Earlier this year, my OB-GYN told me at my yearly that it looked like menopause was aways off. A the visit I mentioned my heavy periods and I did have an ultrasound to see if fibroids were causing my heavy periods, which it did confirm, but it also showed that I have a dermoid cyst. The doc wanted me to have surgery to remove it, but I had a bleph job scheduled later that month. After that appointment, I went through with the bleph job and strangely after that, I have not had a trace of a period. Not a spot or a drop. It seems like the eye surgery is what started it all. I'm sure it's not, but you know how we tend to blame things.
I had the procedure in June and it took me three months to heal. I had a bad case of chemosis, and I looked kinda of freakish for a couple of months. Overall, I am very happy with the results, but my eyes are still tender and feel fatigued daily.
Please excuse my long post, but back to the topic--I feel like I have slammed into menopause. Sleepless nights, night sweats, weight gain around the waist, fatigue, and worst of all--the skin on my face looks like a deflated balloon. It really stinks--eyes look pretty decent and the face skin goes to sh$%!
I have not had the dermoid cyst removed--I went home and did a Google search and it doesn't seem to be to serious--just wondering if maybe I've had the cyst my entire life--would have never been found if I hadn't had the ultrasound to check for fibroids. How ironic--th fibroids were causing my heavy periods and then poof my periods are gone. After second thoughts, I am going to have this cyst removed--I am going to the doc next week to talk about that--but I also want to talk about hormones. I only here bad things about them, but this change it horrible. I feel like I went from 52 to 72 in three months time. What is the consensus about hormones here? Again sorry for such a rambling post. |

lhayes - I'm your age and began experiencing severe hot flashes about three years ago. I tried every "natural remedy" possible and nothing worked. I was so miserable I finally talked to my doctor. She explained that Premphase is not as risky as Prempro so the Premphase is what I take. I recall the relief came on after a couple of days. I've been happy with it & have not retained water, weight stable at 105lbs. There is something to be said regarding quality of life... |

I too believe that quality of life is a biggie. Right now I'm miserable. Sleep is a very important tool to keeping our body machine running properly and I am not getting near enough. I believe the benefits outweigh the risks. I am thinking about Bio-identical hormones. |

lhayes1976, I absolutely love your title for this thread. That is exactly what I felt when I turned 52. |

Am only 40, have been on the pill since I was 33 for early pre peri symptoms. Fake hormones at this time are better than nothing. I've started having very light night sweats and hate it. No way am I going through my 50s without being on something. |

I started hormone treatment 6 weeks ago and can't believe what a huge difference it has made in my life. I'm taking the lowest dose of Premarin and feel exactly like I did before menopause. Before the hormone treatment I had to be in a totally cool environment or I would break out in heavy sweating. Nights were the worse, my body was so hot in the middle of winter I couldn't have any heat in my bedroom, slept with only a sheet and the fan on high. I would regularly get up in the middle of the night, take a shower, change the sheets b/c it was so bad.
The odd part is the first six months after my period stopped I had no symptoms at all then all of a sudden I was bloated, hot, sweaty and my hair started to fall out. I felt like I was slammed into menopause, as well.
There are concerns about long term hormone treatment so I'll evaluate the situation in a year but for today, I'm a very happy with the hormone treatment. |
