I may get flamed for saying this - but I feel that I have to.
First of all, I am sorry for the loss of these families. I can't imagine the pain. They are tragedies.
When I first opened the link, I expected to see stories of deaths/injuries due to the violence related to the drug cartels. Instead, all the stories related to issues where deaths occurred due to negligence of hotel staff.
Having traveled quite a bit to Central America, Caribbean and Mexico, I have come to understand that building codes, safety and medical standards are just not the same as what you find in the US.
You are, after all, traveling to a different country.
When I travel, I know I am taking that risk.
I agree these hotel chains were negligent - but to hold the entire Mexican tourism board accountable is absurd! That country has enough bad press with the drug cartels in the north.
Just my two cents. |

My family and I have gone to the Mexican Riviera/Playa area every year for the last 14 years, sometimes 2-3 times a year and I will continue to do so.
I sympathize with these families but these stories can also be subsituted for places all around the world. Many stories occur like this in the Bahamas and don't even get me started on the cruise ship horrors!
We always go with the mindset of due diligence/awareness/safety in where you are, you are not in Kansas anymore.
We went with a group of thirty-two 22-28 year olds for 8 days when my son was married in Playa last year. It was like running a daycare with margaritas but we got them all home safe and sound.
My SIL is a famous faux artist who does paintings/ceiling & wall treatments at many of the resorts all along Mexico beaches and is there most of the year. No fear and she loves it, she is there right now.
I would hate to boycott a lovely country with some very lovely people. I will be back soon!
Thanks for pointing out the website for awareness and for the loved ones to voice their pain and frustration. But hopefully, not overreaction on anyone's part. |

The purpose of the website is to warn people who have a false sense of security just because they are staying in a five star luxury resort. They forget they are in one of the most corrupt, dangerous countries on earth. I read recently that some cruise ships are not stopping at some Mexican ports now.
Yes, you need to keep your wits about you anywhere, even in the US. It's better to be forewarned and make an informed choice, no? |

But these stories have nothing to do with the government or safety of the country as a whole. They are about negligent hotel staff. Reading these stories only would stop me from booking a particular resort, not blackballing the entire country.
I absolutely would not consider Mexico to be one of the most "dangerous countries" on earth. Just as with the US, there are areas that are more dangerous than others. I would not travel in Northern Mexico, but would visit the southern half of the country (again) in a heartbeat.
Edit to add: I am quite passionate about this, as many of the Mexicans I have met while visiting have been very hospitable and quite kind. I can't stand sweeping generalizations. |

Forewarned and informed yes.
Example, We have two 2008 Toyota Tundras in our household for our company that every day my son and hubby drive. I don't worry about stuck gas pedals or mats although we have heard the newsreports. We bought them knowing that was a possibility, forwarned and informed. They are a great value for the money and a pleasure to drive. It's about the people that drive them as well that makes the experiance. If we had an accident, would I sue Toyota? No, it was our choice to buy/drive it. I think Toyota is a great company and we support it in its struggles and image. That's how I see Mexico. My choices can influence the outcome of any situation, any time, anywhere. Therefore, my responsibilty for that choice.
I would never go to Mexico (or any country) expecting to totally let loose as though I had no cares or thought for personal safety. To let your guard down in anyplace where laws and medical care is differant than your own would be totally irresponsible. Yet parents send off thousands of spring breakers every year to Mexico, as did I for several college years. My son knew the rules, the dangers and had a healthy fear of the unknown to take with him. I could have said no, but in this case it was his choice and he was old enough. He understood the danger: If you loose your head, you might lose your life, literally. Don't be stupid and watch out for your friends that are. Simple rules we still follow on a Sat. night on 6th street. Just be aware of your surroundings and contribute to your own positive outcome as best as humanly possible.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention but I would hate to see an overreaction of negative publicity for a country already struggling with that. Still going to go back (and hopefully real soon) but just as always, aware.
The Mexican Riviera is such a beautiful place! Ola! |
