Hi, I'm a newbie. In two months, I'll be 60 yrs old. I've been able to pass myself off as mid -forties which is empowering.
Genetics has been kind to me. No one in my family has wrinkles, but everyone DOES have loss of firmness and sagging. This is my #1 concern going forward.
I take numerous supplements for my skin and also my hair and nails. I do facial exercises daily combining some of Carole Maggio's and FlexEffect.
I eat really well, exercise, sleep well and get fresh air.
My jawline and chin have lost their youthful contour. My cheeks and undereyes have lost some volume. At times, I feel like my face is sliding off which, I guess, happens at my age.
I wondered if phytoceramides could help firm up my face? There are so many to choose from I don't know where to start. I've done some research and many reviewers say phytoceramides make skin softer and more glowing, but my skin is already soft and glowing. I need firmness.
I use hyaluronic acid serum, Vitamin C Ester serum, Algenist lifting & firming cream and Algenist total eye renewal balm daily with good results.
If there are any creams or serums that would work better at firming I'd like to know about them.
So, what has your experience been with phytoceramides? Positive? Negative? Meh?
It's nice to meet you all and I hope to know everyone better in the future. |

Hi there. It's disappointing to hear that facial exercises don't seem to have worked for you. Have you been doing them for long enough?
I almost bought a phytoceramide supplement until I came across a review that said they had better results from applying ceramides to the skin (using Cerave). That made sense to me. Although I believe supplements work, I always wonder if they're being directed to my skin or landing in a creaky joint somewhere instead. The Cerave has helped my skin look more even toned and vibrant. It's part of a routine that includes LED and microcurrent that has given me some lift and a healthier look.
But since glow isn't an issue for you, these gadgets might work better for your needs: dermarolling for collagen synthesis (if you aren't prone to hyperpigmentation), EMS or microcurrent for lifting, or an ultrasonic/galvanic device like Sqoom, Merbe, or Rex Kara for firming. The US/galvanic works the quickest I think if you want fast results.
There aren't many topicals for lift that I know of. You might consider:
DMAE serums. These were popularized over a decade ago by Dr. Perricone for tightening but fell out of favor when a study came out suggestng that DMAE could cause premature cell death. I think there's been a rehabilitation of DMAE though, and I've been reassured that people like Hannah from SkinActives seem to believe that the study was in error (sorry I've lost the links to that statement). I've taken DMAE as a supplement with no problem.
Canadian Preparation H. Yes strange but this has been reportedly a "secret" weapon of models for decades to shrink eyebags and tighten up skin. It has to be the Canadian version but you can find it on ebay. Although I'm no expert in this, the active ingredients appear to be of the natural, good for you variety rather than some bioengineered product that will boomerang on you down the road.
Hope that helps. Good luck. P.S. I have no affiliation to any products or services discussed. |

The facial exercises I do are working to an extent. I've only been doing a full routine for about 2 months. I've done other specific target exercises for over a year.
I'm familiar with Dr. Perricone and used his products for a while but they smell so bad I couldn't stand it. DMAE has a really unpleasant odor.
Topical ceramides sounds like a possiblity and I'll look into Cerave. I like building beauty from the inside out but what you say makes sense, and I use face creams and serums all the time anyway as well as taking supplements.
A micro current device might also be a good idea for someone my age. I'm thinking of investing in a Nuface Trinity. |
