I started the OCM about 5 days ago. I've been doing it every night since. I have been using about 75% jojoba oil, and 25% castor oil. I massage it in to my face about 5 to 10 minutes, and it does feel like it's getting pores unclogged. Then I use steaming water and a fresh, clean washcloth, steam my face a few times and completely wipe off the oil. When I'm done my skin feels really nice, extremely smooth, but not oily.
After the first day my skin was still OK, ever since then it has been a horror. On the second day I woke up with two cystic pimples, one on my chin and another above my lip near my cheek. I rarely get a cystic pimple, and when I do it's usually on my cheek by my ear, not in these spots. Then on the third day or so, I got a bunch of little red marks on both of my upper cheeks! I did some research and ended up cutting the castor oil out of it and did the routine with just jojoba oil last night. This morning my red areas are still there, but now there were a bunch of tiny white heads, another thing that has never happened to my skin.
Why does the OCM seem not to work for me? Is this normal? I would love to use a natural cleansing method for my face and I love the look of healthy skin. The oils I used were organic and high quality, and the washcloths I used were clean and new.
About my skin: I would guess I have normal to combination skin. When I get oily its just in my T zone. Most of my skin is normally clear, aside from a random pimple. The main thing I hate about my skin (and the reason I started OCM) is because of my large pores on my nose. I realized they are not blackheads but just pores clogged with sebum. Whenever I squeeze my nose tons of sebum pops out. Aside from that, I just get a random pimple. My skin is normally healthy looking, so this problem I'm having now is so so upsetting I never thought of myself to have overly sensitive skin. I use Retin-A every other night (so that I don't get wrinkles). My normal routine before OCM is a salicylic acid face wash (Murad), and a vitamin C serum in the morning. I cut out the face wash and used the OCM only. As of two days ago, I started to try witch hazel after OCM (and in the morning) to make sure my face was clean.
What can I do to clear up my problem skin now? Do I just go back to my normal routine?
After I'm clear, what can I try? I do want to have a healthier/cheaper/more chemical free routine! |

Hi! It's well worth skimming the first fifteen pages of the OCM thread - you will find posts from a number of people whose skin has worsened before it improved. Some had success adding a little tea tree to their oil blend, tissuing off the excess oil before steaming, only using 10% castor oil, or just letting the breakout run its course. Vitamin C serums can worsen clogged pores, it may be worth changing that. Diagnosing your skin type from symptoms is quite difficult; harsh ingredients such as retinols, benzoyl peroxide, sulphate surfactants, salicylic acid can make skin dehydrate and/ or produce more sebum and/ or damage the skin's protective acid mantle.

Another option is to do OCM 1-2 times a week, and then work your way up to more often. That's what I did. But yes, I agree, reading the OCM threads will be very helpful |

Keep in mind, OCM isn't for everyone.. I had far more success with DIY HCCC. OCM didn't really do much of anything for me regardless of which oil I used in conjunction with castor oil. |
