OK, I know this might sound stupid, but remember this question is coming from a Yank. I've seen Guapagirl write in posts before "that product is pants" or "that mositurizer is the pants"....something like that. Then I was watching Team Sanchez the other night & they said something was pants. What the heck does that mean? Is pants good or bad?

pants is bad, but only old farts use it now. I believe it is now au courant amongst the younger generation to say something is 'curtains' when it is rubbish. I can't help thinking it is a lewd comment, so I don't say it and stick with pants
I must say, I object to being made to sound so negative on the forum as well! I am quite positive about some things! |

I suspected I was in the 'old farts' age bracket and you have just confirmed it for me. |

I've never used 'wicked' or 'mint'. Well, I have but not as slang.
Pbsadhaka - naff means rubbish, useless, tacky.
Edited to add:
'Naff' can also be used to mean nothing.
e.g 'You've done naff all to help me with the decorating'. |

I too am an old fart, I like saying pants!
I think naff can also be used to mean something which is overused or ubiquitous as well.
Toe, when you have naff in the meaning of nothing, isn't it just being used as euphemism for f***?
I haven't come across mint, but I got really upset when the miniest me called me narly one day. I took it to mean gnarled, like twisted wood? Apparantly it means cool and is a bit of surfer slang [/i] |

Ah, that would make more sense, as in 'Naff off!'
Having just googled I found a site that says 'naff' was used in medieval Scotland for v*gina. |

LOL! I love all these new terms. Our slang in the US is so tired. Nothing new & exciting. It's all so last season! I like "pants" too Guapagirl. I think I'll start using it, if you don't mind! |

Pants is a Southern slang, no-one says it up here
'Mint' - used for when something is in excellent/new condition.
Here are some of our Northern Slang:
Fancy a brew? (a cup of tea)
we usually say it's bollocks if it's no good
mingin or hangin when something is ugly or disgusting (I hate these 2)
I'll have to try and think of some more
Where's Gucci, she could help me |

Hmmm, I thought naff meant meant “dorky” or totally uncool...? I guess I better dig out that Brit-to-English slang dictionary one of my friends from another board sent me.... |

Actually, it's spelled gnarly, or so I learned back when my sister and I went through our "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" / Moon Unit Zappa "Valley Girl" phase. Ohmigod, like, gag me with a spoon! |

I like hearing British words from all of the Hugh Grant movies I've seen - 4 Weddings, Love Actually, About a Boy, Bridget Jones Diary, etc...like..."sod off", "bollucks" and things like that.
Do people like Renee Zelwinger and Gwyneth Paltrow get the dialect right, or do you cringe when you watch them in the movies?
I know when I've seen movies that are based in "Boston" and they try to nail our Boston accent, sometimes I'm like...."nope, that's not how WE say it." It seems to me that every time an actor tries to effect a New England accent, they all sound like a Kennedy.
It's "wickid hadd" to do a Boston accent!

I watched the second Bridget Jones last night and I have to ask Does anyone think that the UK is like this!!!!!! We laughed at the idealistic wedding, oh and when she goes to dinner at her parents.....suburbia.
The only thing they got right was the litter and the grafity If you have ever seen 24 hour party people now that's more realistic |

Hmmmm....I THINK it's actually "gag me with a spoon" which I believe is interpreted as "make me puke". At least that's what we always thought Moon Unit (such a lovely name) was saying.

I don't understand why places don't use actors and actresses from that region to act in films based in that region. Most people don't do good accents. All the british actors I have seen in American films do not talk like any brits I have ever met. They are usually too posh & talk with a plum in their mouth.
Hugh Grant, the girl who played Emily in friends, Joan Collins, even Catherine Zeta has dropped her Welsh accent. They are all way too upper class. Most of us are common as muck and have distinct accents. |

This is a fun thread!! Another slang expression that I think is a bit fun, that I learned from my Aussie roommate is "taking the piss". Now, I am not 100%, but I think it generally used when giving someone a hard time, in a friendly way. For example, everyone is now calling me "the chemist" at work because I made some of my own products, so they are taking the piss. |
