Daniel K. Hall-Flavin, M.D.
Several herbal remedies have been studied as a treatment for anxiety, including kava, passion flower, valerian and theanine.

The most popular herbal treatment for anxiety is kava. Numerous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of kava in reducing anxiety, with effects observed after as few as one to two doses. However, there is concern that kava may be harmful to the liver.

Multiple cases of liver damage — including hepatitis, cirrhosis and liver failure — associated with kava use have been reported in Europe. As a result, several countries have banned the sale of kava due to safety concerns. The Food and Drug Administration has issued warnings about kava but hasn't banned the sale of kava in the United States.

Some evidence suggests that passion flower, valerian and theanine also may reduce anxiety and are generally considered to be safe herbs, with few reported adverse side effects. However, more research is needed to fully evaluate the effectiveness and safety of these herbal supplements for such use.

If you are considering a trial of a dietary or herbal supplement as a treatment for mild anxiety, talk to your doctor first. Also, if your anxiety is interfering with daily activities, consider working with a mental health specialist as well

probably best to tke a look at your lifestyle as a whole to see what is causing the anxiety, physical, emotional, spiritual. (actually accordig to may systems of healing which include herbology as a main component...the emotional, spiritual aspects of a 'dis-ese' also come into playwhen prescribing herbs...since the same herbs will not necessary heal what outwardly, symptomatically apears to be the 'same' manifestation in different people...so any true herbal healer..be it from a TCM, Vitalist, or Ayuvedic tradition, for example, will take the whole personinto account)

meanwhile, if you choose not to see a professional herbalist (or other healer), milky oat tops are a good herbal choice for anxiety..they are mild tasting, relax nervous tension and are full of minerals, like calcium and magnesium, which you may be lacking if you are always anxious (check into sources of b vitamins also)...and are totaly withoutside effects (unless you are gluten intolerant..some wo are gluten intolerant can take milky oat tops herb..some not)

you can order from ountainrose herbs online if in the USA...take one cup in mason or ball jar...pour in 4 cups of boiling water..close the lid tight..steep fro 4-8 hours and drink at least 2 cups a day.

Avoidance is often the key to reducing anxiety. It could be something as simple as too much caffeine or on the other end, a hormonal imbalance with STRESS smack dab right in the middle.

Start by checking the simple things on your own. But if your anxiety is constant, then seeking help from a nutritionist or herbalist may be very beneficial.

I think you need to determine the cause of your anxiety before you can start to treat it. If its constant it best to seek the help of a professional who can guide you.

If you do take any supplements to help just be sure to research what you are taking. Some may make you sleepy or have other side effects.

Supplements alone don't help with weight loss.

Thanks Rileygirl,it is mountainrose herbs...i've gotten into the habit of not proofing my posts since i often lose them when i do ...nonetheless, i can't believe I made typos with the name of this herb company twice.

i can really relate, though Tasha, to feeling anxiety...and although it's not something i normally experience, when i do , it can feel overwhelming...

but on a personal level i've always been deeply healed from it by either getting individul prescribed herbs from a TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) practitioner or a professional homeopath who is working with my constitutional remedy. i wish you the best in alleviated yours.

and..i couldn't tell if you were hoping to lose..or gain...weight through taking herbs and alleviating your anxiety through that means....but depending on the nature/cause of your anxiety..and the truly holistic, individualized herbal support you may get from a qualified professional... alleviating anxiety can potentially support many physical/emotional/spiritual changes...including losing or gaining weight when needed.

The best thing is to consult your doctor. Many of the herbal options out there is not based on good old solid large-population studies and should be taken with caution. At best they may have some effects (but how do you know if it's placebo effect or actually due to the herbs) and at worst they may be potentially dangerous if not dosed properly or if you have an underlying illness that would contraindicate their use. If your anxiety is interrupting your daily functions and quality of life, I think it's best to discuss with your doctor and see what options there are. Your doctor may offer your medication or may offer suggestions for some life style choices if you do not prefer medication. HTH!

I agree. If your anxiety is affecting your life I would suggest seeing your Dr. first. From there you can work on some lifestyle changes such as diet & exercise. Exercise is a great way to relieve anxiety.

Best to consult a doctor and go for a blood test. If you have an alternative therapist, go to them.

You could have a look at the emotional freedom technique. It's tapping on accupressure points while focusing on the issue that is causing the anxiety. It's done in a certain sequence. Can work absolute wonders.

My sister recommended a supplement called "Calm Thoughts" from Source Naturals....

