Keliu here! Sorry you haven't had any other answers from anyone else, hopefully, someone else will chime in.
First of all, I'm not convinced that Retin-A causes broken capillaries. I've actually read that Retin-A can help with broken caps - that has certainly been my experience. I used to have a face like a road map. Admittedly, I've had several IPL treatments, but I don't think that RA has made them worse. But that's just me - I'm no expert on this and besides, everyone's skin reacts differently.
I'm not much of a skincare brand junkie, so I tend to stay away from all the big brands and just do my own thing. So, obviously, I can't recommend anything. However, I do recommend using an acid product - maybe Glycolic. Start on this before you progress to doing any acid peels. If you are planning on having a Pearl Laser, the clinician will probably suggest you use an acid product for a couple of months beforehand. So build up your acids slowly. After your skin is used to the GA cream, you could try a simple peel. Maybe, the NCN Pumpkin Peel which is very easy to do. HTH.
What percentage RA were you using? It's always best to start with a low percentage and if your skin has a reaction you can always apply it every other day or every two days. |

I do believe Retin A causes broken caps, as well as stronger acids, like glycolic, making the caps worse - at least that has been my experience. Interestingly the only good thing I can say about 302 is that it diminished my broken caps!
I have been looking in to "natural" products and have come across a few things that supposedly help with the broken caps such as chamomile, rose, and helichrysum. For the acids I personally would stick to a more gentle one like lactic acid for exfoliation. |

Retin-A definitely made my capillaries more visible (I don't believe it causes them, but the thinning of the epidermis makes them more prominent).
Since stopping it a couple of months ago my capillaries are a lot less noticeable. |

Well, I'm going to disagree. I think my skin has thickened up substantially since I've been using Retin-A (approx 3 years). Isn't that what it's supposed to do - increase collagen and elastin? Yes, the skin does peel/flake at first, but after a while the peeling stops as your skin adjusts to the RA. However, if you are exfoliating too aggressively, then your skin will become red, irritated and sore - if that happens then obviously you must cut back on the use of acids.
I also don't think you can thin the skin by exfoliation - the skin continually regenerates itself. It is not finite - it is our body's largest organ. Think of someone who constantly does hard labour - their hands will be calloused, the skin reinforces itself against the constant abrasion. The same goes for someone who walks around in bare feet - their skin doesn't wear away, it becomes thicker.
There's some good info on broken caps here - this site actually recommends RA as a treatment:
http://www.treatment-skincare.com/Questions/Broken-Capillaries/Treatments.html
According to all the doctors that I have ever spoken to, IPL is the only quick fix for broken caps. This is because the laser actually zaps the capillary and disperses the blood. There are topicals that promise such things as strengthening the capillary walls etc, but in my experience, no topical will get rid of broken caps. Even after IPL they can return - especially the stubborn ones around the nose. |

| SCJ, your skin looks very irritated. Just my 2 cents here but I would stop everything and only use an oil until your skin heals. Maybe try Emu or squalane (the olive one, sorry I don't know correct spelling off the top of my head!). My skin was extremely irritated and bright red along with dry patches and everything burned. I alternated emu oil and squalane and my skin calmed down in about 2 days. I would definitely stop everything you are using at present and only introduce 1 thing in at a time. That way you will know what is bugging your skin. Are you using the muslin cloth lightly or are you being rough with it? |

Hi Skincarejunkie
Your skin does look sore.Im wondering whether its a combination of acne, and or rosacea with broken caps also.My poor husband suffers with all these and he got rid of his capillaries round his nose and on his cheeks with six sessions of IPL.It really did work. For his acne he is now on a 6 months course of antibiotics to really stop the reaccuring infection and it really is starting to work.Perhaps you need a stronger treatment and not just focusing on skincare. |

Thanks for your reply! I noticed that you use AHA. Have you had any success with the AHA firming up the skin around the broken caps? |
I've not noticed any firming, but for a 40yo who was a sun-worshipper my skin is in remarkable condition so I really wouldn't expect to see any.

Hi Rileygirl
My husband suffers or should I say suffered with rosacea for quite a while. His GP initially gave him topical antibiotics which he applied daily and it did help, amongst the rosacea there was broken caps and thread veins. He had a course of IPl after stopping the antibiotic because you cant have the two together and now his skin is an even colour all over,he still has acne on his cheek area but thats responding well to low dose long term ant biotics. The advice the doctor also gave to him was avoid washing in too extreme temperatures, and avoid alcohol and no sun worshipping oh and avoid stress but then again they say that about everything.
For him it was a long process but he feels much better about his skin now.He was finding it difficult to perform at work and was avoiding social activities because he was very self conscious of himself.I hope you find an answer cause I know how frustrating it can be. |

Riley - Apple Cider Vinegar balances the pH of the skin and also kills bacteria. I use it everyday and never get breakouts anymore. Interestingly, after I had my Pearl Laser, I was told to bathe my face in a solution of vinegar and water every hour as part of the healing process.
SkinCareJunkie - you could try the vinegar and water too. Has your skin calmed down at all? Definitely don't use any actives whilst your skin is so irritated. Please let us know how you're going. |

