Hi everyone,
It has been a while since I've visited these boards...caught up in the rat race I guess, but I digress...hey, that rhymes! Anyway, I just don't know where to go with this dilemma I am having right now. I live in the Southwest US so it is in the desert and extremely dry; usually about 10% humidity or below for the most part. My skin seems to get dehydrated pretty easily unless I wear this thick, balm-type moisturizer from Mario Badescu. Nearly everyone says to use hyaluronic acid or other humectants and use toners and immediately put on the moisturizer to "seal in" the moisture, but when I do this it seems to make my skin even drier. I then went on the SkinBio.com website and they say to stay away from humectants completely because they wet the skin and promote aging.
Does anyone else experience this type of thing when they use hyaluronic acid or other humectants?
The other weird thing is that I can use Purpose Gentle Cleansing Wash with no problems, but when I try to use something moisturizing or for sensitive skin... my skin freaks out. I just want to make sure I am not harming my skin all the while trying to help it! |

Hi, alilicious.
You are not the only one experiencing dry skin from hyaluronic acid. I think you will find some answer in this thread:

I don't because I live in a temperate climate. HA is a good water binding ingredient but I think it should be combined with moisturizer too. For you in your dry climate I would think about using a really good spf the higher the better if you spend lots of time outside. Try Elizabeth Grant serums and your sunblock over that The EG serums are so great for dry skin like yours. |

I think because you're in such a dry climate a HA serum is counterproductive. It's really good for humidity... You could try using it at night, in combination with an oil. |

I find HA much more moisturizing taking it internally versus externally. There are threads here on EDS about taking supplements of hyaluronic acid with Biocell Collagen II. Here's the main one (very long):

Emu oil can help push topical HA in. Don't know that it works for all people though. |

Hi everyone,
Thanks for your replies. I think I am going to stay away from HA serums because I think it just pulls whatever water I have out of my skin. I noticed that when I was using it my fine lines were deepened... and who the heck needs that?! I will definitely give the HA supplements a try though...thanks for the links to those threads. It sounds promising.
Warmest regards,
Ali |
