As following the discussion from Amnis' thread http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=20001 - we didn't mean to hijack it!

For the past few months my scalp has been driving me crazy. Firstly, I thought I had it under control because I used a DIY mixture of ACV and various essential oils which did help incredibly with reducing hair loss. BUT I could never reduce the oil production in my scalp, and like most of us oilies know, it is impossible to go without a thorough shampoo every single day. And on bad days when I didn't bother to shampoo thoroughly the night before, my hair is limp and my scalp is annoyingly itchy around midday - but there's still another 8 hours to go!

I also had a short lived affair with Zenbiotic shampoo + conditioner. I thought perhaps by cleaning my hair to the point where it flies up I could at least have the comfort of a clear scalp for a day or so. But ZB shampoo dried my hair out like crazy and made it look matted and dull. Somehow my skin still loves the shampoo as a face wash option.

So with Manslayer Liz's suggestion, I decided to massage my scalp for around 15-20 minutes a day with, at first PSF's balancing oil - but that does not last long, and my own mixture of -
-- Hazelnut oil (light and balancing)
-- Neem essential oil (balancing)
-- Rosemary (encourages hair growth)
-- Spearmint (or peppermint is a better choice for stimulating circulation)
-- Palmarosa (balancing)

I used copious amounts of oil, because my hair is long so most of it caught on the hair rather than go onto the scalp, then I stood in the nice hot afternoon sun to do the scalp massage (facing away from the sunlight of course).

THEN when I rinsed my hair out with moderately hot water (to loosen oil and dirt buildup) I was surprised that even with so much oil in my hair, my hair was not feeling as slick as it would if I had not used anything in my hair. I only did a light shampoo and didn't bother to remove all the traces of oil.

Then I rinsed my hair out with a 50/50 AVC/water mixture and left it on for a few minutes.

Afterwards, I coated my scalp and roots with a kaolin clay + AVC mud pack and left for around 30 minutes.

The results...
1. My hair feels INCREDIBLY clean and light, normally after a thorough shampoo I would still feel like I have oily roots after my hair has dried
2. After a day my scalp does not feel oily at all, and remember by now it should be limp and itching

I think the remnants of clay in my hair helps to absorb oil throughout the day but it is not visible at all, and the actual massage with an oil along with a pH balancing ACV rinse does help to calm the scalp after two decades of maltreatment.

I am really encouraged by the results, but this is a time consuming routine and it is the last thing I want to do after coming home from work, so I will only do this intensively for a week and then reduce it to 2-3 times a week and in between trying to avoid shampoo on alternate days.

That does sound like quite a routine! Surprised But I'm glad to hear it works for you. Have you ever heard of the Terressentials shampoo? I've never tried it myself. I don't know... I guess I thought of this shampoo b/c their formula contains clay minerals. I wonder if that would help with oiliness?

Amnis - I think I would prefer to keep any clay ingredients seperate from shampoo, since clay is better when left in the hair to dry and absorb oil, if it is in shampoo it would just rinse away too quickly?

Anyhow, my routine at the moment is to massage the scalp with hazelnut and neem oil every other day - I skip the clay treatment and use that only once a week. I still find the hazelnut oil to be extremely helpful for calming sebum production but I don't think I would be able to maintain a comfortable scalp without continuing this massage method.

Hi Minarets, have you tried jojoba oil? I've heard this works for oily hair as well, odd since I use this on my dry hair post-shower....

miranets--You might want to give WEN products a go, they seem to keep my scalp oil free for a much longer time than regular shampoo.

Also Burts Bees Baby Bee Dusting powder really helps control oil in a pinch and it smells wonderful. It contains clay too.

If you want to test out the Wen cleansing conditioner PM me and I will send you a sample from my bottle.

What about the Bumble and bumble hair powder. I use it on the days I dont wash my hair, it really does help a greasy scalp. Just make sure you get the correct color!

I found the spray too messy, too much money for too little product as well. Nice idea in theroy though.
