I agree that you should stay away from the micronized TiO2 and ZiO.
I found a good resource for sunscreens. I am planning a trip to Mexico/Cozumel and the federal government down there requires everyone to use a Biodegradable Sunscreen in their waterparks (for snorkeling/scuba diving). The ones mentioned on this website were found to be the best. I plan on picking up some Mexitan while down there, but I will look into the other ones mentioned too. These look like great SS:
Mexitan
Carribean Sol
Soleo Organics
Kiss My Face
UV Natural
The link to that website provides information on the need to use a biodegradable SS. Research has shown that chemical SSs are destroying the world's reefs and that 25% of them are in imminent danger of collapse and another 25% are very damaged. All these biodegradable SS use physical properties (TiO2 and ZiO) . |

Riley, I forgot to add, "strong sun" might not happen over here for another 3 months! We still have snow in the ground I was so envious of a friend from FL who said that they went strawberry picking the other day. We don't normally get to do that here until July-August! |
Oh but if you were here year long you might get pretty sick of the heat and humidity, plus constant sunshine. I know having grown up in the north I really miss seasons and real trees!

Ditto!!! Though it has been pretty darn cold in north FL this year. |

could you please tell me what is the difference between physical ones and chemical?
thank you |
Physical sunscreens refract the UV radiation off your skin. Chemical sunscreens absorb the UV radiation.
Physical (also known as mineral) sunscreens use either Titanium Dioxide (Tio2) or Zinc Oxide (ZnO) or a combination of the two as their actives.
Chemical sunscreens mainly use Avobenzone, octisalate, Oxybenzone, Octyl Methoxycinnamate or a mix of these as their main actives. Newer chemical sunscreens may have Mexoryl or Tinosorb as their main actives. |

I still think chemical sunscreen is better than physical sunscreen. If you do not allergy to them. |
nickiegirl - I think you haven't read all the posts in this thread about what the difference is between a chemical SS and a physical one.
Please educate yourself a little bit on the subject - there are plenty of threads devoted to physical SS here on EDS. |

Liz Earle has just launched a new physical spf 20 today:
"Our new Mineral Sun Cream SPF20 has arrived, just in time for summer. Designed to reflect rather than absorb harmful UVA and UVB rays, we consider mineral sun creams to be the safest for your skin and less likely to cause sensitivity.
Using cutting-edge technology, we’ve created a new and improved formulation that is light, non-whitening and easy to apply, offering great protection for the face and body. Enriched with shea butter to leave skin soft and smooth plus potent natural antioxidants pomegranate, green tea and natural source vitamin E. Perfect for all the family - including those with sensitive skin.
This high performance mineral sun cream conforms to the latest European sun protection guidelines, protecting against both UVA and UVB rays and is classified as a Medium Protection Sun Cream SPF20."
Its Titanium and Zinc. I will try it out and try to find percentages of the actives, to work out the PPD. |
Were you able to try this one, LondonJamie? TIA! |
Hi Havana,
I did try it, but it is not one I could use everday. Its still very thick (like the older version) and leaves a brown tint on the skin. Another dud. |

I am debating between Marie Veronique Moisturizing Face Screen (SPF 20) and Burnout Kids version.
Has anyone used the Marie Veronique? I like that it has so many antioxidants/oils, has a tint so I can hopefully skip foundation. But it is more expensive.
As far as Burnout, I have read mentions of applying mineral makeup over - but has anyone used a liquid foundation or tinted moisturizer over it with success? |
Hey,
I haven't tried Marie Veronique because of the expense. If cost is not a factor, it looks good. When I wear make up, it's actually liquid make up and I have no problem wearing it over burnout. My procedure is to first apply the burnout normally. Then I'll squeeze a dab of concealer a little darker than my skin tone into my palm and mix that with some more burnout, and apply that to my face. |

I use the Marie Veronique Face Screen SPF30 in the Light tint (this one: http://mvorganics.com/_product_83436/Moisturizing_Face_Screen%2c_SPF_30_-_Light_Tint)
I can't say enough good things about it. It doubles as a foundation, dries matte and smells great.
My skin is fair, so the light tint is perfect. The oils add some moisture, but it is not excessive or greasy.
It's pricey, I agree @ $40 for 2 ounces, but I figure I don't have to buy foundation.
I've not tried Burnout, so I can't compare it. |
ShastaGirl , can u compare the Marie Veronique Face Screen SPF30 to any other tinted phisical sunscreen ? Can it cover broken capillaries on face ?
Thank you! |
Hi RussianSunshine-
I've not used other tinted liquid physical sunscreens, but I have used tinted moisturizers that have chemical SPF and powder physical sunscreen, so I can compare it to those.
The coverage of the MVO is slightly more "dense" than a tinted moisturizer, more like a lightweight foundation. It seems to cover my facial skin color imperfections. However, I don't have a lot of trouble with broken caps (only one, right under my eye, that's the size of a pinhead, I do have to use some concealer on that one)
I find that the MVO sticks to my skin better than the tinted moisturizers. And stays where you put it, once it dries. Sometimes the moisturizers just don't seem to totally sink in.
I'd say that the MVO covers similar to typical dusting of physical sunscreen powder (like Bare Essentials). But, I notice the powder accentuates my wrinkles by settling there, which the MVO does not.
Hope that helps. |
