New Beauty Mag has a good if somewhat brief article on the use of topical DHEA as a skin cream anti age fighter. I was intrigued by the article and have been seeking more information about the subject. I already use Estriol and have added progesterone creams to my war against wrinkles but this DHEA as a topical is new to me. I have been using it as a supplement off and on for a few months (I may be more diligent now) from what I have read it sounds like it would be worth using. The only problem is what strength? I can't seem to pin that down. Is anyone out there using this? if so, can you shed some light on the subject?
I see my Derm Dr. tomorrow (Botox yea!!) I will ask her about it. But sometimes I think most of you are way more enlightened than the medico's! |

I think you are better off taking it internally as a supplement. Your body stops producing DHEA as you age so if you are over 40, it wouldn't hurt to take 25mg a day. I've done so for many years, as well as using other natural hormones. It's cheap insurance in my opinion. |

I do take the supps. My dermatologist only knew of the on going research of the topical application, but not enough of the results. So she was no help. But she did. A wonderful job on my Botox! |

Bumping an old thread but topical DHEA has been shown to increase collagen production:
Modulation of collagen metabolism by the topical application of dehydroepiandrosterone to human skin.
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfate conjugate (DHEA-S) are the most abundantly produced human adrenal steroids to be reduced with age. DHEA may be related to the process of skin aging through the regulation and degradation of extracelluar matrix protein. In this study, we demonstrate that DHEA can increase procollagen synthesis and inhibit collagen degradation by decreasing matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-1 synthesis and increasing tisuue inhibitor of matrix metalloprotease (TIMP-1) production in cultured dermal fibroblasts. DHEA was found to inhibit ultraviolet (UV)-induced MMP-1 production and the UV-induced decrease of procollagen synthesis, probably due to the inhibition of UV-induced AP-1 activity. DHEA (5%) in ethanol:olive oil (1:2) was topically applied to buttock skin of volunteers 12 times over 4 weeks, and was found to significantly increase the expression of procollagen alpha1(I) mRNA and protein in both aged and young skin. On the other hand, topical DHEA significantly decreased the basal expression of MMP-1 mRNA and protein, but increased the expression of TIMP-1 protein in aged skin. We also found that DHEA induced the expressions of transforming growth factor-beta1 and connective tissue growth factor mRNA in cultured fibroblasts and aged skin, which may play a role in the DHEA-induced changes of procollagen and MMP-1 expression. Our results suggest the possibility of using DHEA as an anti-skin aging agent.

I've increased my DHEA dose to 50mg per day. It's good for your whole body to prevent diseases of aging, not just the skin on your face. Life Extension Foundation has lots of articles about DHEA.

Interesting. My Dr has me on DHEA supplements to help with hormone issues, but only 3mg a day. Those of you taking higher doses, do you notice any side effects? |

Depends on your age. I am post menopausal so have no natural hormones. It makes my skin a bit oilier which is a good thing. I'm sure there are other positive effects but to me they just make me feel more normal than before I started taking them at forty, when I started having health problems. I hope your doctor is testing your hormones to see if you are having good results. 3mg seems like nothing to me. |

I'm post menopausal as well. But I am on BHRT which includes testosterone. I've heard that DHEA increases testosterone. So that may be why my Dr has kept it low. I did question her on why such a low dose and she said it was in balance with the other hormones. I'm going to ask her next time if having a lower dose of testosterone cream and higher dose of DHEA would have any benefits. And yes, my hormone levels have been tested. |

I don't take extra testosterone. If all your hormones are balanced and you feel good that is all that matters. |