Josh is only 40. The sagging shouldn't hit for 8-10 years if he's careful and watches his sun time 8> Protect what ya got boyo.
I suggest starting some facial exercise to keep that face Up Up Up. They are my favorite secret weapon.
Plus, What type of CP's were you using? and why did you use them and how long?
SCJ: Agree with Riley and Keliu - Using some biological healing type oils would be my choice. I do this when my face says "enough" and you know it's just plain good for your skin. |

Keliu and Rileygirl thank you very much for checking on me! It means a lot that I have support! I'm still living lol. I haven't put anything on my skin! Just been letting it calm down. I appreciate you guys telling me to leave it alone because I probably would have tried to put something else on it!
I bought some Hemp oil and some Apple Cider Vinegar yesterday. I'm going to try that. I'm going to give my skin a rest for awhile and decide what my next step is going to be!
XOXO! |
Glad to hear you are alive! I think you are doing the best thing by leaving it alone and using minimal products. I actually suggested that because I thought mine was doing good after a few days of emu oil, so then I tried some of the Skin Image products on my skin and my skin flared up badly. So, I am doing the same thing you are - leaving my skin alone and I have only been using emu oil and Bethany's suggestion of the ELS from skinactives. Unfortunately, neither really makes my skin feeling "hydrated" and almost leaves me with a dry feeling. |
Have you tried Mac Nut Oil? It's supposed to be the closest to the skins sebum so I read. I really like it but it's not hydrating my skin like it used too. That's why I'm going to add the Hemp oil and see if the two together will suffice. |

I have used products where the mac nut oil was an ingredient and it ended up making my wrinkles worse (this could have just been the product!). I ordered a sample kit from Evan Healy (the "blue" kit for sensitive/rosacea, etc). I'll let you know who I like it when I get it.
The products sounded really good to me.

I will look at the purified skin care link. Yes, good luck to both of us!!

Well, I have used face wash and the hydrosol last night and this morning. Then, this morning I applied the oil and the moisturizer. Unfortunately, the smell is so strong in the moisturizer especially that it gave me a headache, and I could only keep it on until noon today when I washed everything off. Also unfortunately, the stuff made my skin very red and now I feel like I made my skin flare-up again with the burning. |

This may be out of left field, but looking at your picture made me wonder if some Neosporin would help the redness and burn go away. Maybe try a gentle cleanser and then put the Neosporin on it over night. Just an idea!

| Ok, just an update on the Evan Healy. This morning I used only the rosehip oil and that was fine on my skin. It had to be the cleanser and moisturizer that were extremely irritating to my skin. I also wanted to mention that I used the De La Terre Vital Repair balm last night and that really soothed my skin. I think I will stick to just those 2 products until this flare is done, and I need to find me a good sunscreen that doesn't burn my skin! |

I can so relate here, Rileygirl it seems you and I got into some trouble using the Wonderbar. That's where I got two horrible spots from back in March. Thankfully one is nearly healed but not the one near my mouth/cheek.
It's taking forever to fix/heal and I have tried so many products that I'm so done buying things since it seems nothing helps (just the opposite in fact). What's even worse is that I leave for Disney in 3 weeks!! So I'm thinking of Photo-shopping all the photos of me when we get back home to hide this stupid scar.
I finally resolved to ordering special makeup & concealer last night from PaintandPowder in hopes to at least cover the spots but in heat and humidity of Florida, may be impossible.
Sorry for ranting, it's just upsetting when things go bad and there seems to be no way of fixing it.
Speaking of skin problems, my 4 year old son is heading to the Pediatrician this morning because he has had bad Eczema or Dermatitis for months. Same thing with him, nothing I use is helping so I give up and will let the doctor prescribe something. I've tried switching shampoos, body wash, etc, as well.
P.S. Supplements, I added in 500mg of Vitamin C daily along with everything else. |

Hey! Thanks for the update! I was wondering how you were doing. I have a lot of freaking health problems going on right now so my skin has been on the back burner... lol
I'm sorry to hear that those products were irritating to your skin! It can be so freaking frustrating because your trying to do something right for your skin the BAM.. it hates it! I'm really sensitive to smells. The sunscreen I used was giving me a headache as well has burning my face!
I ordered the Ocean Tested Burnout sunscreen. I will let you know how it works!
Is this the balm your talking about?

