I really think it is hormonal. I can't think of any other explanation. The hair is definitely hormonal. I found out that I was sensitive to estradiol so, when this waned, it made sense that my hair came in thicker. (It also explains why I could never go on the Pill when younger as my hair literally plummeted when I did.) As for homones, I take bio-ID estriol and progesterone. I have been on this regime for six years.

ETA: Marina, I didn't see your post there...I'm betting estradiol was the reason for your hair loss too. I've had the worst time trying to convince doctors of this. They all seem to think that estradiol makes your hair grow thickly. When I had estradiol added to my estriol just to see if the skin tone improved on my arms and if my migraines would lessen, my hair began to fall in handfulls. It then made perfect sense that it wasn't the progesterone in birth control pills that made my hair fall (as doctors kept saying), but estradiol.

Marina, Estrace is micronized estradiol... a lot of docs will tell you that estriol is too weak to exert an influence and prevent estrogen surges. However, when I had a blood profile done through a top US lab, they couldn't understand how I could be post meno but have so much free (unbound) estradiol travelling around my system. Their "best guess" was that the estriol had plugged all the little receptors, preventing the stronger estrogen (estradiol) from hooking in there. This is why many experts feel that estriol is preventative when it comes to breast cancer, because it blocks the more dangerous estradiol from attaching itself to the estrogen receptors that are involved in BC development.

Hi everyone, I will be back later to make some more comments. At the moment I just want to show you a Q & A I found on a doctor's site on the Internet. I KNEW that estradiol, Estrace/the Pill, and various other estrogenic goodies made my hair fall out. I know so many women on patches and other HRT whose hair is getting thinner and thinner. (This includes the bio-identical blend Tri-Est, which contains estradiol.)

(My bold letters here...)

Question: I have been taking 1 mg of Estrace for the past 3 months. Recently, I have noticed substantial hair loss. Is this a side effect of this drug?

Answer: Estrace (estradiol) is basically an estrogen replacement drug. All estrogens are metabolized through fat and other glandular tissue into testosterone. The testosterone is the hormone responsible for hair loss. However, without the estrace base, the levels will be low. Many women have hair loss in a "male pattern". This represents the loss of hair present on the genes they inherited from their parents. Their male children will usually present with earlier hair loss than average. Rogaine is usually very helpful in these women although it is expensive and necessary on a lifetime basis. However, your hair loss will continue as long as you are on the estrace.

So there you are in black and white. Estradiol converts to testosterone (and testosterone to DHT and HAIR LOSS). Rolling Eyes Grr! All the doctors swear on a stack of bibles that estrogen will make the hair stay put. The only estrogen that will do this is estriol.

Yes, you need a prescription.
