I'm looking for a brand of powder make-up that isn't shiny or pearly looking when applied to provide FULL coverage.
If you have pretty nice skin to start with and just need light coverage, the bit of pearly whateverness comes across as dewy or a healthy radiance. But if you have anything to hide (redness, pimples, veins...) and need to layer a bit more coverage, the unnatural shine is ridiculous (and tends to turn mole hills into mountains if you have any bumps).
But I love how easy powder make-up is to just brush on and to touch up! But I need matte coverage that's actually matte and not pearly. Does anybody know a brand that doesn't shine? I've tried half a dozen different brands and they all either downright shimmer like eyeshadow, or end up too pearly before even reaching medium coverage.
Ironically, the best I've found isn't a mineral foundation at all, but just a cheap Covergirl pressed powder compact that my sister gave me because she bought the wrong shade! It's fairly decent, but I want perfection (full coverage, not shiny, not cakey, won't settle in wrinkles, lasts all day, and lots of shades so there's always a great match). Any suggestions? |

Someone here recommended Jenulence which is all natural. It really makes my skin look smooth. Not shiny at all. It doesn't seem to emphasize any wrinkles but that may have more to do with application. http://www.jenulence.com/
They have lots of shades. I ordered five little samples and I'm having a helluva time figuring out which shade to buy because there are very subtle differences. That's better than too few choices. It looks lighter on my face than the color looks on the website or in the container.
As a novice mineral person, I'm learning as I go and I've learned that less is more. I can't believe what a tiny amount I need. I am going to buy a flocked sponge because I read that smoothes it over even more. Can't remember if you dampen the sponge, though. |

Try Buffd or Jlynne. They are very matte finishes. I have a referral code for Jlynne if you want to PM. There is also Meow, Pure Anada and Lumiere. |

I looked up all of these (and also Jenulence, which was mentioned by SoftSkin), and they all have mica in them. Have you guys used them yourselves, and do you have any redness or anything to cover? I'm worried that they might seem matte when used lightly, but will get that dreadful pearly shine when layered to full coverage.
I recently bought some Everyday Minerals because a few people on other forums swore their matte formula was perfectly matte, and it looks matte in the container, but alas it goes shiny when I buff on more than just the faintest touch. I can't even get to medium coverage before it's too pearly for me. I'm assuming it's the mica to blame since there's no bismuth. But it seems like there's either mica or bismuth in every kind of mineral make-up out there!
Can those of you who own some try layering it to insanely heavy coverage and also giving it a good buffing (because some types seem to get more shiny the more I blend) and let me know if you see any telltale shimmer at all? If there's a brand that stays completely matte through that, please let know so I can buy a sample. Thanks. |

I really like Abbey St Clare, still..after using their foundation for 1 year,I will rebuy that one.
It is quite matte and not too shiny.
I have been able to use their foundation as a concealer on just some spots and it blends in perfectly with my skin.
It blends so well for me that when I injured my face and had some very bad redness, people did not even believe I had injured myself and told me I was "making that up"
(I wasn't I actually fell on some cement and landed right on my face
https://store.abbeystclare.com/mineral-makeup?cat=12
I have the shade 4.0 and it is like Bare minerals medium beige. |

I have tried these that is why I suggested them. Having mica does not mean its shiny but having bismuth usually does. Mica grades vary and depending on how high it is in the formula it can give glow but not all micas give glow. I believe its used with zinc or titanium dioxiode to reduce their opacity. Perhaps the buffing makes it evident so try using a latex flat sponge.
Buffd is very matte. They also have an lighter formula but the Original is very full coverage. You can google for images of people wearing it. I dont use it unless in the summer cos it doesnt look good on dry skin.
Jlynne's owner has oily skin so understands that a matte finish is preferable on oily skin. It has high titanium in it so it will look quite matte. I found it too drying but perfect when I went to hot climates.
I only havent tried Meow cosmetics but they have a range of formulas and large color selection though they might have something that works for you.
I use the Lumiere Flawless Face and its quite a full coverage and very concentrated. It works best with my dry skin.
But the only way to know for sure is to test a few samples. That is the pain of mineral makeups. Testing and testing till you find the one you like. |

