I have corrected some long standing indented scars with the judicious use of HA filler (that's product like Juvederm etc). The technique I used was to inject around the bottom of the scar tissue and into it as well, but not enough to cause a "bump".

I have also treated shingle scars beneath the skin this way. The outer portion had been cosmetically cleared up with laser, but there was still a depression. I injected directly into the scar tissue which became hard for a week or so, then softened up. I treated it this way maybe three times, but that depression is now gone and doesn't need anything further.

Your best information would most likely acne forums which discuss many different methods in detail.

Thank you very much mismis, your post is very helpful because I had gone to a dermatologist who said she could inject HA filler, I think it was called Restylane. I have always kept the idea in the back of my mind. I didn't know we could get HA injectable fillers ourselves? I think I would be too scared to try this myself, how did you have the guts to do it? Lol Smile It sounds like you know a lot about it. Do you think if I had my dermatologist inject the Restylane a few times over the course of a few months it would permanently help the indents? I always thought the HA fillers were just temporary from what I read about them. How long has it been since the last injection you made to your indented scar?

I actually have some indents that are linear thin lines, it's very odd but I have them and they are all sort of bunch up in one small area on my face and are shallow. Do you have an idea of how and if the dermatologist could inject these with the filler for best results?

I've actually been on many acne forums and read through lots of people's experiences and to be honest, you are sort of the first person I've come across to actually have real success. I also once read someone had good success with TCA peel but it's rather scary to me to try because my skin does not seem to like acids on it and is severely dry and seems fragile.

May I ask what you mean by the outer portion was cleared up with laser? What kind of laser? I'm also curious if you mean red/pink discoloration or something else?

Isn't HA filler used to plump up wrinkles? My silly question is if it's used for wrinkles and can be a permanent fix, then wouldn't it help keep wrinkles away forever because it would permanently plump up the skin?

Not sure if you've seen the Copper Peptide thread, but many (not all) have had good, albeit slow, success with CPs or CPs in conjunction with dermastamping or rolling:

mismis solution sounds much faster, though!

The acne scars were at least 40 years old and belonged to a dear friend. Like you, some of hers had joined together to form lines. I did these first as they were most bothersome to her, and also some "pit" type scars. It worked very well and it was wonderful to see the happiness it gave her to get rid of these old blemishes.
We have only tackled it once, but in time will redo it if necessary. She is now such a believer that she is using HA on the usual ravages of time as well.,

The shingles scars were on my own face. I had a plastic surgeon use CO2 laser on them many years ago and while that took care of the actual visible scar there was still considerable scar tissue below the epidermis and it caused depressions and a thinning of the tissue where the scars had been which was noticeable and not attractive. The scars underneath were palpable and hard. These I filled about 3 times over about a year right into the scar tissue. For about a week I had a hard area about the size of a penny, then it softened up. I no longer have to augment these area, they seem to look and feel "normal" for the last two years.

IMO it is certainly worth giving your doctor the opportunity to try to fix this. If you want to save $ just do a few, and a few treatments each. The doctor should be willing to reserve the remaining product in your syringe for future visits.

There are many people who do their own HA, a whole separate topic. Probably not even legal and certainly not medically approved. Requires much dedication to the study of anatomy and sterile procedure and not for everyone. But can be done.

The acne scars were on a dear friend of mine and were over 35 years old. I asked her which bothered her the most for the first session, and those were like yours, scars that had joined together and formed actual linear indentations. She was so thrilled that now she also uses it for the usual wrinkles of age. It felt so good to see her delight in losing something that had bothered her for so very long. I also did some "pit " type indents and these responded well.

The shingles scars were on my own face. I had had ablative CO2 laser which did take care of the actual white scar marks, but shingles scars form a lot of scar tissue under the surface and these were causing an indentation and thinness of tissue where the no longer visible scar was. This I filled with HA and it only took about 3 fills over a year, and now I do not have any trace of that tissue deficiency. It was around once side of my mouth and quite noticeable before being treated. HA filler is known to have a stimulatory effect on fibroblasts so may help replace collagen.

Let your doc give it a try. Keep in mind it may take a few treatments, but if your scars really bother you it is worth it.

best, mis

For smaller indents yes- but I have one major DENT right at my jawline for the past year and I've managed to minimize it but still, need major improvement.

I will prob see a cosmetic surgeon for that.
-did see a derm and had a ton of cortisone injections in that area and did not help w scarring but helped with nerve pain as my skin was extremely inflamed (and became infected several times...not fun).

But for small dents I did have on my cheeks I have used the Exuviance 25 peel, neostrata 10% vitamin C, Zyderma microsilver cream to help repair skin.

I do get quite a few comments from random people asking how do I get my cheek area smooth (my stepfather and sister just asked me too...lol).

-still have quite a few small dents on my chin area as my skin has been breaking out lately.

I'm tring not to use anything too strong on my skin at the moment, so right now just using zyderma and sunscreen and a eye cream too.

I was just re-reading the Tria thread and found this post from Chocolat that might be of interest:

Chocolat wrote:

Perfect timing. I've been planning to have my derm fill in my acne scars next time there is a sale on Restylane. The ones on one side of my mouth are forming into lines when I smile. Same on my upper lip. I look like I have smoker's lines and have never smoked. I will probably do the vermillion line for those, though.

I've used copper peptides for years but if it made a difference it's very minimal. Still use CPs for general overall skin.
