I'm curious about the ingredient alcohol denat. I have found out that it is ethyl alcohol with an added ingredient that makes it undrinkable, but what are the pros and cons of it as a skin care product ingredient? TIA

Same as alcohol. Drying and possibly irritating.

Some skin care companies will say that because it is derived from organic wheat or whatever it's actually beneficial for the skin...not true at all. It's the exact same molecule.

the purpose is to dry out the skin basically, it is commonly used in acne care products and has the function of a quick fix.

as a cosmetic ingredient, it is used to help emulsify other ingredients because it is a solvent.

i find it quite frustrating that most "serums" are alcohol based.. it helps to make the actives penetrate better.

Because I have such dry skin and hair, I try to avoid it wherever possible. However, they throw it into so very many products - it annoys me senseless.

Edenfield is right - it is drying and irritating especially to sensitive skin types like myself. I can't use it and avoid it entirely.

Some organic skin care lines like Dr.H. seem to have it in almost all of their products. What a shame!!

I second that!
I`ll finish my Dr.H clarifying toner and will never buy it again! Mad

Apparently, not all alcohols are bad. I admit, I'm not a big fan of alcohol as well since I'm afraid that they'll dry out my skin and increase my chances of getting wrinkles. But I did a bit of research and found that fatty alcohols or alcohol with higher molecular weight are actually non-irritating or drying. These include cetyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol, cetostearyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol 40, C12-15 alcohols, stearyl alcohol and lanolin alcohol, and they are used as emulsifiers, thickening agents and stabilizers, allowing skin care products to have silky-smooth formulations. In addition, lanolin alcohol and stearyl alcohols also act as moisturizing factors. Oh and if anyone is using coconut oil, you are already using alcohol because cetyl, cetearyl, cetostearyl and cetyl alcohol 40 are all derived from it Rolling Eyes

Basically, the best way to remember which are the "good" alcohols is to recognize the 5 "C"s, which I think stands for 5 carbons. And remember the "steer left" where "steer" stands for stearyl alcohol and "left" stands for lanolin alcohol.

As for denatured alcohol, it's part of the 3 carbon family and is somewhat drying and irritating. But dermatologist say that you should always check the ingredients list. If it comes at the bottom of the list, then the small amount won't be harmful but would actually be advantageous at eliminating excess oil from the face (if you have oil/combination skin I guess) Wink

I know this is an old thread but this ingredient really irks me! Why is this present in so many products? I wanted to add skinceuticals phloretin product to my c/e ferulic!
