Retinol, IMHO, is too weak to work. It's more effective to use Retin A several times per week.
On alternative days use a serum/moisturizer with high % of actives. For example:

It contains NAG, niacinamide, EGCG, which help with pigmentation issues. |

Skinceauticals has pretty much the best retinol, and it comes in 2 strengths. Unless you count the toddler version they sell here in EU which is 0.3% strong and doesn't do much.
And Julie from Perfect Complexion has her amazing Apeel products, love that stuff, but they are not for nightly use.
Everything else I've had my hands on, which is pretty much everything except for the NCN retinols, is so-so. Either doesn't work because concentration, base or delivery system failed or there are other issues.
My skin likes retinol a lot more, it looks healthier and more alive compared to the weeks when I'm using tretinoin. Plus retinol has breakouts under control way better than Retin-a, at least on my skin. |

I think El has Retinol in some products.
Such as ANR, it is pretty famous. |

There is one by ROC. Its like 18 dollars at Wal-Mart. I started with it before using retin A. It works well; but not as good as retin A. It made my skin a little red and sensitive at first. |

Ageless Total Repair Creme by Image Skincare is time release, so it's less likely to irritate your skin with its powerful actives (glycolic, retinol) |

I don't see anything special in the ingredient listing.
There is retinyl palmitate. I am assuming this a type of retinol? |

Eluage by Avene might be what you are looking for.
NIA24 is also good for repairing sun damage to skin without causing more! |

I like Avene products.
I like the Tricneal with 6% glycolic acid and retinaldye (a type of retinol) for face.
I like Eulage cream topped with a little Eulage gel for eye area. |
