I'm a 26-year-old dude. My father is gaunt, translucent-skinned, and of north german descent. My mother comes from a proud race of rosy-cheeked potato people. With their powers combined, I happened. I would describe my skin, in a word, as ghoulish. Ash-pale, rice-paper thin, cobwebbed with fat blue veins, with rosacea and sagging shadowy double eye-bags in the face.
My skin is so thin and pale it's basically a translucent window into what's going on underneath, and I'm sick of feeling like a walking talking Bodies exhibit. So I'm looking for things to crank up the opacity, so to speak. Tanning is of course undesirable, and my skin goes straight to the 'burning' part of things anyways. I feel it should be doable without needing to darken my skin. I live in Michigan, land of a thousand pasty white people (some of whom I've had the opportunity to, uh... inspect in some detail), and frankly most of them look great. If my skin is 'ashen' then theirs is 'milky', glowing and devoid of bags or blushes or a roadmap's worth of veins. Like a flippin' ivory statue.
All I can figure is their skin is just plain thicker than mine. Since blood vessels lie in the dermal layer (correct me if I'm wrong here), surely I'd have to target the epidermis. I've used C serum and skin rollers to little effect, but admittedly I did not stick with them long-term. Used BHA (salicylic) peels and retin-A to deleterious effect - I felt my epidermis was permanently thinned even further, and in hindsight this is almost to be expected of those substances. And I have my eye presently on niacinamide and copper peptides, but word of the CP 'uglies' has me spooked.
Anything I've missed that I should look at? I just want to get a little opacity in my life is all. Thanks in advance. |

Golly, this is something I have had all my life. At this point I am trying to adjust my attitude and appreciate the translucent and pale quality of my skin. That is hard because most media features tanned skin photo shopped so that no "imperfections" show. I think this would be harder to bear for a male than a female.
I use a derma pen, I use a laser, I massage and pinch the skin in the hope that it will thicken, but although there have been results in terms of texture and an skin tone, I cannot say that my skin has thickened in any noticeable way. I still have very discernible veins in my forehead, but hey, so does Angelina Jolie! Probably not a consolation to a male . . .
At my age (61) I no longer feel that my beauty has to match any standards except my own. That blue roadmap is evidence of a healthy vascular system, for which I am grateful. Instead of tanning I now use a sunbrella and try to keep my skin as pale as possible. Perhaps not fashionable, but trying to appreciate it as an attribute. |

Grouch, I dont have any words of wisdom for you, but have you considered a career in writing? Very descriptive and interesting!
My own skin is thick like a piece of leather from genes and years of tanning in a previous life. I know better now but still suffering the consequences. My genetic makeup just isnt going to allow me to have that porcelain-white poreless skin I want. So we do the best we can.
What would happen if you gained muscle mass? Would that help to obscure the veins in the contours of the muscles? Im thinking of facial exercise and body workouts. |

Sally Hansen spray on body makeup (forget the exact name) is nice for summer. I like it better than the buildable lotion tans which look too orange. But because it washes off I only wear it when I wear skirts or dresses and wear pants otherwise.
I inherited a tendency toward varicose veins and spider veins. I have little body fat so my hands have always looked like an old lady's. Fat injections will cost me about $3500 and are permanent. Restylane and Juvederm type fillers are cheaper but not long lasting. I wear makeup on my face to cover redness.
Edited to add: Just realized you are a man. I think a lot of men like having visible veins. Body builders and men seriously into fitness try to achieve a veiny look and I've been asked by a few of them, "How did you get those great veins?" |
