Hi, I am planning on doing a 12.5% TCA peel soon from MakeUp Artist's Choice. For the past year I have been doing 20% Salicylic 3 times a week and a combination peel of Glycolic (25%) and Lactic (35%) acid weekly. I am a swimmer and swim everyday, however I read to stay away from pools after a peel. I am planning on staying out of the pool (indoor) for 3-4 days after the peel, then returning. I was just wondering if this is enough time to wait, and if anyone has had any experience with this. My feeling is if the pH of pools are well maintained, then chlorine levels usually are very safe. I don't expect much down time as my face is adjusted to chemical peels and the concentration is on the low end. A little irritation I can deal with, although I am interested to know if I should be worried about scarring.
Also, how long until I can return to shaving? The directions say 2 weeks on the bottle. So long as my face is done peeling, is it ok to carefully shave? Thank you. |

I did the 12.5 tca peel from MAC years ago. For me, it was somewhat mild. My skin did get tight and dry..and three days later is starts to flake and peel..and it stops in a few days. The higher percent peels...15, 20 and 25 percent..those are the ones with downtime.
I actually layered the peel the next time so I'd get more peeling. I liked the results.
I'd write them with your pool question..they are good at emailing you back quickly. |

Thank you for your helpful information. For the 12.5%, both layered and non-layered, were you looking back to normal and able to resume normal activity with a week? I am trying to plan when I should do this peel |

yes..for me I peeled on the third day..and it lasted two days..maybe three. my neck and hands peeled later..because the skin is thinner...so it will be longer if you include those areas.
I would do my face, neck, chest, and hands.
Just time it out right..because for two days you'll look just fine..so make sure you don't have anything speical planned on day three, four..and maybe five. ok? Still you just are peely..not a monster or anything... I stil went out and about. |

I am wondering if anyone can recommend a reputable seller for TCA peels at home. I am 48 with some old acne scars, uneven skin tone, sagging and SH (I sound really attractive don't I?) I was thinking of doing a 15% TCA peel to start. I have read a lot of good reviews from users of the 25%, but don't want to start with anything too aggressive. I have also read that the results from at 12.5% and lower may not yield the best results and if I am going to endure the downtime I want to make sure I get the most bang for my buck. I think I have seen a few posters buying from MUAC. Any others I should look into? |

Hi Flipper, I have bought TCA peels from MUAC and had good results. You didn't say what kind of skin you have but I wouldn't start with anything higher then 15% and you could easily start with a lower %. You should do a patch test to see how your skin will react first. TCA peels can be done safely at home but they are strong and you really need to follow the directions. We have had members who didn't think it was any big deal to do a 25% peel and the results are not what they wanted. I understand about your wanted to get results if you are going to have down time but you can always do 2 layers with a weaker solution after you know how your skin will react down the line. |

Hi Cookie,
Thanks for your response. My skin is somewhat oily, although I do not get acne any more thanks to menopause. I used to do 30% glycolic acid peels many years ago, but it didn't seem to have any affect at all. I am sure that my skin is more sensitive now that I am older, so you make a good point about layering a lower percentage. I suppose I could start with 12.5%, but I don't really have the luxury of time, so if I decide to do a second peel, it could be 6mo. to a year before I will have the time again. How many times have you done TCA and at what strengths? What type of results did you see and how long did it last? Sorry for so many questions. |

I have done probably 6 or 8 different TCA peels over the years. I started with 12.5% and saw no peeling. Moved up to 15% and then 18%. I think I did 3 layers of the 18% on my last peel. But I have much tougher skin then average.
After my peels my skin looks more even tone, fresher and smaller pores. A few of the surface lines are gone but no real difference on deeper wrinkles. The tone and freshness of the skin last for awhile. The reduction in pores size doesn't last that long for me.
I haven't done a peel for about 2 years. If you have time do a test spot somewhere on your face and just see how it reacts. If your test works out ok at least you will have a greater comfort level that you won't have problems with a stronger peel. Just make sure you read the directions and follow them. |

Thanks again Cookie, I will definitely do a test before I go all out. Have you ever used it on your chest? I have a lot of sun spots there. I still have some time to research before I do my peel. I need to wait until October. Maybe I should do it right before Halloween and work it into some creepy costume (Freddie Kruger style-LOL) |

Hi flipper. I didn't use it on my chest area. At the time that wasn't an area of concern of mine. It might be a good idea to do a test run and just do your chest area. Since that is a fairly easy area to hide with clothing you would not have to worry about all the peeling. So the down time wouldn't really matter. That way when you were ready to do you face at a later date you would have a better idea how you skin will react. |

Interestingly, the areas of the body not generally exposed are MORE sensitive to tca than those that are ie face, in my experience. You might find that arms and chest will be more sensitive and take longer to peel.
Nothing wrong with a little scientific experiment! Just saying, it may not be an accurate reflection of what you can expect from the face. |

I suppose I am going to have little test patches all over before I dive in. Wonder how my DH will react-LOL. I'll let you know how it goes when I finally get the time to do it. |
