Hi,
I really need some insight about Retin-A (Micro .04%) as I’m just beginning my treatment.
For some background information: I never had acne. I went for a chemical peel for minor discoloration and it completely changed my skin texture. My skin is very bumpy and the texture is so bad.
It has now been six months since the peel, and my skin texture is still not restored. I have tried to baby my skin but it is not working. I also tried Differin (.03%) for three months but it just peeled my skin and none of the bumps purged or responded to the treatment.
These bumps all over my face (small and large ones) are just there, don’t change sizes, get inflamed or anything. There are tons and tons of them.
I just began Retin-A Micro. 04% four days ago. So far, all i’ve gotten is minor peeling and stinging. So my question is, has anyone with similar skin texture tried Retin-A? And what were the results?
Any advice will help. Thanks!
I cannot post pictures in this forum because the website doesn’t allow new members to link anything. But if you put the subject of this forum into google, and go to acneDOTorg, I posted the exact message there but with pictures. |

That is a pretty strong formulation; I know, it doesn't sound like much! I would start with .025 every couple of days if you are being gentle with your skin, increasing frequency as your skin adapts to it ie every 4 days, 3 days 2 days, etc, only then moving up to stronger formulations.
Only you can judge how your skin is reacting and everyone is different. |

I thought the .04 was the mildest version. I know .025 is available, but not in micro. And I was thinking micro is less irritating since its time released? |

What chemical peel did you have done and how strong was the percentage? |

I actually don't know the percentage but it was the VI PEEL, the regular kind. I think it's a blend of peels but the website does not specify the percentage. |

I can only speak for myself but Retin-A has done wonders for me in improving discolorations and texture. I wouldn't live without it.
But for the record, it does take a month or 2 to really see the advantages.
I'm not familiar with VI peels but it seems to me that you may have had a allergic reaction to the peel. Six months on you should not be experiencing these problems with bumps and texture.
Have you contacted the practitioner that preformed the procedure and told them what's going on with your skin? You should...most definitely.
Since you said you "went for a peel" I'm assuming that this wasn't self administered.
They should not only have some advice but should be willing to help set you straight. |

Hi Tigerlily,
Thanks for the reply. In means of texture, could you please explain how your texture was prior to going on Retin-A? Also, how long did it take for you to get textural changes?
It’s my third week on Retin-A now and I have not seen any changes yet. But I know it is fairly early so I’m trying to stay positive and hope it gets better in a few months. |

Well, it's hard to explain. I'm not sure I understand your description of your skins texture.
But let me put it this way; I had stopped taking care of my skin at all for nearly 4 years. Taking care of a terminally ill mother and some financial issues had made me totally indifferent and since I worked from home I could get away with a lot of indifference. Given the time of my indifference I'm surprised I didn't look worse..
I had oily skin which had morphed into combination skin since I've gotten older. I had discolorations, shallow scars, humongous looking pores, dry patches and 2 areas of hyper-pigmentation on each cheek.
I know the first month on Retin_A everything kind of looked worse but around the 2nd month my color was more even and my skin began to look smoother and sometimes even radiant. The hyper-pigmentation came to the surface at first but is now significantly fading... and although nothing actually shrinks pores the shedding of skin and encouraging collagen growth does make them appear smaller.
I'll also add that I do Vitamin C serum and a hyaluronic Acid serum with peptides. I have also been doing glycolic and lactic acid peels (high %) and will probably do a TCA peel. I also do micro needling. I have been doing the Retin-A and the Vitamin C serum the longest.... 5 or 6 months now.
I did not have the bumps you describe though. I think you need to figure out exactly what these bumps are. If it is milia or comedones than I think Retin-A would be one solution. |

You know you have to put things into perspective seriously. 3 weeks what are you expecting?
All the long term studies done on Retin A were done for a year plus period. Those were the ones that revealed its abilities to repair and rejuvenate skin. 3 weeks isn't scratching the suffice. I've used Retin A for 30 plus years and wouldn't be without it.
