Hello--
I have just begun to enter the world of DIY [and more consistent, higher quality skin care in general]. I made a batch of vitamin C, E, Ferulic Acid serum and am very happy with it--except I think my skin may not be used to it yet. It stings when applied, and I have what might be irritation in the central fold of my neck, and skin at the corners of my lips [I tried to not apply there, but apparently it moved into it anyway] as well as possibly my chin and sides of nose. The reason I say possibly is right before making the serum I also made a whipped shea butter and aloe vera cream to use to counteract the dry air in my home this winter. I began breaking out differently from my usual patterns [mostly the week before my period began], and have since discontinued use of the cream. But I suspect the red irritation to be from my daily use of the serum.
I read a few places the thing to do is use it every other day or so to let your skin have more time to adjust to this possibly harsh serum it's not used to. My question is what to use on the off days? I'm also just going to not put it on my neck and further away from my lips.
I've been working on healing my irritated bits and acne with various things I have on hand: pure [well, mostly] aloe vera gel, sudocreme, and triple antibiotic ointment.
Would love to hear advice on other things that might be more appropriate.
Thanks for any thoughts/experiences you might have.

Using it every other day is a good strategy long term. It stays in the skin for up to 72 hours so your not really benefiting more by applying it daily. Same goes for Retin-A. Gives your skin a bit of a break and is cheaper of course. Use other things on the off days such as Niacinamide (Cerave PM) or other serums.Use it daily eventually if you wish.
"Once absorbed, this serum cant be washed or rubbed off. It remains effective for a minimum of 72 hours, making it an excellent addition to sunscreen"

I too have had irritation on my neck from my DIY c,e,fa serum. I've been using emu and chamomile German essential oil to calm down the redness. It's been working great. |

thank you--may i ask, when you have irritation, do you just do every other day, or have you stopped using it until you heal? |

I use it until it heals, and when I feel my face is getting overly dry. It's great for acne inflammation as well. |

The problem with DIY is tweaking the pH. It can just be way too irritating for certain skintypes. Red irritation is never a good result and is to be avoided in my opinion. For many people, their skin never will acclimate to a very acidic DIY serum. |