I just bought a bottle but have not used it yet so I can't tell you how it works...but it's all natural with some great ingredients and my sis states that it works wonders when her stress level is maxing out...calms her right down...

I'm sorry to hear you are feeling anxious Tasha. I have some similar issues. It's great to have a good counselor or psychiatrist (it is key that you TRUST and feel COMFORTABLE) around this person. As a sensitive person myself I know the difference an empathetic ear can make. Try and connect with people on the same wave length as you (close family members and friends). Remember that you deserve every kindness and try to be extremely gentle with yourself.

Even if you can only manage a little bit of positive action a day every step counts. Good luck!

Hi Tasha,

Wondering how you're feeling about these suggestions.

I have reason today to be intimately involved in the feeling of anxiety... due to my mom's health condition taking a sudden turn for the worse,...which is causing me to relocate, for a few months, leave my husband during that period..who will be staying at home for most of that time.... and greatly alter my schedule/everyday lifestyle for a while...and i woke up this morning feeling anxiety ..yet at the same time having a clearer spontaneous perception about how unnecessary it is to respond to life from some old patterns within myself that i'm still holding onto...

which is reminding me that ,in myself, and in othes i'm close to, anxiety can be the result of a deeper force, or truth about who we are, trying to surface and redirect our lives, while our conscious self, used to our old patterns and way of being, and a bit afraid or anxious about the unknown, internally or externally, resists this 'force' this new perception of ourself, creating the, often intense feelings anxiety (depending on how deep is the new life force directing us to be someone 'different' than who we have previousl identified ourselves to be..and who others close to us, often desire us to be)

Anyway i'm off to my TCM practitioner for some new herbs before i leave town...since this is a part of the way I alleviate the sensation of anxiety...so that i can explore/allow the emerging new me to 'be'

Just wanted to tie this thread back to issues of 'beauty'... by suggesting that anxiety does effect our physical beauty....negatively, by 'degrading' it through stress related lines/sags, etc (that i feel, holistically, are interconnected with hormal changes/organs in our bodies connected with creating the symptoms of stress)..but also...positively...by 'beauify' us as we process through the underlying causes of our anxiety by giving our faces true depth, penetrating character, and a genuine air of self-confidence and spiritual/emotional clarity..all of which are subtley immeasurable, and often unconscious, aspects of how others (especially those also of depth and character) assess our outer, as well as our inner, beauty.

Hi, I just read an article on latest findings for treating any type of mental problems such as anxiety, depression etc. is Fish Oil. I have been taking it for many years and the best that I have found is Nordic Natural Cod Fish liver oil. It is usually slightly flavored and I take a teaspoon everyday. You can purchase it at Vitacost! Also, organic Flex seeds or oil helps. For any of these oils to work and for you to see a diff. they have to be taken on a daily basis. I do not know how old you are but perimenopause brings anxiety and depression for many women and these oils have been a life saver for me.

Try an SSRI! Buspirone (Buspar) is also good for general anxiety disorders. Myself, as well as several other members of my family all take the SSRI called Celexa with great success. No more panic attacks! Smile

The issue with SSRI's is you need serotonin in your "gut" and they divert serotonin from the digestive tract to the brain. This for many can cause digestive problems that interfere with life as much as having panic attacks!

A very good homeopathic remedy to try is Calms Forte by Hyland's they are quite safe and effective!
They say sleep aid but there is dosing for both sleep and anxiety. Smile

Tasha-
Are you just anxious or do you have actual anxity attacks? That would the important key in deciding on a course of action.
Stress/relaxtion techniques are helpful for common nervous dispositions, but if it is affecting your day to day life and activities, further evaluation needs to be given.
This time of year is the most prevelant to inducing stress. It's when I had more patients than any other time!

Looks like Tasha posted that in January, so hopefully she's sorted things out.

But since the thread was dug up and 'tis the season and all, a couple of years ago I started feeling extremely anxious in mid January, probably due to the constant lack of daylight. I was getting concerned since I broke into tears a couple of times for really, no reason, so I knew there was a problem. I've never been one for prescription meds (in my particular case) so a local herbal store recommended Holy Basil (Thulsi) - and wow, I saw relief almost instantly, like within a day or 2. I'd highly recommend it.

What it does is lower the body's production of cortisol which apparently is the "fight or flight" adrenaline-type stuff that's released as a response to stress. In our modern day lifestyle, we really don't need it, i.e. there's no way to blow it off, so it just stores up and makes us agitated. That's my understanding of it - feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
Anyway, it worked for me!
