Used to dye textiles and paper. and for fluorescent effects, this group of bright yellow to pink to blue-red dyes is distinguished by their xanthene nucleus. When used in cosmetics, they should be avoided, since they can cause phototoxicitv. See colors.

This phenol compound. a petroleum distillate, is used as a disinfectant and to make phenolic resins.