It looks like good stuff! |
I ordered the Burnout Kids version! That is the balm that I have. It really seemed to calm my skin down. My skin feels much better this morning with no more burning, but now I am dry again! It is very frustrating and I am just going to leave my skin alone for a while and see if it will adjust.
I am so sorry to hear of your health problems, SCJ. I hope it is nothing serious. |

Here's the recipe for the shampoo and perfume:
Peppermint Shampoo
1 cup castile soap
¼ cup water
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
3 tsp Aloe Vera (2-5%)
20 drops peppermint essential oil
¼ teaspoon vitamin E oil
Combine all ingredients in a plastic bottle and shake well to mix.
Perfume
15 ml Jojoba Oil
5 ml Sandalwood Oil
3 ml Patchouli Oil
3 drops Mandarin Oil
Use Jojoba as the base because it's got no smell. |

Eh... I think I have been doing the OCM all wrong. I've been putting the oil on then wash it off with water. Now I'm understanding that you rub the oil in and wipe it off with a washcloth correct? Should the washcloth be wet? Oh yeah and do you have to use Castor Oil?
I tried putting plain yogurt on my face. It's really nice feeling because it's so cool. I don't know if it really did anything for my skin. Maybe I should try adding some honey!
BTW Riley.. I still haven't tried the burnout yet! I'm trying to give my skin some more moisture before invoking on the journey! |
Use the oil as you would any wash-off cleanser. Rub the oil on the face and wash it off with a washcloth and PLENTY of hottish water. Make sure all the oil is thoroughly gone - wiping with some ACV toner afterwards will get rid of any residue. Castor oil is good to incorporate because it purges the skin. Try 75% Olive Oil and 25% Castor Oil to start with.
With OCM, you are supposed to massage the oil for about 5 minutes - but because your skin has been upset, I wouldn't do this. Just use it as you would any other cleanser. |

I was put on Thyroid medication in of Nov. of last year. Then in Feb. I decided to make a lifestyle change. I cut out pop, sugar, and lots of carbs. The only thing I think I could add to my diet is more Vegetables. I do eat Cesar Salad a lot though!
I think I may have had my vitamins tested about three months ago. I know they tested my Vitamin D and said it was low. Now that I have been taking Vitamin D I have to go back and get tested. I'll ask them about it!
Another thing that is strange is my face is the only thing that is dry! Not even my neck is dry! You would think if something was off my whole body would be dry?
Another thing I've noticed is you can see the Veins under my eyes. They weren't as noticeable before! I was using the 302 eye cream for awhile. Then I stopped using it.
*Sigh*
I still haven't tried the Burnout yet! Are you still using new products you got?
 |
Ok, gotcha! I was the same way, only my face being dry, and not the rest of my body. I agree that it would be something you are/were using on your face that made you dry and not diet related (but this is just my My opinion!).
I just started my trial last night with the EL ANR concentrate. It is very soothing/cooling upon application and it did not sting at all, which is a good thing! I didn't need a moisturizer on top of it. It really left my skin feeling very soft. This morning when I woke up I still had the very soft skin and did not feel dry, either. I'll let you know what I think after my 21 days. In the morning I am using the Evan Healy facial oil, which I love more and more every day! So, the oil, and then the Dermaquest sunscreen, which, BTW, is not burning my skin any longer! I think just stopping all harsh products and cleansers and using the oil helped my skin a lot in just a few days. I had a 302 Rosacea cleanser, which I have been using at night and then in the morning I am using my sample of the Eve Lom morning cleanser that a sweet lady sent me to try! My skin has calmed way down, dryness is 99% improved with just a few flakes around the bridge of my nose, and the redness is way down. I attribute that to the Evan Healy oil, but it could just be stopping everything I was using before!
(I use the Avene mineral water and have for months now in the morning after I cleanse. I have never noticed any difference with that product. I have a few more days left in my bottle and I will not repurchase. I love the Rose Hydrosol from Nature's Gift.) |

This is my last week for the EL ANR Concentrate. I think this has really helped in repairing my skin. I no longer have any sensitivity. I used Finacea for the first time and had no reactions. My redness looks to only be coming from the broken caps now. And, my skin is soft and smooth with no dryness. Still nothing visible after using this for 2 weeks (meaning it did not diminish wrinkles, age spots, etc), but definitely worth it for me, as it really has improved my skin barrier. I will definitely use it at the 3-4 month intervals like it recommends. This was one of my better purchases! |

Skincarejunkie, I am not sure if you are asking me or Whitewolf!, but, I'll answer for me. I am loving the Evan Healy products. I purchased the full size of the blue lavender cleanser and the "blue" oil. I also purchased her Sea Algae Serum, but have not used that yet. The only things I am not crazy about are her lavender hydrosol and my newly purchased immortelle hydrosol. The only reason I am not thrilled with either of these is that they don't smell good to me. But, they are supposed to be good for the skin, so I will use them up. I only have the small size bottles of those.
I really liked the new Eve Lom cleanser, as it rinses off without having to do the routine of the muslin cloth that her regular cleanser uses. I would definitely purchase that if I wasn't happy with the Evan Healy. |

You will have to report how you like it. I could not stand the products the first several uses, but after about a week or so I started noticing the broken caps really diminishing in redness, and my skin taking on a lovely glow. I am just in love with her products. Just a tip that I am not sure I mentioned here or not, but Evan Healy recommends you spray your face with 3-5 pumps of the hydrosol, press in to your face with your hands. Then apply your oil and then spray with hydrosol again and massage in. It makes a difference to me and seems to allow the oil to sink in much better than not doing it that way. I hope you like her products, but at least you aren't out a ton of money if you find they are not for you! Please keep me posted how they work for you. |
