Hi all,
I've been using Tazorac now for 4 months with very good results. I however recently noticed a rapid increase of brown spotting and freckles all over the place. I'm not sure if this is from Tazorac but in desperation (I was so upset) I applied some daytime Porcelana to those areas. I put a lot on but only once or twice and I now am severely irrated. My skin isn't blistering but it is red and hurts. It has been 2 days now and it hasn't improved much. What can I do to help it? I've been applying moisturizer and I'm not using Tazorac until I find out what is going on. I have an appointment with my dermatologist on Friday to discuss these pigment changes and I will explain the irritation but in the meantime my skin burns. The product information says consult a doctor but it doesn't specify what to do in the meantime.
Thanks for any help someone can give. I was thinking maybe aloe would be a good thing to try. I just don't want to continue putting things on it and irritating it more. |

Are you using a broadspectrum sunscreen in conjunction with tazorac? If not then that maybe the cause of increase pigmentation problem.
You maybe sensitive to the hq in porcelena. The irritation will go away with time. Definitely no treatment product until your skin returns to normal. |

Thank you. I do agree the increased pigmentation is probably from using Tazorac and sun. I am wearing Olay Moisturizer for sensitive skin spf 15 during the day when I'm not directly in the sun and the same brand but spf30 when I'm am out in the sun boating, etc. They should both be broad spectrum. I also wear a hat. It must not be enough. The pigmentation increase is noticeable. Since this may be a result of Tazorac and sun will it fade or will I have to try other things such as bleaching to reduce this pigmentation? I have really enjoyed what Tazorac has done for my complexion but don't want to chance more pigmentation problems. I feel in a catch 22. The Tazorac got rid of the acne that causes scarring yet it now has caused brown markings that are unsightly!
Thanks for your help. I've put some vitamin E on my burn and it looking somewhat better.

If you are using a product with hydroquinine, then you MUST use a strong sunscreen as HQ (which is banned in the EU because it is so dangerous)is even more harmful if it is combined with sunlight.
What you are describing sounds like a problem with the HQ. I would stop using it right now and start with a broadspectrum (UVA & UVB ) sunblock of 40 - 60 spf.

Thank you. I only used the HQ twice and rubbed it in pretty hard on my hyperpigmentation area. I also put (forgot to mention) cortizone on it after it became irritated thinking it would help since my doctor said that if I had irritation from Tazorac to use it. Apparently that also made it worse and I've done everything wrong. I don't plan on using HQ ever again and I hope it hasn't scarred me (more brown) with the little bit I used. Now I'm stuck because I have this unsightly pigmentation (I have shadows on my face because of it) that I want to get rid of. I really like Olay Complete moisturizer with SPF because it isn't oily and didn't cause me to break out. I have very sensitive, fair and oily skin. With that said what can I do to get rid of the hyperpigmentation (would this be dermal or epidermal from Tazorac and sun?) and what sunscreen/moisturizer should I use for my face? I'm seeing a new dermatologist on Friday. I'm so upset about all of this. I was going along just fine until this hyperpigmentation problem. I feel like in order to solve one problem another has been caused. Believe it or not I've lost sleep over this because it could have been avoided if I'd only known. I thought I was doing everything right.
Thanks to all for your help.

A sunscreen you may want to check out is La Roche Posay Fluid Extreme 60. It is PPD 28 and one of the most effective on the market in terms of photostablility and broadspectrum UV protection. A few of us use it and it can be a little shiny, so we just dust with cornstarch, or a cornstarch based powder. |

I think the main thing is too use a high sun protection to start with (I would use a zinc based one for babies, it will give a slight pale cast, but it is less likely to irritate than chemical blocks and zinc has a healing effect on the skin).
You only used the HQ stuff 2x and it was in the last couple of days. You may be loosing sleep, but it is early days yet, so try not to panic too much about the HQ (and sorry if I made it worse!).
Give it time to calm down and try applying cold compresses (perhaps with green tea?) or aloe vera gel (sounds like you already have some?) to help with the burning and irritation.
For the future, you may find once your skin has calmed down, that you can use chemical peels or micrdermabraison which could help with the melasma/ brown spots. But whatever, stay away from the HQ, even if your derm recommends it. It isn't banned in the EU or south africa and places for nothing!
Let us know how you get on |

Does this product La Roche Posay Fluid Extreme 60 moisturize? Or how about those with zinc? I've enjoyed the way my skin looks using Olay. I would like to obtain somewhat of that look if I can using a sunscreen/moisturizer without breaking out
Thank you for the support. I'm confident the irritation will go down but am more worried about the browning (which it is now turning as the red goes away) and now not using Tazorac I'm sure to break out again. I love the way Tazorac made my skin look. I was getting compliments without even mentioning I was using it. I'm afraid to ever use it again now even with high sun protection.
I will not use HQ no matter what the dermatologist recommends. The peels, etc. sound interesting. I will need to try that in the future.
And one last thing, I'm taking DGL for stomach inflammation and ulcer problems. I love it and it works great. But I stopped it because I feared it was causing my hyperpigmentation. I went to Pepcid AC and that is causing me other unwanted side effects. I read that DGL actually helps skin. Is this true? I was concerned it increased my estrogen levels or something causing this quick browning.
Thanks to all. Sorry this is so complicated. |

I'd use a zinc baby sunblock whilst you are using the Tazorac. I don't know about LRP, but it seems it gets lots of good reviews here, so maybe when you're not on the tazorac. You can usually get zinc creams from chemists very cheaply or just look for a baby sunblock. They are a bit greasy though, so you may only want to use them for short periods.
I have no idea about the DGL I'm afraid |

...just had a thought, you could PM badbird about a good sunblock, as she knows loads and should be able to point you in the right direction for one to suit your skin |

Where can I buy the right version of La Roche Posay Fluid Extreme 60? I read something about it being different if purchased from Europe? |

LRP FE is only available in Europe. There are a few online places in US that sell them but with much higher prices. You can get FE on ebay from wasabina or directly from Europe.
Olay is really not protective enough and is not photostable. You need to reapply every 2-3 hours when using Olay. |
