hey guys,
Sorry there's probably already been posts on this but couldn't find any when I searched.
I've been wondering if a titanium dioxide only sunscreen would be enough protection for the winter months (live in uk) so from late oct its just grey, rainy skys. Anyway have been looking at lancome genefique spf 30, its titanium only. It does state that it protects against uva so am wondering if it could be enough, thanks every1 - still trying to get to grips with the whole sunscreen thing ! : )

YMMV. I think it really depends on how prone you are to burning/pigmentation.

My opinion is that TiO2 will not be sufficient, as it protects against UVB and not UVA.

Univul TiO2 (INCI: trimethoxycaprylylsilane and titanium dioxide) which is coated TiO2 will protect against UVB and UVA II but not UVA I. There is a chart in here: http://www.solsunguard.com/zcote_brochure.pdf

Lancome's Genifique SPF 30 contains avobenzone, one of the Mexoryl's, octocrylene and titanium dioxide, not just titanium dioxide. It's also no longer available as Lancome in their wisdom decided to discontinue it for the winter (I was gutted as this was an *amazing* product). I wrote them a letter complaining and they did indicate that it would be back for next summer.

IMO if a sunscreen containing only titanium dioxide is the best you can do (as in your skin cannot handle chemical filters or zinc oxide), then use one. It's better than nothing! But, if you can use chemical filters or you can use zinc oxide, those (either on their own or in combination with) would be preferable. UVA protection, particularly during the British winter months, is MORE important as UVA is constant throughout the year. Whereas UVB is greatly reduced during the winter months and on cloudy days.

circus, titanium dioxide (regular titanium dioxide) does provide some UVA protection, against UVA2. It misses UVA1. See the bottom of this page: http://www.skincancer.org/understanding-uva-and-uvb.html

Josh, yes regular TiO2 does protect a little against UVA, but i do not consider that protection to be a good one. Smile

Here's another chart posted a while back.

Thanks for the replies guys. Oh dear, see told you I was still getting to grips with sunscreen! I thought I read the label and it was titanium only! Anyway never mind esp if they've discontinued it.

No I don't have any reaction to chemical sun screen (been using clinique city block spf40) i was just trying to find a physical as I've seen lots of negatives about chemical ones. Did try invisable zinc which I loved until it broke me out in spots!

Anyway think it is a thumbs down for the titanium only s/s... trying to find the right one is so tricky !
