeks ago, saying that they would refund my money. Nothing received, but yesterday I received a call (at work) from a rep. The cheque had been returned, incorrectly addressed. Money shall be refunded this coming week.
I was told that "each product is very different", even for those whom have experience in waxing. Ok. I believe the woman that I spoke-to, but ... having taken extra precautions (baby powder, tempurature, ect.) ... I shouldn't have been ripping the skin off of my upper lip.
Vit. E oil did the trick, within four days, I might add. |

Sorry to hear of your bad experience.
I use Veet Warm wax. Wax the whole lot on my own. Making appointments and keeping them are just too hard! Let alone the cost.
Veet is a sugar based wax. I microwave it for 15-45 seconds depending on the amount of wax left in the jar. It comes with 10 cotton strips which I wash and reuse.
It works great, esp when they are new. Once it's below half way down, I throw it out.
The great thing about it is that it works and because it's sugar based, it washes off! |

Do you know if we gave the terrorists bikini waxes, it would be cruel and inhumane punishment.
I tried an at home leg wax once. Never again!
I also discovered the hard way that those using retin a should not wax those areas, the skin leaves along with the hair. |

| I can't use wax on my skin because I am afraid of ripping my skin off because of the various serums I use. I just shave my face once a week. The hair is blonde so no worries about five o'clock shadow. Cheap, too. However, don't use any acids on your face afterwards on that day. |