I forgot Alima is quite matte too. And there are a few companies that make mica free mineral makeup but I cant remember who they are, sorry. but it was about like three that I knew of a few years back. |

I actually did get samples from EverydayMinerals. Their "original glow" is the most ridiculously shimmery foundation I've ever seen. But how are you applying it and what's your skin type? Because even the "intensive" and "matte" formulas got pearly on me (although it might have seemed even worse do to it being the wrong shade as well, since only one of their sample set was "matte"). |

I know its a pain getting the right shade.maybe you should try getting something in a shop where you can try it before buying that way you get the right shade and finish.

I have tried many different mineral makeup companies over the years.
I have oily skin and large pores so I do NOT want dewy or shiny!
I have purchased Jenulence twice in full sizes. I still use this as a concealer daily. It is matt. This is full coverage. I did have a hard time getting a match and ended up ordering samples twice.
Other matt foundation choices; Buff'd (I tried original); Lumiere Veena Velvet (medium coverage); Beautiful Girl (original - medium coverage); etc.
I tried EveryDay minerals years ago. It did not last the day with me.
I also tried Cory minerals years ago. Very basic formula and full coverage. I had a very hard time getting a match. This would be matt.
Blusche (Cdn)has full coverage matt foundation. The concealer formula works great as a concealer. She also has great brushes and does have a pre-buy special usually once or twice a year.
Foundations I did not like:
Ocean Mist - chalky
Lure - very sheer
EcoGlo is light coverage
I like medium to heavy coverage. |

If you want to try something in a store; there is a couple of options.
Merle Norman has a true mineral makeup with a few ingredients.
Good reviews on MakeupAlley. I have not tried this.
CoverFx = SDM
I do have the concealer in a tube. Works great, but looks scary orange in the tube. |

As I mentioned I am quite oily and can use a little "blur" in a finishing powder.
If you are happy with the coverage, colour, etc. of your foundation maybe try a different finishing or setting powder.
I really like Silk Naturals. I have purchased many many times from them. I have tried the foundation. It is mix your own and I prefer a premixed.
I do like their finishing powder. This product is silica based. Similar to the HD product but a lot less $$. Leaves a matt finish but is not dry or chalky looking.

Sample sizes are available. Reasonable international shipping. Not affiliated. |

Autumn1995, thanks so much for sharing your experiences with the different make-ups. Have you found one that you're sticking with, or that you'll keep reordering while continuing the search for something better? If so, I think I'll order a sample of that first. |

I went to the link and noticed this: "If you need a bit more oil control- try our special Oil Control Blur with even more silica."
Have you tried the Oil Control version? I'd love to know your thoughts on it if you have.
Also, how fair is your skin? I'm wondering if I'd be able to use your advice on shades (for things like which Jenulence concealer color to try). I have very pale skin but dark brown hair, like Katie McGrath or Rose McGowan. |

I usually wear the lightest nuetral or lightest warm shade in foundation. I have blonde hair.
I have tried the oil control primer. This product worked but I tried a sample and did not order full size. This came out before the Blur powder. I don't think I tried the Oil Control version as the original worked so well for me. Then the untinted version came out so when I needed a refill I got untinted.
The Blur original has a tint. I can wear the tint and it does not show on me. I do prefer the untinted and reorder that in refill bags.
I also use the Original Silk Perfecting Powder from Silk Naturals. This is translucent. It can be mixed with any finishing powder or worn on its own.
Silk Naturals has their own forum and a lot of the ladies mix finishing powders. I also like some of the glows but the colour is too much for my light skin so I mix with Perfecting Powder and or Blur so it is not as dark. |

I have been using Priori mmu with coffeeberry. It is the most matte makeup I have ever used and I've tried lots! It does have the bismuth oxide in it, but no shine or pearliness at all. |

I have not tried the oil control formula in Blur. I have the original with a tint and then I reordered the newer version with no tint. I love them both.
I am usually the lightest warm or lightest nuetral shade in makeup. |

