I'm sending out the bat signal - I'm 52 and just this summer my very fair skinned face has become incredibly sensitive to the sun. I've tried lots of sunscreens and either I get an allergic reaction to them or they just don't work (resulting in sunburn)I wear a big hat everywhere but am looking for that great sunscreen that is not waterproof and full of bad chemicals and fragrances as my skin has become extremely sensitive to everything. I'm looking for extreme protection, not just something that goes under makeup. Thanks so much for your help!!!!

Burnout has an SPF 30 with zinc and not a lot of extra filler. Solbar makes a zinc only sunscreen but the white cast may be apparent. Australia's Blue Lizard brand is also good and so are Badger SPF products in terms of their organic ingredients and sun protection. MD Solar Science SPF is zinc based but pricey.

If you are as adamant as you sound about sun protection, I think an SPF 30 will suffice for day to day. Anything higher is hard to find and may make little difference if you wear a hat and take other protective measures as you say. Don't stress! You'll find something.

Astaxanthin is a supplement which decreases the effects UV light has on skin. I take it everyday and did so in the Virgin Islands. I didn't burn! It's wonderful stuff with additional benefits aside from UV protection. I use EltaMD SPF 40 on my face daily. It does not make me break out or turn red. Good luck!

Elta MD Physical SPF 41 is a really nice sunblock, one of the best sunblocks for sensitive skin.

Skinceuticals carries some pretty prime sunscreen options.

I am very sensitive to the sun as well! Extremely pale skin I start burning within 15 minutes. I find that only 100+ SPF helps to prevent me from getting sunburned (as long as I reapply properly). Does anyone have any recommendations for one? I have a hard time finding it and the one that I did find is full of chemicals (I would like closer to if not completely all natural). Thanks!

There is absolutely no reason to use a sunblock with SPF 100+. It will be full of chemicals as no physical element can achieve SPF 100.

Use a sunblock with a high SPF/UVA index. For example, Bioderma SPOT SPF 50+ UVA 38.

http://www.bioderma.com/en/our-products/photoderm/spot-spf-50

Reapply it every 2 hours.

If your skin is SUPERsensitive, however, use a sunblock with physical filters only and without FRAGRANCE and ALCOHOL.

For example, Exuviance Sheer Daily Protector Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 PA++++

http://www.amazon.com/Exuviance-Sheer-Daily-Protector-SPF/dp/B00UIID20Y

OR Obagi Nu-Derm Physical UV Block SPF 32

http://www.lovelyskin.com/o/obagi-nu-derm-physical-uv-block-spf-32-6

My personal all-time fav is ELTA MD UV Physical SPF 41:

I hope I can help - I am also super pale and went through the same hypersensitivity and couldn't find anything for awhile that didn't burn my skin. definitely only use physical ones. All chemical ones burn my skin.

Extreme protection- Neutrogena physical sunscreen- doesn't irritate at all, works great, but looks super white. Only a sport or beach sunscreen for me.

Burnout is ok but I find it a bit opaque and tacky/drying.

I love Epicuren- the yellow bottle. It's the best I have found and I have tried so many brands. You can hardly see it on your face at all, and it has a nice smooth texture, like a light moisturizer. Doesn't clog my pores or break me out. I tried skinmedica physical sunscreen and that was ok too.

I have been avoiding the sun so I can't say I've tested that on a tropical beach trip though but perhaps you could try it on a short trip outside and see how it holds up.

I hope it helps! I have totally been there...

I'm very sensitive to octocrylene, which many high-SPF sunscreens have but which can, believe it or not, interact with the sun to irritate the skin. Mine had an itchy red rash for WEEKS after using an SPF 50! The same brand's SPF 30 doesn't contain octocrylene and is fine on my skin.

I would recommend pure physical sunscreen. It's usually less irritating. The zinc oxide is actually a good barrier compound used in prescription cream/ointment for bad skin rash etc.
I use Replenix physical sunscreen. It's light and non-sticky without white cast.

I heard that Esthitian of Esthederm (sp?) has an excellent one (not sold on EDS) and Shiseido just came out with one which is what I am using.

I think I am getting sensitive to the sun also.

For my daily sunscreen, I am using Dermaxsol from Solvaderm. Not only does it serve as a good moisturizer but it also protects my skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun. It has SPF 30 which is just perfect for my everyday routine.

Since your skin is very sensitive now, I suggest you try baby sunscreen now. Burnout and thinkbaby are two brands I trust, it might be very thick but it is safe.

You might also want to check out something like Heliocare or Sunsafe RX. These are supplements you take that contain an extract from a fern that helps to protect your skin from the inside out. I buy mine from Amazon.

Has anyone tried tried skinmedica total defense (new ) sunscreen? Is that good for melasma skin. I really like the texture cant seem to make decision if i should stick with burnout since its only physical block or go ahead with skin medica.

Hazelwood, A physical sunscreen is one that contains no chemicals.Which one you use just depends on how important that is to you.Either type will protect you, which in the long term will prevent your melasma from getting worse;however, it will not treat your melasma in any way.

I used "Shade All-Natural Sunscreen Mineral Sun Cream, 100% Natural Only 4 Ingredients: Organic Coconut Oil, Unrefined Shea Butter, Unrefined Beeswax, Cosmetic Grade Non-Nano Zinc Oxide, Tested to EU Standards, SPF25 Non-Toxic, Suitable for All Skin Types and All Ages, Babies and Children (Original (Unscented), 100ml)" bought from amazon, uk. It is only SPF25 but it seemed to work really well. I have an olive complexion.

As an Asian, I prefer Japanese suncreen products, like shiseido, cle de peau, cosme decorte, Allie, etc. They're more comfortable.
