Hi skin care gang,
I am a guy and I need your help. I am so frustrated about my skin. Its red, dry and even look swollen, and I have skin flakes because my skin is just toooooo dry. My skin will be OK during the summer time, but as soon as the weather starts to get cold my skin will turn red, uneven, and dry and have some flakes. How do I determine about my skin type? It may be senstitive, I guess
I am trying some skin care products, ie the 3 basic steps and it doesn’t help at all.
I am confused about which skin care products to try because they are just so many.
I am thinking about see a dermatologist now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Please help. |

Hello Jack and welcome. Do you mind telling us how old you are? Do you have very fair skin? Does your job require you to work outdoors? Sorry for all these questions but it will help us get more of an idea about your skin type.
One thing I can tell you for sure is that you need to use a good SPF (sun protection) everyday. Sounds like you have sensitive skin. Depending on the answers to the questions above, you will find the members on this forum most helpful. Stick around Jack.
I would not be surprised if your skin is dehydrated. There are many nice moisturizers for men with dry, sensitive skin.

Hi Winnie,
Thanks for your questions and I am sure you were trying to help.
I am 22 years old and I found my skin better while I was a vegetarian. I am running an online business so I don’t work outdoor, but I found out that sweat irritates my skin a lot. You asked me about if I have fair skin, I am not sure how you mean by that. My skin is pretty good EXCEPT for my facial skin. My skin tends to be drier after the shower, and its just for my facial skin
I forgot to mention that my lips will be so dry during the winter time as well.
I live in New Zealand, so its winter time now.
The weather affects my skin a lot!
Thanks for your help Winnie |

Jack - could you tell us what products you are using at the moment? If we know those then, knowing that they are not working for you, we could suggest something else to try - something more moisturising perhaps. |

Mabsy,
I am currently using the skin care products from a company called USANA.
Many people see good results from USANA. However, USANA skin care products are just not for me.
I also wanna try some products from Herbalife too.
Both USANA and herbalife are network marketing companies.
I was talking to a friend about my skin problems, and she mentioned about the permanently damaged skin, which scared me. Could I have got my skin permanently damaged? |

Do you remember which products from USANA you are using? For example, if you are using a cleanser then is it a foaming cleanser or a milky one? Is your mosituriser a lotion or a cream? If you are using a toner then does it leave your skin tight or comfortable? I'd just like to make sure that you are using the right products for your skin type.
Your skin sounds like it's reactive/sensitive or just very dry. I don't think you should worry about any permanent damage to your skin - I would use a sunblock though if you are not. The fact that your skin is ok during summer implies to me that you just need something more moisturising and soothing for the winter. |

jack i have found that chanel's hydramax + moisture boost works good for me in winter.
it makes the skin feel very very good and i use
bobbi browns extra rich balm to wash my face in winter. no more scales.
it is very rich and smells just like orange you take the cream rub it in your face, add wash rinse off. definitely no dry feeling
not to mention bio oil (google for it) as moisturiser if need be
(hydramax puts in liquid moisture to your skin) but sometimes it needs oil too
i don't use toner and its fine...even non alcohol ones don't do very much for my skin |

What was asked by if you have fair skin is, Do you have a light complexion? I personally have very fair skin, and redness shows when my skin is irritated or my skin is very dry and flakey. I use cetaphil cream/lotion to prevent this..but its extremely basic..being a guy you probably dont want anything with a fragrance so you might want to stick to something basic. i don't use a toner or anything...i hear people people say they don't really see the point in using them..but if your skin is dry, stay away from ones with alcohol in them. stay away from anything with alcohol in it...and sunblock is good, especially one with moisture in it. |

Hi Mabsy,
The cleanser that I am currently using is a milky one, and I feel comfortable with the toner and the mosituriser is a lotion. My skin is not too oily so I guess my skin type is very senstitive
Purpleturtle, you said : redness shows when my skin is irritated or my skin is very dry and flakey.
Ya, thats my skin in the winter time
Thanks a lot |

Jack - I would switch to a cream in winter, something more substantial to give your skin more moisture. Either that or add a serum. To keep it simple for you though, I think a cream would be a better option. If you do have sensitive skin then I can highly recommend the Decleor Harmonie range. I have their Decleor Harmonie Essentielle that I keep on hand just in case someone has a rash of a reaction of some sort. My other half has very sensitive skin (it goes red, peels & flakes) and this calms and soothes it straight away. Here's a description of it: http://www.essentialdayspa.com/decleor-harmonie-essentie-p_1202.htm |

Hi Jack!
I am in New Zealand too
Are you in Auckland?? Or a colder city??
I find that even walking outside on a windy day is very painful for my skin.. the wind just blows it numb.
Maybe using a rich day cream with no harsh chemicals will be good to heal your skin..
and try to not use an alcohol toner after washing.
The Living Nature brand in most shopping mall health shops (Health 2000, Hardy's Health) is a very good brand for dry sensitive skin. |

Hi there-
Shea butter comes from a shea nut, which I believe is native to Africa- I have normally seen it in body moisturisers and lip balms for very dry skin. Look into it an give it a try- is inexpensive compared to many products and will definitely help the dryness- is very moisturising. not sure where or what brand you could get for face? cocoa butter also good.
hope this helps a little
good luck |

Hi Maddy, I think you are very right.
Do I have to try the pure shea butter?
Its hard to find the pure shea butter in Auckland New Zealand. |

I have really fair, sensitive skin that gets red very easily. At one point during chemotherapy I could burn from light coming in through a window. The only thing that helped was Ocean Potion, which is an inexpensive and moisturizing (opotion.com) sunscreen.
What's a dermatologist say? |
