Hi all, I'd read that niacinamide could help with hyper pigmentation so I tried out the following products:
Sunscreen: Elta MD UV Clear containing 5% niacinamide
Brightening product: Philosophy Miracle Worker Dark Spot Corrector which also has niacinamide as the 5th ingredient on the list.
Is it possible that I could be allergic to niacinamide? I've tried using these two products over a couple of weeks and each time I use them, I experience skin redness and peeling (especially that sunscreen!) My skin also remains irritated for the next few days after I stop using them.
Has any one else encountered this before? |

When you say skin redness, is it rash-like or is it red spots? Does it itch? You say there is skin peeling, but sunscreens don't usually cause your skin to peel. If I had to guess, the peeling would be more from the Philosophy product.
I use a product with niacinamide in it right now. My skin is very sensitive. I do have some blotchy redness, but I have never thought niacinamide to be the culprit. On pubmed, niacinimide has been researched and it is reported to be an ingredient that has the ability to communicate with skin cells and improve the skin. |

My skin turns red upon contact with the philosophy product and its blotchy. The effect doesn't seem to persist after I wash it off.
On the other hand, the sunscreen causes a much stronger reaction. It goes on relatively smoothly but the product quickly starts balling up and flaking off around drier parts of my face like my jawline. At the end of the day, my skin is blotchy red in parts, dry, with some small red bumps. It's also sensitive to the touch.
I researched some old threads and found that users with sensitive skin have not been able to use nia 24 ( with pro niacin). |

I just read a short article regarding the conversion of niacinamide to niacin in the presence of acids, and how this can cause a skin reaction.
"Another interesting thing to note: This interaction may be why many people (and Ive seen many personal reviews stating this) say that they are allergic to products containing niacinamide. Whether by a heightened lowering/increasing of the skins pH by another product, or innate physiology, this flushing of the skin caused by niacin, may have been mistaken as an allergic reaction."
I don't know if this is relevant to your situation, but you can find the article at

I definitely have a reaction to Niacinamide (B3). Several months apart, I tried different products with this B3 in it and both times I had inflamed skin on my cheeks. It hurt and lasted several days. I told my sister about this and she reported the same type of reaction. I avoid this now at all cost. |

If you're using 2 products that have niacinamide in it, that might be too much for your skin. The nia can cause blushing anyway, but you might be over doing it. Use only one of the products and see if that helps.
FYI- the NIA 24 product line mentions blushing as a side effect of their products, but also say that it can go away after some time.

Niacin causes my skin to flush so it aggravates my rosacea. I cannot use anything that contains very much of it or take the supplement. |
