Hello, my first post.. very obsessed with this website.
I exercise a lot.. 6-9 mile runs a day and then lifting weights. I am prone to blackheads in general (I have combo skin). I am actually getting extractions once a week. It is pricey but nothing else works sadly, when I don't exercise as much, my skin is much better and very clear. I use all dermalogica products. My skin is very smooth and looks very clear, but there's "junk" that must be extracted, mainly do to sweat. Also, my hair is much drier due to exercise bc I wash it every day. It is past my waist and curly.
Does anyone have any blackhead remedies? I would like to stop going once a week.. ironically, I am starting esthetic school in a few weeks and want my skin to look perfect! I've become obsessed. I would appreciate any information. |

You should be doing your own extractions. I used to do mine daily, now I rarely have to. I do them better than any pro I've ever paid to do them. Sephora and tweezerman both make the little loop tools, I slightly prefer the sephora one because the handle is longer and more ergonomic feeling. |

Are you cleansing your skin before you work out? That is very important so you do not sweat grime back into your pores.. |

Welcome to this forum, royanola To save money, I would suggest that you buy your own extraction tools like this one (from Sephora):
http://www.sephora.com/product/productDetail.jsp?keyword=extraction%20tools&skuId=1408392&country_switch=ca&productId=P231607&_requestid=22595
Also, Walmart sells this too and is located near the nails/foot care section...
If you can afford it, you can buy a Clarisonic brush to thoroughly clean your skin with a good foaming gel (or cream) suited for your skin type. Use every night will ensure that before going to bed, you have totally remove any make-up or grime on your skin.
A good daily cleaning of skin is a great way to maintain good skin, before even putting any make-up on.... Good luck! |

And if it makes you feel better, your skin will look HORRIBLE during school because of the non-stop cleansing and massaging. I went to esti school 4 years ago and I can still remember the burn of washing your face for 3 hours, because that is how long it takes for the whole class to get the method! |

Thanks for the replies. I do clean my face before i workout. I suppose i just am very prone to blackheads. I could do extractions every day. How do you steam your face without a professional steamer before extractions? I go once a week for exractions, so a clarisonic is in my budget, ive heard it can make your skin more active and start breaking out?
Now I am afraid to go to esti school! |

Have you used a AHA product to clean out your pores? Or a retinol? |

royanola, I used to have blackheads on my nose but not anymore. As I said, proper cleaning of the skin is so important. If you decide to buy a Clarisonic, use the gentliest tip and start slow (meaning setting #1) and don't press so hard on your face. Let it move around the face gently.... Make sure that you use some sort of foaming gel (or cream type of cleanser if you prefer) with the Clarisonic... I would also suggest that you use a toner suited for your skin because it will balance the pH level of the skin and at the same time ensures that there is no further grime left on your skin... After toner, apply your favorite moisturizer..... I go to the sauna regularly and for me this is the best way to open pores if you don't have a steamer or you can boil some water and use the steam to open pores, whichever method is better for you...
Re esthi school, I heard it is a rewarding career choice and you can be your own boss if you prefer, depending what your goals are... Good luck! |

I bought the extractor.. how long should I steam for? Normally when I go into see my esti for just extractions, she cleanses, does a scrub, steams for 15 minutes, and uses her hands to extract. I go in once a week, have been for years. I've not tried using an AHA cleanser or cream, it is something I am looking into. Honestly, the next day after extractions I could go in again lol. I am very curious why I must get extractions so much I am afraid of getting red marks all over my face as well. |

royanola, well, this will depend on you.... If you see some sweat on your face, then the steam already open your pores... I would think 10-15mins (maybe?).. Once pores are open, I suggest use a clarisonic (if you have), put some foaming cleanser (or cream) with warm water.. Drug-store brand of foaming cleanser (or cream) will be ok to start.... Good luck! |

Ok here goes an easy and effective remedy for blackheads:
Take steam for at least good 1-2 minutes (this helps in opening of the pores), take a spoon full of sugar and milk, again 1 spoon and start scrubbing the effected area. Put in as much pressure as required. Personally I put in a little more pressure in nose area since that's my problem area when it comes to blackheads.
Continue doing it at least twice a week, you will see the visible results in a week or two and also it is very important to wash face once one gets back home from outside as the dust and the pollution accumulation in the pores is what causes blackheads. |

My husband has been using the Clarisonic brush and it has made a huge difference. He is also really susceptible to blackheads.
The other thing that proved very helpful was a good cleanser. It can take some experimenting to find a good one. Ironically, he started using the natural cleanser I got for my daughter. If the cleansers are too harsh they will make your skin over produce oil. Bellaboo skincare products have really helped both my daughter and husband!! They are very reasonably priced and of high quality. The other products I added into my daighter's skincare routine that really helped was NCN Acne Solutions Serum and toner and finally Blemish Control by a company called Purple Emu. My daughter (14yrs) no longer has any blackheads and breakouts very seldom.

No one should need to see their eshty for extractions more than once every 4 weeks or so, so you should definitely try doing it yourself if you're spending that much weekly. There are at-home facial steamers you can use with an enzyme exfoliant to loosen oil and dead skin cells (5 min should do it). Extractions are easiest when your skin is moist. In the salon, it's easy for an esthy to keep your skin moist while you are lying down with hot towels, pads, etc., but at home it's a little more difficult. You can seal in the moisture and lubricate follicles by massaging your skin with a little oil right after steaming. That's right, oil. Dry your face first, and use an organic cooking oil (safflower or sunflower are light in molecular weight and won't clog pores). A half teaspoon should do it, and then wipe the excess with a warm cloth. Extract with the direction of hair follicles. I personally hate extraction tools as I feel they damage the skin unnecessarily. Short, clean fingernails wrapped in a double layer of tissues work great and let you feel what you are doing. Be sure to get up under the comedone and push it out from the bottom, just gently wiggle it out. After that, cleanse with a foamy cleanser till all oil is gone. If you want to go crazy, apply a mask afterward for 10 minutes, then remove gently. Tone and moisturize. Be sure to use products suitable for your skin type. |

It is better not use steam machine too often, it is easily to loose face muscle and make nose pores bigger |

Extraction tools are better especially made for this purpose and to avoid damaging the skin.... Using your method will damage the skin if these are embedded blackheads....

I disagree with you angeladayspa... Steaming, when use too often, will not cause you to loose face muscles (or make nose pores bigger).... In fact, it will remove "toxins" when we perspire. The only time we lose muscles is if we don't use that particular muscles and don't exercise....

This is why I say do it gently and wrap your fingers. I find that with an extraction tool, much more pressure is needed, resulting in unsightly red marks and sometimes scabbing where it actually scraped skin off.

Well, it is up to the royanola what she wants to do to remove blackheads. FYI, I've used extraction tools where I was able to extract embedded milia and blackheads which did not damage the skin, no red marks and scabbing..... Maybe this is your way of removing blackheads, not to me anyway, so good luck....

Yes, it is absolutely up to royanola which method she uses. I thought we are all here to share our personal opinions on what works for us. I'm not here to argue; we agree to disagree.

I get, or used to get blackheads on my nose. I saw some Noxema cleansing pads (like Stridex) on sale at Freddie's for $3 and thought, why not. Glad I did, no more clogged pores and blackheads, and they don't dry out my nose. Those or anything with salicylic acid might work for you. |

meganator5, I am not here to argue either. My preference is to use extraction tool as I've used it numerous times with success... Good luck using your fingernails too if this is what you preferred.