I have slowed down on my mineral makeup buying. As I started buying in 2005; I have quite the collection of mineral eye shadows, blushes, etc.
I rarely try foundation samples now.
I have full sizes of a few foundations that I wear. I wear MMU foundation almost every day.
I have Beautiful Girl original (medium coverage - matt)
Lumiere veena velvet (medium - matt)
Jenulence concealer formula - full coverage and matt. I use the Jenulence as a concealer around nose, spots.
Lucy minerals - matt; medium to full coverage. This foundation gets a lot of good reviews on various formulas. I really liked it when I first have it. BUT I suspect that it oxides or turns orange on me after a couple of hours. So it has been sitting in the drawer for now.
Joppa Minerals Morning Dew has a touch of bronzer in it and a bit of glow. I like this BUT I am sure to use a matt finishing powder and I tend to wear this as a summer colour.
Blusche Canada - is matt. The concealer formula is a great concealer for me. Heavier coverage than Jenulence.
Buff'd - had samples. Not a good colour match. Great matt formula. Canadian company. Samples and refills ship for letter post cost ($1.75?)
Melange - had samples. Great colour match. Matt and full coverage. If I did not have two full size jars of Jenulence I would have ordered. This was very similar to Jenulence for me.
I would order 3 or 4 samples of foundation to try. I also like trying eye shadow and blush. There is some great companies that have reasonable shipping and you can try some nice things for a reasonable cost.
What MMU foundations are you thinking of trying?
Have you checked out any MMU forums for more opinions? |

There is some forums for mineral makeup that are very helpful.
I like to visit:
http://forums.delphiforums.com/n/main.asp?webtag=mineralmania&nav=start&prettyurl=%2Fmineralmania%2Fstart
This is mostly talk on minerals and tools. At the start page is a drop down for a list of mineral makeup companies.
There is also a link for a list of ingredients in foundation.
I also like:
http://www.87px.net/mmf/viewforum.php?f=14&sid=a490eb11cebd10640c0e1077c8a20d4e
These ladies love mineral makeup also. You will notice it is a different group and they have different favorites. EDM is NOT a favorite on this site. Many former EDM users and members on the EDM forum have switched to other products on Chanty's forum.
Also if you are thinking of a couple of companies, many MMU have their own forum. On their own forum, you can get help with colour matching.
For example; I am a regular shopper with Silk Naturals. JenW (mod) and Karen the owners are on the forum on a regular basis. Jen is excellent at helping to colour match. SN is a mix your own and it works well for many. |

I'm not sure; your entire list sounds good and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed at how many options there are. Although I'm leaning toward the ones with full coverage, because I can always just apply a bit less if I don't need the heavy coverage, right? But I like knowing the potential for full coverage is there if I need it.
For the ones where you like the concealer, do those work well as foundation also if you just apply less of it where you don't need as much coverage? Or should I really go with a separate concealer and foundation? I'm worried about finding a good color match so the two will blend properly. My old make-up worked brilliantly as both, but they discontinued it.
Oh, and I'm noticing that a lot of places have "pink" undertone foundation shades. Have you ever tried using those for blush? I like extremely subtle and natural blush colors.
Also, thanks for the forum links. I hadn't found those before. |

My skin was much worst years ago and I did wear and NEED full coverage on a daily basis. I wore Jenulence as a full face and added some as a concealer also. You need very little with Jenulence. When you are looking at full coverage MMU; it is not as forgiving as light or medium coverage. Your shade needs to be right on or else it just does not look right. It is easy to over apply a full coverage foundation.
I would not wear any of the pinkish foundation shades as blush. I can suggest using a fibre optic brush and a natural sheer shade of blush. Most of my mineral blushes are from Silk Naturals and there is other companies that have wonderful colours for fair ladies.
If your skin is good overall; I would suggest a medium coverage that is buidlable. You can apply a second layer if needed. You can use concealer (mineral or commercial) where needed. You can use colour correctors if needed. I have a couple of green ones that work great to neutralize redness. I also love the finishing powders from Silk Naturals.
There is a couple of companies to watch for as in bad customer service. There is a few that charge too much for international shipping. (Suncat and Monave, etc.) Overall, the small MMU indie companies are great to deal with! |
