Product background:
This is not a face product as such, but rather a concentrated active which is used in a small % in face care products. The Bioferment is supposedly the active in La Mer products??

Quote:
Macrocystis pyrifera is a sea macroalgae rich in caragenaan, algin, minerals and many active chemicals. Fermentation makes the cell contents of this algae readily available to your skin, moisturizing it and providing the nutrients required to synthesize new components. This is the key ingredient (the Miracle Broth™) in Crème de la Mer, Fucus vesiculosus is fermented by the same microorganisms that convert milk into yoghurt.

You can buy a jar of this at the skinactives.com website. 2oz for USD15.00 or 8oz for USD45.00. The ingredients are 100% Pure Sea Kelp Bioferment.

The Bioferment is used either in its pure form or as a base for other DIY serums. It can be used anywhere on the skin, even massaged into the scalp to stimulate hair growth.

From reading the feedback on the Skin Actives forum, most people speak very highly of the Bioferment (it is their winning product).. but I would take everything on there with a pinch of salt because it also seems like no one dares to speak negatively about their products?!?! If ever someone complains or goes against the tide, mods and avid supporters jump in quickly to accuse the user of "doing it wrong"...

The results:
My skin is very reactive, which means I can basically see whether or not a product would be effective instantly. I have been having hormonal skin lately, which means bumps and blocked pores, which eventually leads to lots of redness because it is so *stressed*. I also have been suffering dry/dehydrated skin because of the cold weather here.

My skin usually looks rather rested after waking up but still with signs of redness around my problem areas (cheeks). But after cleansing and applying products, my skin does look a little flushed from all the patting and rubbing. Looks even worse if I am in a rush to apply too many products.

I applied a thin layer of this last night, then applied Decleor YY balm on top. Also used around my eyes and in my scalp.

This morning.. WOW!! My skin was not showing any signs of redness and it had a nice healthy glow to it. Now I know this is not the optimist in me skewing the results, because I really have no faith in many products to help with my skin issues anymore. Also, most of the blocked pores which had grown resilient to the YY balm and DH Revitalising mask, had all resided and I had very clear skin. PLUS my skin is also very plump looking, like after a heavy dose application of HA serum.

I also suffer from dark circles and tired looking skin around the eye area. I have not used any eye products continuously for the past 3-4 months. So this morning, my eyes were back to the condition they were when I was actually using a nice eye serum.

So after I did my regular cleansing, I applied the Bioferment and waited a while to see the results. And I DID NOT suffer from any redness caused by touching the skin on my face.

Product aesthetics (and a gripe!)
It is a light brown gel which is a cross between a pure HA serum (but more solid) and the Ice Elements 2 Min exfoliating gel (not as taut).

The smell is very pungent. I was so eager to take a whiff (I had no idea what to expect), but all that hit my nose was a strong chlorine/iodine scent. But there is no lingering after-odour as it dissiapates very quickly upon application.

The Bioferment dries into a film and also has a habit of forming into flakes/peels if you don't apply a liquid or oil on top of it before it dries. SO for those with drier skins, I would definitely mix it with a carrier oil like rosehip into it. For oilies, I would spritz a little water into the product that I have scooped out and then apply it quickly. I wouldn't recommend diluting the product because it has been known to get contaminated and go off.

Katee...that's a freakin steal. That can't be right can it? I'd literally stock up then.

I e-mailed them. Didn't get the answer, yet.

I am soooo excited to receive my SKB. Would you all post what recipes you're using/planning to use with the SKB?

I am planning to make Katee's eye potion, and add this to my shampoo, conditioner, & leave-in.

Ari - the shampoo that you mentioned, you use 50%SKB & 50% aloe, do you add anything else?

I'd also like to use this for body lotion, does anyone have a recipe for that? Or will you just add it to whatever you're currently using? I was concerned about it growing excessive body hair though.

I may also make the face cream, but I'm experiencing a major breakout right now & so will wait until my face calms down.

First, do use the Sea Kelp on your face with aloe vera. It will help calm the breakouts. If you can use Salicylic Acid, crush some aspirin and combine with the SKB for a wash.

