Hi, I went to a dermo info convention in Toronto, because I want to change my career and get into medical aesthetics.

I spoke to a few people with that title. And all of them gave me a different answer on how to go about getting into this field.

One said that you try to get a job with a dermotologist doctor and get trained. She also said that it is a waist of money to go to school because the doctor would want to mold you to their way of doing things and they would have to teach you their machines.

Another peson told me that I need to be a registered nurse and that is the only way to get into this field.

Others said to go to school and look for a job.

Is there anyone in this field that can advise me the best way to get into this?

I have been working as a medical esthetician in a plastic surgeon's office for the past 2 years. When I first graduated school, I worked in a day spa for almost a year. It was good experience, saw lots of different skin types, etc..

From that job I got bored just doing facials and waxing and so I started looking for jobs in Dermatology. I got a job in a derm's office and worked there for 2 years. Again, great experience, and what i liked most was learning about common prescriptions, what they do, etc.. I really only did chemical peels and microderm there...

Then I saw an ad for a plastic surgeon that was looking for an esthetician, sent my resume in, and got the job! Now i do more interesting things like photofacials, and laser hair removal (in addition of course, to peels and microderm). I was trained by the laser company on how to perform the procedures, as every companys lasers and protocals are different.

Hope this info helps you- I took "baby steps" to get into medical esthetics and I suggest you do the same. Doctor's that are trusting you with their patients want an experienced, motivated esthetician that is willing to learn. I wouldn't get your hopes up to graduate school and work in a doc's office right away. Also, these jobs are hard to come by, but don't get discouraged looking. You can also check into all these medspas that are opening up everywhere.

Best of Luck to you!! Very Happy

Why is it so hard to find a job in this field? I thought this is a growing industry and that gets me really excited because I am always doing research on skincare products and how to make your skin better.

There are a lot of opportunities in Medical Aesthetics industry. You may take an aesthetic diploma, skin care technician course, laser technician training etc. The only thing is to choose good school. For that, asking around is the best way. I think there is no difficulty in finding such a school in Canada as there are tons. I have got a suggestion. Check Cestar College of Business Health and Technology. Just Google it since i cant post links here.
