It seems to be in several new skincare products. I was just reading this link, http://www.anyvitamins.com/astaxanthin-skin.htm, and the study results are pretty impressive! For kicks about an hour ago I punctured an astaxanthin capsule and slathered it on my skin. It's dark! Pinkish orange to be exact. I was a bit afraid that I had stained my skin but it's an hour later now and my face looks normal, I guess it absorbed.
Looks like there are several skincare products with this as an ingredient, I was wondering if anyone had tried them? Or if anyone has seen results from the supplements? I've just started taking them a week ago |

I haven't used any purchased products with this in it, but heard/read about as a skin care ingredient at least 6-7 years ago and I just puncture the gel caps and mix it in with my moisturizer or oils, I mainly use it at night as what I have is very orange it doesn't stain my skin but it's not a look I would go for in the daytime! LOL
If I am not mistaken DermaE has used it in a few products for quite a while. |

I have taken it also and I really wonder how much of a difference we can expect to see on our skin with most supplements unless we have a severe deficiency of something? |

I’ve been taking astaxanthin supplement for about 3 years and used 2 jars of Derma-E Age Defying Day Cream, Night Cream and Eye Cream which has astaxanthin in it. I did not “SEE” any improvement anywhere at all.
But my husband who is a very competitive athlete takes astaxanthin 1 hour before training and playing basketball as it suggested told me this supplement really makes a big difference. He said it gives him lots of energy. He feels lots of “oxygen” going into his body & brain. |

Hello DarkMoon....I completely agree with you. I take many nutritional supplements however, I can't really say that it makes a difference in my skin meaning improving the texture, tone, elasticity etc. My siste, who doesn't take anything, looks great. I can't say she looks better than I do but aside from our genetics I don't think my supplements have done much to retard or halt the aging process, which is certainly what I would like them to do.

I bought it as an ingredient from Skin Actives, mainly because it's supposed to help with sun protection. Skin Actives uses it in a couple of their ready made products. It will turn anything you use it in a bright orange color. I added it to an oil mixture I made - I was trying to copy Marie Veronique's Sun Protection Oil which also includes astaxanthin. |

DarkMoon, I took your idea and added a capsule to my baobab oil blend!
leeleedeedee and MacCrisis, I thinks it's the same with our products, we use so many who knows what is working
Skippie, thanks for letting me know about the Skin Actives products. Hmm I wonder what their source is? |

leeleedeedee,
What nutritional supplements (and from what brand) do you currently take? |

Ive taken it as a supplement and it was in a serum I tried but cant say I noticed a difference either... Then again I dont think antioxidants are a set in stone method of anti ageing. |

I take it daily and have been for a year or so. Can't say it has any difference at all that I can list but yet I continue to take it. Go figure.
Maybe I need to open it up as well and try it on my face. We'll see what happens. |

So, are you all taking astaxanthin separately from your daily multivitamin?
Or is it included in your multivitamin? |

That is the best thing that I ever tried For me krill oil is a miracle and I can not leave without it . I had very bad shoulder and neck pains . I started to take krill oil in December and all the pain disappeared. If I don't take it for a couple of days the pain is back:(
I never tried it topically but I think that is a great idea |

What I've read about astaxanthin is that it is supposed to help prevent pigmentation from appearing on the skin. I took capsules of it for about 2 months, but I can't say I noticed a difference either, but I'm not sure that this is something that you're supposed to SEE a difference with... it's preventative. It's also a powerful antioxidant and is produced by various plants and algae. It is eaten by various marine animals and the red pigment is so strong that it gives lobsters, crabs, shrimp and various fish their red color. |

I feel that astaxanthin is a bit overrated, especially considering it's priced above other carotenoid supplements that have a bit better track record as far as their application for vanity purposes go. I certainly didn't notice any improvement in skin's appearance or behavior (more elasticity, more moisture, plumpness, reduction of fine lines and what else was claimed), except I think it did turn skin a bit darker, similar to xanthaemia, but it was very subtle. I took it for a few months, with fatty food and 10 mg a day divided in two capsules, so according to the claims, I should've noticed something in about two months. No other health changes or improvements while taking astaxanthin. Admittedly I haven't bothered to look up respectable sources if there even is some solid research on astaxanthin either.
However, I'm not really the ideal person to judge that, since no beauty vitamin have ever worked for me except for two that have bit of solid science behind them as well. Either I'm immune to vanity pills or they are superflous and show results only in people who are deficient. Balanced diet works out so much better for me. |

I tried it in a lip balm but it was a weird neon orange. To get a therapeutic level in skin care it would be too orange to wear and would stain. I vote for taking it by mouth.
SunTegrity has a supp with it + other sun protectives:
Ingredients Include:
Vitamin D3, Vitamin E, Proprietary Blend (Polypodium Extract, Astaxanthin, Reishi, Hu Zhang, Blueberry, Cranberry, Grape Seed, Grape Skin, Beta-carotene, Lutein)

I just started taking it 2 weeks ago, too soon to tell what effect it will have. |

Another option is to take a daily multivitamin that has several forms of vitamin A. |

I gave up trying to formulate with this supplement (other than a once a week mask that's totally ICK anyway.) Most of the really beneficial supplements are deeply colored and/or really stink to high Heavens.
I just take it 3 or 4 times a week and call it a day. Can't say I notice anything positive from taking this supplement. To be honest, the only credit I can give a supplement unequivocally, would be the hair & nail growth that is off the charts since I started taking MSM. |

I've taken astaxanthin as a supplement for about three years. Usually 8 mg a day, currently 12. I use Bioastin but any from Hawaii are produced by Cyanotech.
Both my husband and I noticed improvements in vision. He had to change glasses within two weeks. I noticed sleeping better too.
A recent study said that skin color improves, and that the opposite sex liked the color better than a tan. My favorite benefit is I don't use sunscreen, unless I am going to be in strong sun for hours. My skin never even gets pink in the summer...I think its a very effective internal sunscreen. |

does anyone know of source in powdered form? I would love to try this as a powder to see if I can tolerate it better than the capsules, - but I can only seem to find it as a fish food,

^It is available on eBay from several different suppliers. You'll have to shop around for good feedback sellers, etc. I imagine if there are absolutely no fillers or preservatives, you'd be ok to use it even if it is marketed as a fish food additive.
As a few others have mentioned, I've also only tried it as a supplement. I didn't notice much difference in my skin either, but that might be due to the fact that I'm always doing so many other things to/for my skin. There's no real way to tell without testing it on it's own, and that's not really an option for me any more.
Sorry that that's not much help, but I figured I'd throw in my two cents. |
