Hello everyone
I stumbled across this site while was I was googling for some other thing and I read up and I felt like i've hit a goldmine!
I was just browsing and then decided to just jump in
I have this stock of cocoa butter (no shea butter sadly) and I wanted to make some body butter (for an extremely dry skinned friend of mine) and other creams, lotions. I have no idea of how to preserve a cream I only have a recipe using cocoa butter, oil, beeswax, vit e oil and essential oil. I dont even get a ready made preservative where I live. The material on this forum is really overwhelming! I am trying to find ingredients for the vit-c serum for my mother that alone is a herculean task *sigh*
anyway rant done~
can someone please help me with a recipe or even a link will do |

Hi Ami,
I am sure others will pop in with help or suggestions but in the meantime, here is a link to the DIY Recipe Index: http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=11902 where you will find most of the recipes shared by our talented members. Also in the index is a section near the bottom called "DIY Suppliers & Websites where to buy DIY ingredients etc." that you might find helpful.
Welcome to EDS. |

If it's an oil-based body butter, then I don't think you need to worry about adding a preservative, ami. It's when you add water that you need to worry about adding a preservative. |

Simple recipe,
Oils you can change[ liquid at room temp.], butters you can change,[ but must be solid at room temperature] but try to keep the proportions.
25 g Cocoa butter
25 g Shea butter
35 g carrier oil of choice
Vit E 1/4 tsp
10 drops EO's of choice or more or less..what you like.
Recipe can be multiplied and keep the proportions the same.
1. Melt butter gently in double boiler.
2. Let cool...but not solidify
3. Then add carrier oils. Not EO's at this point as the heat will cause them to dissipate very rapidly.
Whisk and chill the mix , [ or use a beater]
4. Add Vit E whisk like a mad man.
5. Add EO"s. Whisk again.
Chill and whisk [ multiple times *]....until frothy like a meringue. Then pour into sterilized jars. Use a spatula to remove the butter before applying to keep bacteria from being introduced. Should be good up to 3 months and may last longer if refrigerated.
I make this up depending on the skin type of whoever is receiving it. So far...people really enjoy it. My mother likes it...so that's a good start.

Okay...
50 g Cocoa butter
35 g of whatever oil you have on hand
1/4 tsp Vit E
EO's.
Sterilize everything you use first and do not get any water into the mix and keep pinkies out of it.
Have fun. |

I cant believe it! I just bought 100g/ml each of pure, unrefined Cocoa and Shea Butters, just 5 minutes ago, and i popped straight over here to check the boards for any Body Butter recipes suitable for boobs and tums - i love this place more and more! LOL i didnt have to look hard at all! You guys are grrrrreat!
Im definitely going to base my bodybutter on your basic recipe above, Kassy. Thanks so much with being kind (and clever) enough to share it with us! I didnt have a clue where to start with proportions etc. But i do have a question...
Im planning to use this DIY bodybutter on breast and tummy skin that has been severely stretched during pregnancy (i was HUGE!)
I would like to add some extra goodies to try and improve the thin, weak, over-stretched skin that is slack (lost all it's plumpness and stretchiness) and full of stretchmarks (which appear like wrinkles).
Could anyone suggest any actives or additives that may be a nice addition to a 'repairing' DIY 'Mummy-Tummy' BodyButter, please? |

Also addressing acute stretchmarks on stomach & hips due to pregnancy & weight loss. |

Might want to add the oil soluble Vit C THDA, Tetrahexyldecylascorbic acid....John sells it. Plop on more vitamin E, Play with different oils or butters based on their properties for the skin
BUT...don't add it when the stuff is hot. Wait till it is cool and plop some in. Will need to check out the effective amounts and calculate based on the total recipe.
It's a simple recipe...and a little goes a very long way. Pure goodness for the skin. Depending on the oils you use, it will take longer or less time to soak in...but your skin will thank you.
Avocado oil is lovely...but takes a while to go in, however the effect on the skin is quite amazing. |

Thanks DragoN -
I love the idea of adding Avocado Oil seeing as its for the body (would break my face out, but hopefully will be fine for body).
I also love the idea of the oil-soluble vit c.
I wasnt sure if any of the actives like: Natural Peptides, Matrixyl 3000, Dermagen, Copper Peptides, CoQ10, Mitochondrial Concentrate, Ceramides, EGF etc would be helpful to REPAIR or strengthen the weak, thinned, stretched-out skin? - or to perhaps increase collagen or elastin, perhaps?
Any thoughts on these type of actives for such purposes? xxxx |

I tried making this type of recipe once before and had a problem with the ingredients separating. Have any of you had a problem with this?
Thank you |

Hey Ami, for vitamin E oil...simply use Vitamin E capsules. You should get them at most medical stores. And they work wonderfully on dry skin. |

I just wanted to bring up this old post to thank DragoN for such a foolproof and effective DIY Body Butter recipe. It really works! (and this is my 1st DIY cream/moisturiser, so if i can do it *anyone* can!)
I doubled the quantities of butters, so:
*50g Pure Cocoa Butter & *50g Pure Shea Butter,
then:
*45g Rosehip Oil & *35g Pure Emu Oil (so 80g Carrier Oils instead of 70g),
*1 1/2tsp Pure Vitamin E Oil (instead of 1/2tsp),
and instead of EOs i used:
*10 squirts of SAS Anti-Oxidant Booster (from SkinActives.com)
I'm trying for a baby, and already have stretchmarks from previous pregnancy, so wanted a REALLY rich Anti-Stretchmark Boob & Tummy Butter to start deeply nourishing my skin. This is why i upped the Vitamin E content considerably... I used Emu Oil b/c its meant to sink to lower layers of the skin than any other carrier oil, carrying nutrients through with it, and Rosehip Oil b/c its meant to be good for stretchmarks. I left out EOs as there seems some discrepancy as to whether they're safe during pregnancy, and i added the SAS Anti-Ox Booster as it contains some skin beneficial actives along with Pomegranate Oil and a higher quality Rosehip Oil than i used for the main recipe.
Verdict: This recipe looks good enough to eat! So fluffy, moussy and professional looking! Im so impressed.
More importantly it feels AMAZING on the skin - richer than ANY other body cream or body-oil i've ever used! It takes a while to sink in, but it leaves skin feeling and looking plumper, smoother and like silk. This is like the caviar of bodybutters - probably because its 100% packed with pure nourishing butters and oils instead of other stuff.
This double portion looks like it will last me a LONG time! maybe 6months or more!.. so its hugely cost effective too!
Sorry for the long message, just wanted to rave about this awesome recipe - try it!.. you wont regret it! |