For the shampoo, I posted my recipe on SAS way back in June (I think). Someone gave it to Katee and she posted it here. Do a search on shampoo with Katee as author. You'll see a thread called "Katee's shampoo variations". You'll see I put a lot of nutrients in my shampoo 'cause I'm older and my hair and scalp need them. Use the basics of SKB, Aloe, Honey, distilled water and surfactant (for sudsing) to start and add whatever you want to make it your own. I use a gentle surfactant called Cocamidopropyl Betaine. You can get it atwww.theherbarie.com very cheap. Just a few ml. per bottle of shampoo is all you need. When you're mixing it, take a little and wash your hands. That'll tell you whether you need more surfactant or not. After the first time you'll just know how much to put in.

Shelf life: approximately 2 years
Refrigeration: Not needed. It's self-preserving as long as you don't put anything in your base supply (especially dirty fingers LOL). Just keep out of sunlight. Take out only what you need for each cream, lotion, shampoo, whatever you make.
What is it? Fermented brown algae. Fermentation breaks down the cells and makes the nutrients more readily available to the skin. (Think the fermentation of milk into nutritious yogurt.) It contains minerals, amino acids and sugars needed by skin and hair.
What can I do with it? Just about anything you can think of. It can be a base for shampoo, DMAE/HA Serum, facial cleanser, body wash, day cream, night cream, eye cream. Also amazing for mosquito bites, rosacea, breakouts....possibilities are endless. I make my own salicylic face wash with SKB, distilled water, surfactant (which is nice but not necessary) and dissolved aspirin tablets.
Any drawbacks? Only one. If used by itself on the skin, it will form a dry film and flake off (so not a good base for makeup and it can also ball up if too much is used in a product). If you're not a DIYer (yet), mix a little into an existing cream, shampoo, conditioner or lotion that you love. It'll only make that product better.

Is this an okay start? Or, did I miss something?

Ari

p.s. Once again, when you get it, increase the base product by about 20-30% with distilled water since the SKB is very concentrated. It MUST be distilled water. Why? Distilled water has absolutely nothing in it to grow microorganisms keeping your product clean and pure.

zumlya, as long as you keep your main supply of SAS SKB pure and out of direct sun you don't need to refrigerate it. Anything you make with it that doesn't have a preservative added should be made in only very small batches or refrigerated. hth

pandamom & Kristen, The Herbarie and SAS both get the SKB from Active Concepts. I believe Candy also mentioned this earlier in the thread.

Ladies,

Pls forgive my ignorance. May I ask a stupid question - how do u mix you SKB with other ingredients?
I am a new user here and so far I've tried:

1. mixing SKB with Aqueous cream in a small jar with a rod. but the 2 things didnt seem to blend in well...

2. mixing SKB with the hair conditioner i've been using (Nioxin Scalp therapy). i mixed them in a bowl with a spoon. but it began to clog!

so I am confused... what went wrong? was it my way of mixing or the materials i mixed it with? i thought SKB supposed to go well with any cream/ shampoo/ conditioner? no?

a million thanks!

confusing,
daydreamingda

Your question is not at all stupid. Please don't say that--there's no such thing. Okay, then. Many of us have had difficulty ranging up to no success at all mixing the SKB with most conditioners. Some heavier oil-based conditioners just don't have enough emulsifiers in them. You could add an emulsifier like lecithin but, in all honesty, I'd just use the SKB and water or SKB alone as a hair gel after my conditioner. (Just personal preference.)

I took a look at the makeup of your Aqueous Cream and the SKB should mix well with that unless there's an ingredient or 2 they aren't listing. There are two possible things you could try with this. Mix the SKB in a little distilled water and then beat it into the cream with a mixer or warm your cream in the microwave for about 5 seconds, add the SKB and beat with the mixer. If it's still lumpy, warm in the microwave for another 5 seconds. Never warm it more than 5-6 seconds at a time as you don't want it to get too hot and "cook". I really believe just thinning the SKB with a little distilled water should do it, though.

Hope this helps.

There are so many causes for hair loss and so many treatments for each cause that it's impossible to say what will help. But, if it's a matter of lack of nutrition to the scalp, SKB will help tremendously along with stimulating microcirculation through massage or adding something to stimulate the blood flow to the scalp. If DHT is the cause (as in male pattern baldness, which can also afflict women, btw), using minoxidil or adding saw palmetto and soy isoflavones to the the SKB and massaging it in as a topical treatment can help some.
